[Sita reveals her story to Hanuman.]

వ ర త మప ననః.

త షః కృపణః ప ప పసృత చ৷৷5.33.1৷৷

మబ న హ త జః.

రస ఞ య ంమ ర ৷৷5.33.2৷৷

మప నన: whose face was like the colour of a coral, మ ః shining, త జః son of
the Wind-god, సః హ Hanuman, త from that, from the tree, అవ ర having
climbed down, త షః dressed in a sober manner, కృపణః piteous, ప పత having offered salutations,
ఉపసృత went near her, ర on his head, అఞ having folded palms, ఆ య placed, ం
her, Sita, మ ర in sweet, words, అ బ spoke.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god whose face shone like coral, dressed in a sober manner climbed down the
tree, went close to Sita, offered salutations with his palms on his head and spoke in sweet words:
పద ప ష య .

మస లమ ష త మ ৷৷5.33.3৷৷

పద ప O one with eyes like lotus petals, ష య robed in crumpled silk, అ


blameless lady, మస of the tree, branch, ఆలమ by holding, ష you are standing,
who are you?

"O blameless lady with eyes like lotus petals, in crumpled silk, holding a branch, and standing, who are you?
మర తవ ం సవ కజ .

ణ కప ం ప ర దక ৷৷5.33.4৷৷

ణ కప from two petals of white lotus, ప ర trickled, ఉదక ఇవ like water, తవ


your, from your eyes, కజ tears of grief, water, మర for what reason, సవ is
flowing.

"Why are tears of grief flowing from your eyes like water trickling down a pair of petals of white lotuses?
మ ం గగనర ర .

య ం న ం త ం భవ భ ৷৷5.33.5৷৷

భ O auspicious one!, త you, among gods, అ ం or demons,



గగ ర ర of nagas, gandharvas, rakshasas, య of yakshas, న ం or kinneras,
who, భవ you are.

"O noble lady, are you a goddess or a demoness, a naga, a gandharva, a rakshasa, a yaksha or a kinnera?

వ న O beautiful lady!, త you, of the Rudras, మ ం or even Marutas,


వ of Vasus, who, భవ you are, వ O fine woman, వ goddess, to me,
ప you appear

"O beautiful lady! Do you belong to the race of Rudras, or Marutas, or Vasus?. O noble lady, you appear a
goddess to me.
చ నమ ప ల .

ం షసర ৷৷5.33.7৷৷

చ నమ from the Moon, separated, ల from the abode of the gods, ప fallen
down, among the luminaries, best one, షసర who has all best qualities,
Rohini ం you may be

త ం భవ క త మ త చ .

య ద రమ ৷৷5.33.8৷৷

వ షం ప త ం క ణ న .

అ O lady of lovely black eyes, త you, or out of anger, య or else, out


of delusion, భ ర husband, వ ష Vasistha, ప making him angry, క O auspicious
lady, అ న Arundhati, are you not

"O lady of lovely black eyes! who are you? Have you by any chance offended your husband out of anger or
out of delusion? Are you the auspicious Arundhati dislodged for making your lord Vasistha angry?
తః భ మధ ৷৷5.33.9৷৷

అ ద ం కం గతం త మ చ .

మధ O woman of beautiful waist, అ from this, from the world, అ ం క to this


world, గత dead, త your, అ చ worrying about, your, తః son, father,
brother, భ or is it husband, is he?

"O woman of beautiful waist! from which world have you come here? For whom are you worrying? Who is
your son, father, brother or husband? Are you worrying about some one dead?.
ద ద సంస ర ద ৷৷5.33.10৷৷

న ం మహం మ జస ర వ ర .

ద from your weeping, అ breathing heavily, సంస ర ద your touching the


ground, జః royal, సం వ ర having signs of sovereignty, you, O goddess, అహ
I, న మ I do not think.

"From your weeping, your sighing and your touching the earth (gods do not touch the earth) and your signs
of sovereignty, I do not think you are a goddess (meaning otherwise she posessed divine grace).
వ ఞ చ ల చల ৷৷5.33.11৷৷

మ లస జక చ మ .

your, those, వ ఞ signs, ల చ also qualities, ల I see, లస king's,


మ consort, జక చ and a princess, to me, మ it is felt.

"On the basis of your royal signs and other qualities I infer that you are the daughter of a king or his consort.
వ న జన ద దపదహృ య ৷৷5.33.12৷৷

త మ భ దం తన చ పృచ తః.

త you, జన from Janasthana, వ న by Ravana, బ forcibly, అపహృ borne away,


Sita, అ య if you are, త that, పృచ తః enquiring, మమ to me, ఆచ you tell, భ ద
wish you well.

"If you are Sita, who was forcefully borne away by Ravana from Janasthana you may kindly reveal to me
freely. May god bless you.
య తవ న ం పం ప ష ৷৷5.33.13৷৷

తప షస ం మమ వ .

తవ your, న plight, అ ష superhuman, పం చ and your form, తప with austerity,


అ తః endowed, షః your dress, య as much, త you are, వ surely, మమ Rama's
queen.

"Indeed your plight, the superhuman beauty and your robes marked with asceticism, surely tell me that you
are Rama's queen."
తస వచనం మ రనహ ৷৷5.33.14৷৷

ఉ చ క ం హ మనం త .

that Vaidehi, తస his, వచన word, having heard, మ రనహ happy to hear
words of praise of Rama, త on the tree, హ మన Hanuman, క these words, ఉ చ
spoke.

Happy to have heard words of praise of Rama, Vaidehi spoke this to Hanuman, who got up the tree:
పృ ం జ ం ం ఖ స త నః৷৷5.33.15৷৷

దశరథ హం శ న ప నః.

అహ I am, పృ on earth, జ ం among great kings, ఖ స foremost, త నః


of the knower of self, శ న ప నః of the slayer of enemy army, దశరథస Dasaratha's,
daughter-in-law.

"I am daughter-in-law of king Dasaratha, knower of the self, the foremost among kings on earth and a slayer
of enemy army.
జనక హం హస మ త నః৷৷5.33.16৷৷

అహ I am, హస Videha's, మ త నః great soul, జనకస Janaka's, daughter,


మ Sita by name, అహ I am, మతః of the sagacious, మస Rama's, wife.

"I am daughter of the great soul, Janaka, king of Videha, known as Sita. I am the wife of that sagacious
Rama.
స దశ త హం ఘవస శ ৷৷5.33.17৷৷

న ర మసమృ .

అహ I am, త త there, ఘవస Rama's, శ the abode, mortal, pleasures,


experiencing, సర మసమృ all kinds of pleasures provided, దశ twelve, స ః years.

"I enjoyed worldly pleasures in abundance for twelve years at Rama's abode.
తత త ద వ ననన ৷৷5.33.18৷৷

అ చ ం యః పచ క .

తతః then, త ద in the thirteenth, వ in the year, యః with his preceptor, the king,
ఇ ననన delight of the Ikshvakus, న in the kingdom, అ చ to coronate,
పచ క arranged.

"Then in the thirteenth year king Dasaratha along with the royal preceptor arranged to coronate Rama,
delight of the Ikshvaku family, in the kingdom.
త న య ఘవ చ ৷৷5.33.19৷৷

క మభ రం వచనమ బ .

త in that, ఘవస Rama's, అ చ in the coronation, స య while preparations were


being made, మ called Kaikeyi, queen, భ ర to her husband, వచన these words,
అబ spoke.

"While preparations for the coronation were on, queen Kaikeyi said to her husband:
న యం న యం పత హం మమ జన ৷৷5.33.20৷৷

ఏష త యద చ .

న య I shall not drink, పత హ daily, జన food, న య I will not eat, మః Rama,


య if, అ చ is coronated, ఏషః this is, my, తస life's, అనః end.

'I shall not drink or eat food, if Rama is coronated. I shall end my life this moment.
య త కం త క ం నృప సతమ৷৷5.33.21৷৷

త న తథం ర ం వనం గచ ఘవః.

