Upgrading Radio Configurations

2 Dimensioning Considerations in Radio

Configurations

If more radio capacity is required in an existing radio configuration, it often

means to add capacity in areas, such as, baseband, power system, cabling,
transmission, climate, and, where used, internal or external batteries.

Some radio configurations may require an upgrade of both the power system
capacity and the climate capacity.

When existing radio configurations are expanded, the total power consumption
must been known to be able to make a correct dimensioning of the required
cabinet power capacity. For example, upgrading to a radio with more power
consumption may require both re-cabling and fuse replacement. The heat
dissipation within the cabinet must also be considered (RBS dependent) to
match the climate capacity.

The main objective of this section is to describe the procedure how to

determine if a power system capacity and climate capacity upgrade is
required.

The workflow for this procedure and references to detailed instructions are
described in Power System Dimensioning Workflow on page 2.

For further support, also refer to the product descriptions of the hardware
units.

2.1 Power System Dimensioning Workflow

This section describes the procedure to determine if a power system upgrade
is required when expanding an existing radio configuration.

A Refer to Power Consumption Guideline for RBS 6000.
B Refer to Power Configurations.
C Refer to applicable replacement instructions.
D Refer to Upgrading RBS.

To determine if an upgrade is required, perform the following steps:

Steps

1. Calculate the total power consumption for the radio configuration.

For information about the power consumption of each unit, refer to Power
Consumption Guideline for RBS 6000.

2. Compare the calculated total power consumption with the existing power
system capacity.

3. Is the calculated power consumption within the power system capacity?

No Yes
The existing power capacity is not The existing power capacity is
sufficient within the system sufficient or can be expanded within
limitations. A field upgrade is the power system limitations. For
required using a supported upgrade example, add PSUs or PDUs
kit. Continue to Step 4. according to these system
limitations. Leave this procedure,
refer to Power Configurations and
applicable replacement instructions,
for more information about
hardware configurations.

4. Order an appropriate upgrade kit and additional hardware. For more

information about the available upgrade kits and additional hardware for
the specific system, refer to Upgrading RBS.
Upgrade kits exist for the following products:
