    High pressure fuel pump front seal failures were causing fuel dilution of engine oil in some 2005-2007 models. The cause was determined to be a failing front seal on the high pressure fuel pump. Technicians are instructed to check for fuel in the pump bearing case, and to inspect the fuel return line for restrictions before replacing the pump, as excessive pressure from a restricted line could cause the new seal to fail as well.

    ENGINE TECH TIPS


    Subject: HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FRONT SEAL FAILURE

    1. RELEVANT MODELS:
    2005 thru 2007 all models

    2. COMPLAINT:
    Fuel diluting engine oil

    3. CAUSE/CONDITION:
    High Pressure Fuel Pump front seal failure.

    4. CORRECTION:
    Remove a plug from the bearing
    case. If fuel is present the front
    pump seal has failed.

    Before replacing the High


    Pressure Fuel Pump inspect the
    fuel return line from the
    engine to the fuel tank. A restricted
    return line will create excessive
    fuel pressure in the Fuel Pump causing the front seal to fail. We have
    seen fuel lines pinched by body mounting u-bolts. We have seen fuel lines
    lengthened, shortened, added and plugged. Repair as needed before
    installing a new Fuel Pump.