నృప సతమ the foremost among kings, త by you, lovingly, య such, త క


words, ఉక spoken, త the same, తథ false, న ర ం that promise, య if you please, ఘవః
Rama, వన to the forest, గచ go.

'O Dasaratha, the foremost among kings! if the promise lovingly made by you earlier is not going to be false,
Rama should go to the forest'.
స సత వర నమ స ర ৷৷5.33.22৷৷

హ వచనం ః రమ య .

సత ever truthful, సః that king, ః to the queen, వర న boons, అ స ర


remembering, ః of Kaikeyi, ర cruel, అ య unpleasant, వచన word, having
heard, హ fainted.

"Remembering the boons the ever truthful king had granted to Kaikeyi, he fainted after hearing her cruel and
harsh words.
తత స స ధ వ వ తః৷৷5.33.23৷৷

షం యశ నం తం ద జ మ చత.

తతః then, స by truth, ధ by rigteousness, వ వ తః one who held, స రః aged, king, ద


while crying, యశ న glorious one, ష eldest, త son, జ kingdom, అ చత
begged.

"The aged king who held on to truthfulness and righteousness begged his famed eldest son Rama to return
the kingdom.
స ర చనం న త రం య ৷৷5.33.24৷৷

మన ర ద ప గృ త .

illustrious one, సః he, ః father's, వచన word, అ more than coronation, పర


supreme, య dear, మన by his mind, ర first, ఆ ద having accepted, by word,
ప గృ త accepted

"The illustrious Rama who valued his father's word more than sovereignty, bowed to the command of the
father.
ద న ప గృ న ద య ৷৷5.33.25৷৷

అ త మస త ప కమః.

సత ప కమః one whose truthfulness was his strength, మః Rama, ద he give,న ప గృ


he will not take, త even for his life, even a little, అ య harsh, న he
will not speak .

"Rama, whose strength was his truthfulness, gave whatever others sought but would not accept anything in
return. He would not speak a harsh word.
స త మ మ య ః৷৷5.33.26৷৷

సృజ మన జ ం జన ంస శ .

మ య ః a highly renowned, సః he, మ luxurious, ఉత upper garments, య cast


off, మన whole heartedly, జ kingdom, సృజ having given up, me, జన to his mother,

స శ entrusted.

"Having given up the kingdom voluntarily, Rama, a highly renowned king cast off his luxurious upper
garments and asked me to take care of his mother.
హం త గత రం ప వన ৷৷5.33.27৷৷

న న సస చ .

అహ I myself, వన a forest-dweller, ర quickly, తస his, అ గతః ahead of him, ప


started, న by him, ః separated, me, స న చ did not prefer even heaven.

"I, however resolved to live in the forest, marched ahead of him quickly as I did not prefer even heaven
without him.
వ మ గ తనననః৷৷5.33.28৷৷

ర జ మ రలఙ ృతః.

మ గః a noble one, తనననః a delight to friends, ః Saumitri, వ already, ర జస


eldest brother's, అ to follow him, మ ః an bark, అలఙ ృతః dressed.

వయం భ శం బ న దృఢ వ ః৷৷5.33.29৷৷

ప స దృషం వనం గ రదర న .

then వయ we, భ ః king's, ఆ శ order, బ న respecting, దృఢ వ ః resolved firmly,


in the past, అదృష not seen, గ రదర న impenetrable, వన forest, ప ః స ః we
entered.

"Respecting the king's order and determined firmly, we entered the impenetrable forest.
వస దణ ర త హమ జసః৷৷5.33.30৷৷

ర పహృ వ న త .

దణ ర in the Dandaka forest, వసతః while living, అ జసః the most valiant, తస his,
wife, అహ am, త by evil-minded, వ న by Ravana, అపహృ was abducted.

"While the most valiant Rama was living in the Dandaka forest, I, his wife was borne away by the evil-
minded Ravana.
న గహః కృతః৷৷5.33.31৷৷

ఊర ం ం ం తతస త .

న by him, two, months, to me, గహః grant of time to live, కృతః given, తతః
then, after the two, months, ఊర after that, త life, త I will give
up.

"He has allowed me two months time to live. After two months I will have to give up my life."
ఇ మ య యఆ నర తయ ంశస రః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage

Hearing the words of Sita who was overwhelmed with grief, the monkey leader Hanuman felt sad and thus
spoke comforting her:
అహం మస స తస గతః.

శ మ ంచ శలమ బ ৷৷5.34.2৷৷

O queen, Vaidehi, అహ I am, మస Rama's, స by order, తవ your, తః


messenger, ఆగతః reached, శ is well, మః Rama, ం చ and you, శల welfare, అ బ
wished you.

"By the command of Rama I am here as a messenger. He is keeping well. He is well and wishes you well.
బహ మ సం ంశ ద ద ంవరః.

స ం శర శలమ బ ৷৷5.34.3৷৷

O god-like lady, ద mastered the Vedas, వరః choicest, యః he is, బహ అ స weapon


of Brahma (Brahmastra), ంశ and Vedas, ద knows, సః he, శర ః son of Dasaratha, మః Rama,
you, శల welfare, అ బ conveyed.

"O god-like lady! Rama, son of Dasaratha, master of the Vedas, wielder of Brahmastra wishes you well.
ల ణశ మ భ చరః యః.

కృత కసనప ర దన ৷৷5.34.4৷৷

మ ః very mighty, భ ః your husband, యః dear, అ చరః follower, ల ణశ Lakshmana


also, కసనపః immersed in grief, ర with his head in obeisance, to you, అ దన offers
salutations, కృత has done.

"The mighty Lakshmana too, a dear brother and follower of your husband is immersed in grief, and sends
salutations to you."
త ః శలం శమ నర ంహ ః.

సంహృషస హ మనమ బ ৷৷5.34.5৷৷

that queen, త ః of both of them, నర ంహ ః of lions among men, శల well-being,


శమ on hearing, సంహృషస overtaken by joy experienced in all her limbs, అథ then,

హ మన Hanuman, అ బ spoke.

On hearing the well-being of Rama and Lakshman, lions among men, Sita experienced thrill all over her
body. She then spoke to Hanuman:
క బత యం ప .

ఏ వన న నరం వరశ ద ৷৷5.34.6৷৷

వన who lives, నర human being, వరశ ద a hundred years, ఆననః happiness, ఏ comes,
ఇయ this, popular, adage, క is auspicious, to me, ప appears.

"The adage that 'joy comes to a living being even though it be at the end of a hundred years' is popular. It
appears true in my case".
త స గ త .

పరస ణ పం శ పచ క ః৷৷5.34.7৷৷

స గ when the meeting took place, త in him, త like that, అ wonderful, ః pleasure,
ఉ was created, in both, శ confiding in the other, పరస ణ each to the other, ఆ పం
చ converse, చ క ః started.

Hanuman thus created a sense of wonderful joy in her as they came together. Both of them started to
converse restoring confidence in each other.
త సద చనం హ న థపః.

క స ప పచ క ৷৷5.34.8৷৷

హ థపః leader of the monkey troops, హ Hanuman, క ః of the piteous lady stricken
with grief, త ః her, ః Sita's, త that, వచన word, after hearing, స ప close by,
ఉపచ క moved.

Hearing the reply of Sita, who was crying piteously, stricken with grief, the monkey leader, Hanuman moved
close to her.
య య స పం స హ పసర .

త త వణం తం ప శఙ ৷৷5.34.9৷৷

సః హ Hanuman, య య slowly that way, స ప near, ఉపసర started moving, త


త in the same way, that Sita, త him, వణ Ravana, ప శఙ suspected.

As Hanuman started slowly drawing close, Sita suspected he might be Ravana.


అ ష ృత దం క తం యదస .

నర గమ స ఏ యం వణః৷৷5.34.10৷৷

అ Oh!, fie upon, to myself, ఇద this, అస to him, క త story, ష ృత that which


should not have been said, అయ he, న ర in cognito, ఉ గమ has come, సః వణః verily
he is Ravana.

