BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

Book Title: I Am Enough Author: Grace Bryers

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

2.0 - Students use reading process skills and strategies to build comprehension.

2. Objectives: 
SWBAT - Students will be able to determine the theme of the story by creating a self portrait
listing how they can be nice to themselves and others.

3. Materials/Equipment:
1. Construction paper
2. Crayon
3. Markers
4. Pencil
5. Scissors

4. Teaching:  
A. Reading the book:
1. Start by gathering the students to read aloud area

2. Introduce the book title and show students the cover of the book

3. Ask, “What do you think this book will be about?” (allow time for students to think and
answer) 
4. Begin to read book aloud (pausing after each page so students can observe the illustrations
and

gain better comprehension of what is going on in the story)


5. When the story ends, ask students why they think being kind to ourselves and others is
important. (allow time for students to think and answer and explain why
if needed.)

6. When students are at their desks, pass out a piece of white construction paper and any of
the other supplies that are not at their desks already.

B. Extension activity:
1. Start by introducing the activity. “Now we’re going to be drawing a picture of ourselves and
writing next to it the things we can do to be kind to ourselves and
others.”

2. Direct students to draw a picture of themselves first. When they are finished, ask them to
write down ways they can be nice to themselves and others. (help if
needed)

3. Help students to title the paper "I am enough!"

5. Closure:

  When students complete their activity, have students present to the class what they wrote
down. Students should be able to determine the theme of the story which is that everyone is
enough and that we should always be kind to ourselves and others, no matter our mood.