"Oh!shame on me. I have told him my story which should not have been said. This is verily Ravana come in
a disguise".
మ కస ం కక .

త నవ ధర ంస శ ৷৷5.34.11৷৷

అనవ who has flawless limbs, she, అ కస Ashoka tree's, that, branch,
later leaving, కక emaciated out of sorrow, త on that, ధర వ on the ground,
స శ sat near.

So saying Sita of flawless limbs, emaciated with grief, left the branch of Ashoka tree held by her and
squatted on the ground.
హ న ః ం ం దృ భయ .

అవనత మ సత ం జన త ৷৷5.34.12৷৷

నం భయ త త.

మ ః long-armed one, హ న Hanuman too, ః sorrowful lady, భయ


deluded with fear, her, దృ on seeing, తతః then, ం జన త the daughter of Janaka,
అవనత prostrated, చ and she, భయ త trembling with fear, ఏన him, యః again,
త did not look at him.

The long-armed Hanuman saw Sita, who was stricken with grief and deluded with fear. He prostrated to her.
But out of fear she did not look at him.
తం దృ వన నం శ న ৷৷5.34.13৷৷

అబ ర చ వస నరం మ రస .

శ న moon-faced lady, Sita, త him, వన న prostrating, దృ on seeing, ర


deep, ఉచ వస after breathing out, మ రస in a sweet voice, నర to vanara, అ బ said.

On seeing the vanara prostrated, the moon-faced lady, sighed deeply and spoke to him in a sweet voice:
ం ప య త ం వణస య ৷৷5.34.14৷৷

ఉ దయ యస పం తన భన .

త you, disguised, ప షః entered, trickster, స య yourself, వణః య if


you are Ravana, to me, యః again, స ప grief, ఉ దయ you have created, త that,
భన న not good.

"If you are that trickster Ravana who appears incognito before me, it is not good for you. You are causing
grief again.
స ంప త జ పం యః ప జక ప .

జన మ దృషస ం స ఏ వణః৷৷5.34.15৷৷

యః వణః that Ravana, స ం ప his own form, ప త జ after giving up, ప జక ప

taking the form of a mendicant, జన in Janasthana, మ by me, దృషః seen, త ం you, స ఏవ అ


you are the same one.

"You are the same Ravana who took the guise of a mendicant, giving up your real form and came to
Janasthana.
ఉప సకృ ం ం మ ప చర.

స పయ ం యస న ం తన భన ৷৷5.34.16৷৷

మ ప one who can assume any form, చర night-stalker, ఉప సకృ ం an emaciated lady,
సన ం a lady stricken with grief, ం pitiable, me, యః again, స పం grief, స పయ
you are making me sorrowful, త that, భనం న not good for you.

"Oh! you are one who can assume any form at will. You are a night-stalker. It is not good for you to cause
pain to me who is already emaciated through fasting, who is pitiable and who is already afflicted.
అథ త వం యన ప శ త ৷৷5.34.17৷৷

మన మమ త తవ దర .

అథ or may be, మ by me, య that which, ప శ త that I am suspecting, ఏత because,


ఏవ all this, న not true, తవ your, దర by your presence, మమ my, మనసః mind, ః
pleased, ఉత is generated.

"May be my suspicion is not correct! Because I am experiencing pleasure in my mind in your presence.
య మస తస గ భ దమ ৷৷5.34.18৷৷

పృ ంహ ష మక .

త you, మస Rama's, తః messenger, ఆగతః య if you have come here, to you, భ ద be


auspicious, అ be, హ ష O great vanara, to me, మక Rama'story, dear, you,
పృ I ask you.

"O great vanara, If on the other hand you have come here as Rama's messenger I wish you well. I love
Rama's story. Tell me.
మస కథయ యస మమ నర৷৷5.34.19৷৷

తం హర మ న లం య రయః.

నర vanara, మమ my, యస dear lord's, మస Rama's, virtues, కథయ you may tell me,
మ O gentle one, న ల river bank, రయః య like the current of water, my, త mind,
హర you are luring.

"O vanara! Rama's virtues are dear to me to hear. O gentle one! just as the current of the river wears away its
banks, my mind is lured by your presence.
అ స ప స ఖ హ వం హృ ৷৷5.34.20৷৷

తం మప ఘ ణవ కస .

స ప స of a dream, ఖ pleasure, అ Oh!, హృ kept dreaming for a long time, that,

ఘ ణ by Rama, తం మ person sent, వ కస vanara, ఏవ that way, ప I am seeing.

"Oh! I have been seeing the person sent by Rama in my dream for a long time. This is a pleasant dream to
me.
స యద హం రం ఘవం సహల ణ ৷৷5.34.21৷৷

ప యం వ యం స మమ మత .

అహ I, స even in a dream, సహల ణ along with Lakshmana, ర heroic, ఘవ


Rama, ప యం య if I can see, వ య I will not be despondent, మమ my, స even the
dream, మత inimical to me.

"Even if I can see the heroic Rama together with Lakshmana in my dream my pain will be gone. Even the
dream is inimical to me (I cannot sleep and thus cannot dream.)
హం స ప మం మ స దృ నర ৷৷5.34.22৷৷

నశ దయః ం ప ద మమ.

అహ I am, ఇమ this, స ప dream, న మ I do not think so, స in a dream, నర


vanara, దృ having seen, అ దయః welfare, to attain, న శక ః not possible, మమ to
me, అ దయః pleasure, పశ is experienced.

"I do not think it is a dream. Pleasure cannot be experienced by seeing a vanara in a dream. I experience
pleasure now (seeing a monkey in a dream is a bad omen).
త యం భ తగ య ৷৷5.34.23৷৷

ఉ ద యం మృగతృ .

అయ this, త హః delusion in the mind, ం why do I feel like this? ఇయ this kind of,
తగ ః mental inbalance, భ may be, ఉ దజః developed due to madness, or else is it a
change?, ఇయ this, మృగతృ a mirage, may be.

"Can this be a delusion of my mind or a mental imbalance (resulting in movement of the mind in the body).
Is it a malady born of my madness? Or is it a mirage?
అథ య దల ణః৷৷5.34.24৷৷

స హ న యం వ కస .

అథ if not, అయ this, ఉ దః insanity, ఉ దల ణః sign of insanity, delusion also,


న not, అహ I, ఆ న myself, ఇమ this, వ కస vanara, స recognise.

"No, this cannot be insanity. nor even delusion. But I recognise this vanara well"!
ఇ వం బ సమ ర బ బల ৷৷5.34.25৷৷

ర ం మ ప తం ప .

Sita, ఇ వ in this manner, బ బల strength and weakness, బ in many ways,


సమ ర after considering, ర of demons, మ ప taking any form at will, త him,

Considering the strength and weakness of demons in that manner Sita thought that Hanuman was none other
than the king of demons who can asume any form at will.
ఏ ం ం త కృ త మధ ৷৷5.34.26৷৷

న ప జ థ నరం జన త .

త then, త మధ lady with a fair waist, జన త Janaka's daughter, that Sita, ఏ


in this way, thought, కృ having entertained, అథ then, నర to vanara, న ప జ ర
did not respond.

Having entertained such thoughts, Sita, the lady with a fairwaist, daughter of Janaka, did not respond to the
vanara.
తం హ త జః৷৷5.34.27৷৷

ర చ స ం సం పహరయ .

త జః son of the Wind-god, హ Hanuman, ః Sita's, త thought,


understood, త then, her, ః pleasing to hear, వచ ః by the words, స మ హరయ
pleased.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god understood what was going on in Sita's mind and spoke pleasing words that
brought joy in her.
ఆ త ఇవ జ క నశ య ৷৷5.34.28৷৷

సర స కస శవ య .

క పపన శ య ర య ః৷৷5.34.29৷৷

ఆ త ఇవ like the Sun, జ glorious, శ య like the Moon, క నః brings delight to the whole
world, వః god, శవ య like Vaisravana, సర స of all, కస of the worlds, king,
మ య ః is renowned, ః య like Visnu, క ణ in valour, ఉపపన శ endowed .

"Rama is glorious as the Sun, brings delight to the whole world like the Moon, is the
king of kings like Vaisravana, and renowned like Visnu endowed with valour.
సత మ ర చస ర .

ప భగ కనర ఇవ ৷৷5.34.30৷৷

సత truthful in speech, వః god, చస ర like Brihaspati, మ ర sweet tongued,


ప handsome, భగః graceful, prosperous, a personification, కనర ః ఇవ like
Kamadeva.

"He is truthful in speech like Brihaspati, prosperous (like Kubera), sweet-tongued, handsome, graceful like
Kamadeva.
న ధః పహ చ మ రథః.

మవష యస మ త నః৷৷5.34.31৷৷

న ధః who shows anger to the proper person, పహ చ who punishes, the world, షః supreme,
మ రథః great charioteer, కః in the world, యస whose, మ త నః of the great self,
మవష under the shadow of whose shoulders refuge is taken.

"He shows anger to one who deserves it, he is the foremost charioteer of the world and he is a great self
under the shadow of whose shoulders the whole world takes refuge.
అపకృ శమప న ృగ ణ ఘవ .

ప తస ద యత ల ৷৷5.34.32৷৷

న since, ఘవ Rama, మృగ ణ in the form of a deer, ఆ శమప from the hermitage,
అపకృష were abducted, isolated place, అప you are borne away, అ you, తస its,
యత ల result, ద you will see.

"You will see the consequences of the action of Ravana who abducted you deceitfully in the form of deer
when Rama was away from the hermitage.
న వణం సం వ ష ర .

షప ౖ ర ల వ వ ః৷৷5.34.33৷৷

హం తస త శ గతః.

త న ః రస ం శలమ బ ৷৷5.34.34৷৷

ర heroic, యః who, న soon, ష ప :ౖ released in great anger, జ ల ః by burning,


వ ః ఇవ like fire, ఇ with arrows, సం in war, వణ Ravana, వ ష would slay, న
therefore, తః envoy, తః sent, ఇహ here, త త శ your presence, ఆగతః I have come,
త న due to separation from you, ః రః filled with sorrow, సః he, to you, శల
welfare, అ బ asking.

"Heroic Rama will soon release many scorching, fiery arrows in anger and kill Ravana. I seek your
permission as an envoy of Rama. Filled with grief by your separation, he has made inquiries about your
welfare.
ల ణశ మ ననవరనః.

అ ద మ స ం శలమ బ ৷৷5.34.35৷৷

మ ః brilliant, ననస వరనః delight of Sumitra, మ ః long-armed one, సః


ల ణశ Lakshmna, to you, అ ద offering salutations, శల welfare, అ బ enquired.

"The brilliant, long-armed Lakshmana, delight of Sumitra enquires about your welfare and offers salutations
to you.

"O goddess like lady! Rama's friend Sugriva, king of vanara chieftans inquires about your well-being.

వ వశ గ ৷৷5.34.37৷৷

స వః together with Sugriva, సల ణః and Lakshmna, మః Rama, you, త always,


స ర remembers, Vaidehi, వశ under the clutches of she-demons, ఆగ come,
luckily, వ you are alive.

"O Vaidehi! Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva always remember you. Luckily you are alive even though you
are under the clutches of she-demons.
న ద మం ల ణం చ మ బల .

మ నర ం వం జస ৷৷5.34.38৷৷

మ Rama, మ బల mighty, ల ణం Lakshmana, నర among crores of vanaras,


మ in the midst, అ జస of a hero of unlimited prowess, వం చ also Sugriva, న very
soon, ద you will see.

"Very soon you will see mighty Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva of unlimited prowess surrounded by crores
of vanaras.
అహం వస హ మ నరః.

ప నగ ం ల ం లఙ మ ద ৷৷5.34.39৷৷

అహ I am, వస వః minister of Sugriva, హ మ called Hanuman, నరః a vanara,


మ ద great ocean, లఙ having leaped, ల ం నగ city of Lanka, ప షః I have
entered.

"I am Sugriva's minister known as Hanuman, a vanara who entered the city of Lanka after leaping over the
great ocean.
కృ పద సం వణస త నః.

ం ద ప హం స త ప కమ ৷৷5.34.40৷৷

త నః cruel-minded, వణస Ravana's, : on the head, పద స placing my foot, కృ


of having done, ప కమ valour, స త using, అహ I, you, ద to see, ఉప తః
came here.

"Setting my foot with my valour on the head of the cruel-minded Ravana, using my valour, I came here to
see you.
హమ త య మవగచ .

"O great vanara, If on the other hand you have come here as Rama's messenger I wish you well. I love
Rama's story. Tell me.
మస కథయ యస మమ నర৷৷5.34.19৷৷

తం హర మ న లం య రయః.

నర vanara, మమ my, యస dear lord's, మస Rama's, virtues, కథయ you may tell me,
మ O gentle one, న ల river bank, రయః య like the current of water, my, త mind,
హర you are luring.

"O vanara! Rama's virtues are dear to me to hear. O gentle one! just as the current of the river wears away its
banks, my mind is lured by your presence.
అ స ప స ఖ హ వం హృ ৷৷5.34.20৷৷

తం మప ఘ ణవ కస .

స ప స of a dream, ఖ pleasure, అ Oh!, హృ kept dreaming for a long time, that,


ఘ ణ by Rama, తం మ person sent, వ కస vanara, ఏవ that way, ప I am seeing.

"Oh! I have been seeing the person sent by Rama in my dream for a long time. This is a pleasant dream to
me.
స యద హం రం ఘవం సహల ణ ৷৷5.34.21৷৷

ప యం వ యం స మమ మత .

అహ I, స even in a dream, సహల ణ along with Lakshmana, ర heroic, ఘవ


Rama, ప యం య if I can see, వ య I will not be despondent, మమ my, స even the
dream, మత inimical to me.

"Even if I can see the heroic Rama together with Lakshmana in my dream my pain will be gone. Even the
dream is inimical to me (I cannot sleep and thus cannot dream.)
హం స ప మం మ స దృ నర ৷৷5.34.22৷৷

నశ దయః ం ప ద మమ.

అహ I am, ఇమ this, స ప dream, న మ I do not think so, స in a dream, నర


vanara, దృ having seen, అ దయః welfare, to attain, న శక ః not possible, మమ to
me, అ దయః pleasure, పశ is experienced.

"I do not think it is a dream. Pleasure cannot be experienced by seeing a vanara in a dream. I experience
pleasure now (seeing a monkey in a dream is a bad omen).
త యం భ తగ య ৷৷5.34.23৷৷

ఉ ద యం మృగతృ .

అయ this, త హః delusion in the mind, ం why do I feel like this? ఇయ this kind of,
తగ ః mental inbalance, భ may be, ఉ దజః developed due to madness, or else is it a
change?, ఇయ this, మృగతృ a mirage, may be.

"Can this be a delusion of my mind or a mental imbalance (resulting in movement of the mind in the body).
Is it a malady born of my madness? Or is it a mirage?
అథ య దల ణః৷৷5.34.24৷৷

స హ న యం వ కస .

అథ if not, అయ this, ఉ దః insanity, ఉ దల ణః sign of insanity, delusion also,


న not, అహ I, ఆ న myself, ఇమ this, వ కస vanara, స recognise.

"No, this cannot be insanity. nor even delusion. But I recognise this vanara well"!
ఇ వం బ సమ ర బ బల ৷৷5.34.25৷৷

ర ం మ ప తం ప .

Sita, ఇ వ in this manner, బ బల strength and weakness, బ in many ways,


సమ ర after considering, ర of demons, మ ప taking any form at will, త him,
ప king of demons, he thought.

Considering the strength and weakness of demons in that manner Sita thought that Hanuman was none other
than the king of demons who can asume any form at will.
ఏ ం ం త కృ త మధ ৷৷5.34.26৷৷

న ప జ థ నరం జన త .

త then, త మధ lady with a fair waist, జన త Janaka's daughter, that Sita, ఏ


in this way, thought, కృ having entertained, అథ then, నర to vanara, న ప జ ర
did not respond.

Having entertained such thoughts, Sita, the lady with a fairwaist, daughter of Janaka, did not respond to the
vanara.
తం హ త జః৷৷5.34.27৷৷

ర చ స ం సం పహరయ .

త జః son of the Wind-god, హ Hanuman, ః Sita's, త thought,


understood, త then, her, ః pleasing to hear, వచ ః by the words, స మ హరయ
pleased.

Hanuman, son of the Wind-god understood what was going on in Sita's mind and spoke pleasing words that
brought joy in her.
ఆ త ఇవ జ క నశ య ৷৷5.34.28৷৷

సర స కస శవ య .

క పపన శ య ర య ః৷৷5.34.29৷৷

ఆ త ఇవ like the Sun, జ glorious, శ య like the Moon, క నః brings delight to the whole
world, వః god, శవ య like Vaisravana, సర స of all, కస of the worlds, king,
మ య ః is renowned, ః య like Visnu, క ణ in valour, ఉపపన శ endowed .

"Rama is glorious as the Sun, brings delight to the whole world like the Moon, is the
king of kings like Vaisravana, and renowned like Visnu endowed with valour.
సత మ ర చస ర .

ప భగ కనర ఇవ ৷৷5.34.30৷৷

సత truthful in speech, వః god, చస ర like Brihaspati, మ ర sweet tongued,


ప handsome, భగః graceful, prosperous, a personification, కనర ః ఇవ like
Kamadeva.

"He is truthful in speech like Brihaspati, prosperous (like Kubera), sweet-tongued, handsome, graceful like
Kamadeva.
న ధః పహ చ మ రథః.

మవష యస మ త నః৷৷5.34.31৷৷

న ధః who shows anger to the proper person, పహ చ who punishes, the world, షః supreme,
మ రథః great charioteer, కః in the world, యస whose, మ త నః of the great self,
మవష under the shadow of whose shoulders refuge is taken.

"He shows anger to one who deserves it, he is the foremost charioteer of the world and he is a great self
under the shadow of whose shoulders the whole world takes refuge.
అపకృ శమప న ృగ ణ ఘవ .

ప తస ద యత ల ৷৷5.34.32৷৷

న since, ఘవ Rama, మృగ ణ in the form of a deer, ఆ శమప from the hermitage,
అపకృష were abducted, isolated place, అప you are borne away, అ you, తస its,
యత ల result, ద you will see.

"You will see the consequences of the action of Ravana who abducted you deceitfully in the form of deer
when Rama was away from the hermitage.
న వణం సం వ ష ర .

షప ౖ ర ల వ వ ః৷৷5.34.33৷৷

హం తస త శ గతః.

త న ః రస ం శలమ బ ৷৷5.34.34৷৷

ర heroic, యః who, న soon, ష ప :ౖ released in great anger, జ ల ః by burning,


వ ః ఇవ like fire, ఇ with arrows, సం in war, వణ Ravana, వ ష would slay, న
therefore, తః envoy, తః sent, ఇహ here, త త శ your presence, ఆగతః I have come,
త న due to separation from you, ః రః filled with sorrow, సః he, to you, శల
welfare, అ బ asking.

"Heroic Rama will soon release many scorching, fiery arrows in anger and kill Ravana. I seek your
permission as an envoy of Rama. Filled with grief by your separation, he has made inquiries about your
welfare.
ల ణశ మ ననవరనః.

అ ద మ స ం శలమ బ ৷৷5.34.35৷৷

మ ః brilliant, ననస వరనః delight of Sumitra, మ ః long-armed one, సః


ల ణశ Lakshmna, to you, అ ద offering salutations, శల welfare, అ బ enquired.

"The brilliant, long-armed Lakshmana, delight of Sumitra enquires about your welfare and offers salutations
to you.

మ called Sugriva, సః నరః that vanara, you, శల well-being, అ బ
asked.

"O goddess like lady! Rama's friend Sugriva, king of vanara chieftans inquires about your well-being.
త ంస ర మ ంస వ స ల ణః.

వ వశ గ ৷৷5.34.37৷৷

స వః together with Sugriva, సల ణః and Lakshmna, మః Rama, you, త always,


స ర remembers, Vaidehi, వశ under the clutches of she-demons, ఆగ come,
luckily, వ you are alive.

"O Vaidehi! Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva always remember you. Luckily you are alive even though you
are under the clutches of she-demons.
న ద మం ల ణం చ మ బల .

మ నర ం వం జస ৷৷5.34.38৷৷

మ Rama, మ బల mighty, ల ణం Lakshmana, నర among crores of vanaras,


మ in the midst, అ జస of a hero of unlimited prowess, వం చ also Sugriva, న very
soon, ద you will see.

"Very soon you will see mighty Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva of unlimited prowess surrounded by crores
of vanaras.
అహం వస హ మ నరః.

ప నగ ం ల ం లఙ మ ద ৷৷5.34.39৷৷

అహ I am, వస వః minister of Sugriva, హ మ called Hanuman, నరః a vanara,


మ ద great ocean, లఙ having leaped, ల ం నగ city of Lanka, ప షః I have
entered.

"I am Sugriva's minister known as Hanuman, a vanara who entered the city of Lanka after leaping over the
great ocean.
కృ పద సం వణస త నః.

ం ద ప హం స త ప కమ ৷৷5.34.40৷৷

త నః cruel-minded, వణస Ravana's, : on the head, పద స placing my foot, కృ


of having done, ప కమ valour, స త using, అహ I, you, ద to see, ఉప తః
came here.

"Setting my foot with my valour on the head of the cruel-minded Ravana, using my valour, I came here to
see you.
హమ త య మవగచ .

శ త జ శదత వద మమ৷৷5.34.41৷৷

am not, ఏ such, శ suspicion, త జ shake off, వదతః as I speak, మమ my, శదత you

"O goddess-like lady! I am not a deceitful person as you suppose me to be. Shake off your suspicion as I
speak to you and trust me."

On hearing about Rama from the bull among vanaras, thus spoke Vaidehi politely in a sweet voice:
క ణ సంసరః కథం ల ణ .

న ంన ం చ కథ త గమః৷৷5.35.2৷৷

to you, ణ with Rama, సంసరః contact, క where, ల ణ Lakshmana, కథ how, do


you assess, న of vanaras, న ం చ a human, స గమః union, కథ how, ఆ took
place.

"Where did you come in contact with Rama? How did you assess Lakshmana? How did an alliance of
vanaras and humans take place?

యస చ న ం కస ৷৷5.35.3৷৷

నర O vanara, మస Rama's, ల ణస చ and Lakshmana's, those, identification


marks, those, స చ you may tell, to me, యః again, కః sorrow, న not, స
entire account.

"O vanara! tell me all about the identification marks of Rama and Lakshmana again so that grief does not
enter my mind.
దృశం తస సం నం పం మస దృశ .

కథ కథం ల ణస చ శంస ৷৷5.35.4৷৷

started telling.

Questioned thus by Vaidehi, Hanuman, son of the Wind-god started describing Rama's physique as it is.

భ ః కమలప సం నం ల ణస చ৷৷5.35.6৷৷

కమలప eyes like lotus petals, Vaidehi, న even though you know, by good fortune,
భ ః husband's, ల ణస చ and Lakshmana's, సం న form and distinguishing marks, ప పృచ
have asked, బత indeed.

"O Vaidehi with eyes like lotus petals! although you know your husband's and Lakshmana's form and
distinguishing marks, it is my good fortune that you asked me
(to describe them).

O large-eyed lady, మస Rama's, ల those distinguishing marks, ల ణస చ


and Lakshmana's, those, ల signs, them, వదతః as I describe, myself, శృ listen.

"O large-eyed lady! I will describe those distinguishing marks of Rama and Lakshmana Listen.
మః కమలప స ర సత మ హరః.

ప ణ సమ న ః ప జన త ৷৷5.35.8৷৷

జన త O Janaka's daughter, మః Rama, కమలప ః one who has eyes like lotus petals,
సర సత మ హరః one who delights all beings, ప ణ సమ న ః endowed richly with charm and
politeness, ప తః born with.

"O daughter of Janaka! Rama with eyes like lotus petals is a person born with a delightful form, richly
endowed with indescribable charm and politeness.
జ త స శః మ పృ సమః.

బృహస స యశ స పమః৷৷5.35.9৷৷

జ in effulgence, ఆ త స శః vies with the Sun, మ in tolerance, పృ సమః equals the


earth, in intelligence, బృహస సమః equal to Brihaspathi, యశ in fame, స పమః equals
Indra.

"He vies with the Sun in effulgence, with earth in forbearance, with Brihaspati in intelligence, and in fame
with Indra.

"Rama is a protector of the entire world of living beings not to speak of his own people. He is a protector of
his own race. He guards righteousness. He is a scorcher of enemies.

మ ంచ కస క ర చ సః৷৷5.35.11৷৷

O beautiful lady, మః Rama, కస world's, ర ర స of the four classes of society, ర


protector, సః he, of all the worlds, మ code and conduct, క maker, ర వ
will make others follow.

"O beautiful lady! Rama is a protector of the four classes of society (Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra)
in the world. He follows codes of conduct and makes others follow them.
అ న త రం బహ చర వ తః.

ప ర జః ప రజశ కర ৷৷5.35.12৷৷

అ luminous, అత ర intensely, అ తః worshipped, బహ చర వ observing the vow of


self-control, తః one who is steadfast, for the holy men, ఉప రజః recognises right action,
కర rites, ప రజశ of the ways of administration.

"He is luminous and highly revered. He observes vow of self-control. He is steadfast and recognises services
rendered by sages. He is aware of the rites and the ways of administration.
జ తశ హ .

త లసమ తశ పరనపః৷৷5.35.13৷৷

జ తశ well-trained in state-craft, హ of the brahmins, ఉ a devotee,


త learned in scriptures, లసమ న ః endowed with excellent conduct, తః is disciplined,
పరనపః is a scorcher of enemies.

"He is well-trained in state-craft. He is devoted to brahmins. Endowed with an excellent conduct, he is


learned in scriptures and a scorcher of enemies.
య ద తశ ద తః.

ధ చ చ తః৷৷5.35.14৷৷

య ద తశ versed in Yajurveda, ద ః by the knowers of the Vedas, తః respected,


ధ చ and in Dhanurveda also, in other Vedas also, చ Vedangas (auxillary Vedas)
also, తః is an expert.

"He is versed in Yajurveda and is respected by Vedic scholars. He has mastered Dhanurveda and other Vedas
and auxillary Vedas as well.

క వః with conch-shaped neck, ననః with an auspicious countenance, ఢజ ః has round

"O god-like lady! Rama has broad shoulders, strong arms, conch-shaped neck and an auspicious
countenance. With his fleshy round arms and coppery-red eyes, he is renowned in all the worlds.
స న ష గవరః ప ప .

సమ స మ భ వరం మం స తః৷৷5.35.16৷৷

స న షః his tone is resonant like the drums, గవరః has beautiful shining complexion,
ప ప full of valour, సమః not too tall or short, సమ భ ఙః his limbs are symmetrical, మ
dark, వర colour, స తః has proportionate limbs.

"His tone is resonant like drums, he has a beautiful, dark, shining complexion. He has symmetrical, well-
proportioned limbs. He is neither too tall nor too short.
ర పలమ శ సమ న తః.

మ చ గ ర త శః৷৷5.35.17৷৷

రః has the three stiff limbs (chest, fist and wrists), పలమ శ long in three (arms, eye-brows and
scrotum), సమః has three even parts (locks of hair, knees and testicles), elevated in three parts
(abdomen, navel and chest), ఉన తః raised, చ all the three parts (soles, nails and eyes), గః has
coppery reddish colour, త శః all over, in the three parts (the underlines of feet, the hair and the
reproductive organs), గ రః is majestic.

"He has three stiff parts, three long parts, three even parts, three shining parts, elevated in three parts, has
three raised parts, his body has lines in three parts and is of coppery reddish colour in three parts. He has a
majestic look.
వ ం ర వనతశ ర ఙ ర .

చ ష లశ ఖశ శ స మః৷৷5.35.18৷৷

వ has three folds on his neck, ర వనతః his nipples and middle of his soles are depressed,
చ ర ఙః four parts of his body are depressed-neck, penis, shanks and back, ర has three spirals
in the head, చ ష లః has four lines under his thumb, చ ఖః has four lines on the forehead,
చ ః he is four cubits in height, చ స మః he has arms, knees, cheeks and thighs well
proportioned

"He has three folds in the skin of his neck and belly, is depressed in the middle of his soles and the nipples,
undersized at four places-the neck, penis, shanks and back, has three spirals on his head, has four lines under
his thumb, has four lines on his forehead, he is a person with four cubits in height and symmetrical arms,
cheeks and thighs.
చ రశసమద న శ రం షశ ర ః.

మ షహ సశ పఞ షవంశ ৷৷5.35.19৷৷

చ రశసమద న ః he is person with the fourteen parts of his body (eye-brows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips,
nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks) in good proportion, చ రం షః he
is one with four sharp teeth, చ ర ః he moves like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands,
మ షహ సశ he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws, పఞ గ: he is one with five smooth
parts (hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet), అషవంశ his eight parts of the body (backbone, trunk, limbs,
fingers, toes, nose, eyes and testicles) are long.

"He is a person with his pairs of eye-brows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles,
loins, arms, legs and buttocks in good symmetry; he has four sharp teeth. He walks in different gaits like a
lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands; he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws. He has
smooth hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet and his eight parts of his body namely back, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes,
eyes and testicles are long.
దశప దశబృహ క .

ష న నవత ఘవః৷৷5.35.20৷৷

ఘవః Rama, దశపద ః ten lotus-like limbs (eyes, face, mouth, tongue, lips, cheeks, nipples, nails, feet
and hands), దశబృహ he is one with ten well-proportioned limbs (head, forehead, ears, neck, chest, heart,
belly, hands, legs, buttocks), ః covered with three aspects (splendour, fame and glory), పః well
known, క two white limbs- teeth and eyes, ష న తః he has six elevated limbs (nose, shoulders,
forehead, chest and arm pits), నవత ః has nine fine features (moustache, nails, knuckles, beard, skin, hair,
penis, acumen, perception), ః he pursues spiritual merit, worldly
comforts and sensual delight in three periods-forenoon, middday and evening of the day, follows
righteous principles.

"Ten limbs of the body resemble lotuses. He has proportionate limbs. He is known by the virtue of his
spledour, fame and glory. Both his teeth and eyes are fair. Six parts of his body are elevated, nine parts of his
body are fine and sharp. He pursues spiritual merit, worldly comfort and sensual delight in three periods of
the day-forenoon, midday and evening. He always adopts the righteous way of life.
సత ధర పర సఙ గ రతః.

శ ల గజస ర క యంవదః৷৷5.35.21৷৷

సత ధర పరః established in truth and righteousness, prosperous, స ఙ గ రతః he is


involved in both accumulation and favourable disposition towards others, శ ల గజః who discharges
his duties at proper time and place, సర క యంవదః who is loved by all for his endearing words.

"He is ever established in truth and righteousness. He is prosperous and desires to accumulate wealth in order
to shower favour on others. He knows the right use of time and place in discharging his duties. He has
endeared himself to all by his words.
తస చ త రప తః.

అ ణ ణ వత ధః৷৷5.35.22৷৷

తస his, తః born of a different mother, brother, అప తః one who has never been
defeated, ః Saumitri, అ ణ in affection, ణ in charm, వ in virtues, త ధః
similar to him.

"His invincible brother Saumitri born of a different mother is a replica of Rama in affection, charm and
virtues.

"While earnestly searching for you all over the earth both tigers among men came in contact with us.
వ ర చర వ న .

దదర ర ృగప ం ర వ త ৷৷5.35.24৷৷

ఋశ కస పృ బ దపస .

ర ర నం వం యదర న ৷৷5.35.25৷৷

వ for you, ర while searching, వ న all over the earth, చర while both were
wandering, they both, బ దపస filled with many trees, ఋశ కస పృ on the
mountain Rshyamuka, ఆ న seated, ర న by the elder brother, అవ త one who has been
thrown out, ః brother's, భ ర frightened, యదర న one who is pleasing to see,
మృగప lord of animals, వ Sugriva, దదర ః both of them saw.

"While both of them were wandering, searching for you all over the earth they saw Sugriva, the lord of
animals who had been thrown out of kingship by his elder brother and was living on the mountain
Rshyamuka frightened of him.
వయం హ జం తం వం సత సఙర .

ప చ మ ర వ త ৷৷5.35.26৷৷

వయం we too, ర న by his elder brother, from the kingdom, అవ త deposed,


సత సఙర one who is committed to truth, హ జ king of vanaras, త him, వ Sugriva,
ప చ మ we serve him.

"Sugriva, king of vanaras who is committed to defend truth has been deposed from the kingdom by his elder
brother. We keep attending on him.
తత రవస ధ ః పవర .

ఋశ కస లస రమ ం శ గ ৷৷5.35.27৷৷

తతః then, రవస clad in bark robes, ధ ః పవర armed with powerful bows, both,
ఋశ కస లస on the Rshyamukha mountain, రమ beautiful, శ location, ఉ గ both
reached.

"Both the princes clad in bark robes and armed with powerful bows reached the beautiful location of
Rshyamukha mountain.
స దృ నర ధ నరరభః.

అవ సస ఖరం భయ తః৷৷5.35.28৷৷

సః he, నరరభః bull among vanaras, ధ armed with bows, both of them, నర tigers
among men, దృ on seeing, భయ తః deluded with fear, తస from that, ః mountain, ఖర
top, అ తః jumped.

"On seeing the tigers among men armed with bows, Sugriva, the bull among vanaras jumped from the
mountain deluded with fear and reached the peak.
తతస ఖ త న వ వ తః.

త స పం వ ష స సత ర ৷৷5.35.29৷৷

తతః thereafter, సః he, న నః lord of vanaras, త on that, ఖ mountain top, వ వ తః staying


there, వ me only, త ః of both of them, స ప towads, సత ర quickly, ష స sent.

ప తతత realised the true position, సమ filled with pleasure, షర two bulls
among men, both, మ by me, పృష back, ఆ ప placing, తం శ to that place,

"I recognised the true status of both the mighty men who were filled with joy, placed them on my back, and
reached the mountain-top.

మ త to the great self, య to Sugriva, త న faithfully, reported by me, త ః of


both of them, అ న స got to know each other through conversation, భృశ fond, ః

"I reported faithfully about both the high-souled men to Sugriva. As they got to know each other through
conversation a fast friendship developed between them.

తతః then, సమ full of joy, both, హ శ రన శ king of monkeys and the king of people,

"Then Rama, consoled Sugriva who was dethroned and abandoned on acount of a woman by his brother Vali,
endowed with great prowess.

తతః then, ల ణః Lakshmana, అ షకర ణః one who is adept in accomplishing tasks with ease, మస
Rama's, త శజ on account of your loss, క grief, న య to the lord of vanaras,

"Then Lakshmana spoke to the lord of vanaras, Sugriva about your loss and the grief caused to Rama, who is
adept in accomplishing difficult deeds with ease.

శర ః Dasaratha's son Rama's, క శన fire in the form of grief, them, పయ

"Rama looked at them and wept clasping them again and again in grief which inflamed like fire.

ః న immersed in sorrow, న by him, మ త by the great self, శ తం చ lay down, మ


by me also, ః by many, ః by words, కృ with great difficulty, నః again, ఉ తః
helped to get up.

"Rama, the great self, immersed in sorrow lay down on the ground. I also consoled him with great difficulty
and helped him to get up.

ఘవస హ సన దయ ৷৷5.35.43৷৷

మ ః long-armed one, సః ఘవః that Rama, సహ ః along with Lakshmana, those,


ః ః again and again, దర after showing, to Sugriva, న దయ presented.

"Long-armed Rama along with Lakshmana looked at them again and again and gave them to the care of
Sugriva.

"On account of sorrow caused by not being able to see you, Rama of Raghu dynasty is shaken up like a lofty
mountain is shaken by earthquake.

చరన ర మపశ న ృ త ৷৷5.35.47৷৷

నృ త daughter of a king, you, అపశ unable to see, ర very delightful, న


forests, న ః rivers, ప సవ చ and streams, చర while moving, ర happiness, న ఆ not
finding.

"Oh princess! unable to see you, Rama has found no joy in roaming delightful forests, rivers and streams.
స ంమ జ లః పం ప ఘవః.

స త నవం హ వణం జన త ৷৷5.35.48৷৷

జన త Oh daughter of Janaka, మ జ లః a tiger among men, సః ఘవః that Rama,


స త నవ along with his friends and relatives, వణ Ravana, హ after killing, you,
ప soon, ప will attain.

"Oh daughter of Janaka! after killing Ravana, along with his friends and relatives Rama, the tiger among
men, will meet you.
స మ వ ంత .

సమయం నం హ ం తవ షణం త ৷৷5.35.49৷৷

త then, మ Rama and Sugriva, ఉ both, స together with, న Vali, హ to


kill, త likewise, తవ your, అ షణ search, సమయ agreement, అ reached.

"(Having become friends) Rama and Sugriva together reached an agreement to kill Vali and search for you.

"Then Rama quickly killed Vali in a combat and made Sugriva the lord of all troops of vanaras and bears.

Oh Illustrious lady!, మ వ ః of both Rama and Sugriva, ఐక alliance, ఏవ in that way,


సమ యత established, me, త ః their, త messenger, ఆగత came here, హ మన
Hanuman, you may know.

"Oh Illustrious lady! In that manner alliance was established between Rama and Sugriva. Know me to be
Hanuman, arrived here as their messenger.
స జ ం ప వస యహ శ .

త దరం ష స దశ మ బ ৷৷5.35.53৷৷

వః Sugriva, స జ his kingdom, ప having obtained, మ బ great army, హ శ


monkey leaders, స య after collecting, త దర for your sake, దశ ten, శః directions,
ష స sent.

"Having obtained his kingdom Sugriva despatched the vanara leaders to all ten directions (to search for you).
ఆ న ణ ణమ జ .

అ జప స ర తః ప మ ৷৷5.35.54৷৷

న ణ by the monkey leaders, మ జ very powerful one, ణ by Sugriva, ఆ ః ordered,


అ జప ః huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains, సర తః all over, మ the earth, ప
started moving.

"Following Sugriva's orders, the powerful monkey leaders huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains went
all over the earth (searching).

"We wasted many nights and days immersed in disappointment (for not being able to find you) and we
missed our path in the great Vindhya mountain.
వయం ర ల క ణ చ.

భ చ క జస ంస ంవ వ ః৷৷5.35.58৷৷

వయ we were, ర disappointed, లస of the time limit, అ క ణ చ exceeding,


క జస of monkey king's, భ చ out of fear also, life also, త to give up, వ వ ః

"We decided to give up our lives due to disappointment, transgression of the time limit fixed for us and fear
of the monkey lord (fear of facing the king without finding you).

వన impenetrable forest forts, ప సవ చ mountain streams, త having searched,


ః the queen's, పద feet, అ ద by not getting, life, త to give up, స ద ః
we decided.

"We decided to give up our lives since we were unable to see the feet of the queen (Sita) even after searching
the forest fortresses and the (banks of) mountain streams.

yourself, శం చ not found, త నః similarly Vali's, వధం చ and his killing, జ షః Jatayu's,
మరణం చ death also, అ క all of us, ప శ decision to die, పర వయ he was grieved.

ంన స ం ర .

ర తశ ర న ৷৷5.35.62৷৷

స according to the king's cmmand (that who ever overstays would be killed),
disappointed, ర when we were desiring to die, for such of us, నః to
us, ర వ as if to fulfil the task, ర powerful, మ gigantic, శ ః bird, ఆ తః came.

"When we were disappointed (in tracing you) and were at the point of death having been commanded by the
king (that whosoever overstays would be killed) a gigantic powerful bird appeared to fulfil our task.
గృ ధ జస దర ః స మ గృ ధ .

తృవధం దం వచనమ బ ৷৷5.35.63৷৷

గృ ధ జస of the king of vultures, దర ః brother, స మ called Sampati, గృ ధ king of


birds, తృవధ death of Jatayu, on hearing, with anger, ఇద this, వచన word,
అబ spoke.

"That king of vultures, Sampati was the brother of king of birds Jatayu. Hearing about the death of his
younger brother Sampati felt distresed and spoke in anger:
య న హతః క చ తః.

ఏత భవ న త ః৷৷5.35.64৷৷

my, య younger, brother, న by whom, హతః was killed, క where, తః was he


dropped, న త ః of best of vanaras, భవ ః by you, ఏత this, ఆ to tell, ఇ I
desire.

'O best of vanaras! by whom was my younger brother killed? Where was he dropped down? I wish you to
tell me all about that.
అఙ కథయతస జన మహద ధ .

తస his, స ః Samapati's, వరన that which was pleasing, త that, వచన word,

"Having heard Sampati's encouraging words all of us led by Angada departed immediately.

త దర నకృ హృ ః పవఙ ః৷৷5.35.68৷৷

పవఙ ః vanaras, త దర నకృ enthused to see you, హృ ః joyfully, ః satisfied,


from Vindhya, ఉ య having got up, గరస towards the sea, ఉతర అన the limit of the northern
direction, స ః reached.

"The happy monkeys were satisfied. Enthusiastic about seeing you, they rose from the Vindhya mountain
and reached the limit of the sea shore in the north.
అఙద ప స న ప ః.

ంజ ః న స దర నస ః৷৷5.35.69৷৷

అఙద ప ః Angada and other leaders, స all, త దర న ః enthusiastic to see you,


న sea shore, ఉప ః reached, ః they were frightened, నః again, worry, జ ః
felt.

అ హం హ న స గరం దతః.

వ వ య భయం వం జ ం శతం తః৷৷5.35.70৷৷

అథ then, అహ I, గర ocean, after looking at, దతః in desperate mood, హ న స


Vanara army's, వ intense, భయ fear, వ వ య after pushing aside, జ of yojanas,
శత one hundred, తః leaped.

"When the vanara army was feeling despondent at the sight of the ocean, I leaped across the sea, a hundred
yojanas, pushing aside all my fear.

అ O sinless lady, O divine lady, ఏత this, సర everything, య వృత as it happened,


to you, ఆ త narrated, me, అ షస you may speak, అహ I, శర ః Dasaratha's
son, తః messenger.

"O sinless lady! I have given you a faithful account. I am a messenger of Dasaratha's son. And you may
speak now, O divine lady!
తం ం మకృ గం త త గత .

వస వం ద స పవ త జ ৷৷5.35.73৷৷

O divine lady!, తం such me, మకృ గ have taken up Rama's mission, త త


on your account, ఇహ here, ఆగత came, వస వ minister of Sugriva, పవ త జ son of
Vayu, ద స you may know.

"O divine lady! Know that I have come here for your cause carrying out the mission of Rama. I am Sugriva'a
minister and son of the Wind-god.
శ తవ త స ర శ సభృ ం వరః.

ధ ల ణశ ల ణః৷৷5.35.74৷৷

సర శ సభృ among all wielders of weapons, వరః supreme, తవ your, త Rama of the
Kakutstha race, శ he is keeping well, ః of his venerable teacher, ఆ ధ in service, కః
engaged, ల ణః a man of auspicious signs, ల ణశ Lakshmana also.

"Your lord Rama of Kakutstha race, supreme among wielders of weapons is doing well. So is venerable
Lakshmana endowed with auspicious signs engaged in serving him.
తస ర వ భ సవ రతః.

అహ క స ప వవచ హ৷৷5.35.75৷৷

O queen, ర వతః of valourous, తవ your, భ ః husband's, తస his, seeking welfare, రతః


engaged, అహ I, వవచ at the behest of Sugriva, ఇహ here, ఏకః alone, పః reached.

"O queen! seeking the welfare of your Valiant husband I came here at the behest of Sugriva all alone.
మ యమస న చర మ .

"I can assume any form at my will. I searched for you without any help moving in the southern direction and

fortunately for me, అహ I, త శ your loss, అ చ regretting, హ of


the vanara army, స ప grief, తవ your, అ గమశంస by letting them know, అప I will
dispel their sorrow.

"Fortunately for me I can finally dispel the fear of the vanara chiefs who are regretting your loss, by letting
them know that you have been found.

oh queen, luckily, మమ my, గరలఙన crossing the ocean, న వ ర is not wasted,


fortunately, అహ I, త దర నకృత by the act of seeing you, ఇద thus, యశః fame, I
will attain.

"Oh queen! luckily for me, crossing the ocean has not gone in vain. I am fortunate because I will attain fame
of finding you.
ఘవశ మ ర ః పం మ పత .

స త నవం హ వణం ప ৷৷5.35.79৷৷

మ ర ః mighty hero, ఘవశ Raghava, స త నవ accompanied by friends and relatives,


ప king of demons, వణ Ravana, హ after killing, ప very soon, yourself,
అ పత will reach you.

"Mighty Raghava will take you after killing Ravana, the king of demons along with his kith and kin.

త గచ కరం పర తం స హ ః৷৷5.35.80৷৷

Vaidehi, among the mountains, ఉతమః the best one, ల మ Malyavan, ః


mountain, తతః from there, స Kesari, హ ః monkey, క ర Gokarna, పర త mountain, గచ
went.

"Oh Vaidehi! there is a famous mountain called Malyavan. From there a monkey called Kesari went to
mount Gokarna.
సచ వ షః మమ మ క ః.

న ప ః శమ దన దర ৷৷5.35.81৷৷

"He (Kesari) is said to be my father by the divine sages. He retrieved a piece of land in a holy spot of that sea
shore and killed Sambasadana, a demon who was oppressing righteous people.

Mythili, అహ I, తస his, హ ణః monkey's, in the land, న by the Wind-god, తః


born, న కర ఏవ by my own act, by people, హ Hanuman, తః came to be
known.

"O Mythili! I was born in that land retrieved by the Wind-god. I am known as Hanuman by virtue of my own
action.
రం భ మ ః.

అ ఘ న న ৷৷5.35.83৷৷

Vaidehi!, ర for inspiring confidence, మ by me, భ ః your husband's, ః


qualities, ఉ ః are described, O queen!, ఘవః Raghava, అ very soon, you, ఇతః from
here, న he will take you away, అన lady free from sins.

"In order to inspire confidence in you about me I have narrated the virtues of your husband. O sinless queen!
Rama will take you from here very soon".
ఏవం కక .

ఉపప ర తం తమవగచ ৷৷5.35.84৷৷

కక tormented by grief, Sita, ఏవ in that way, ః with possible reasons,


having trusted, ఉపప ః by the evidences, అ ః with identification, త him, త as a
messenger, అవగచ she understood.

The grief-stricken Sita trusted him by his logical presentation of reasons as well as identifications. She
believed that he was a messenger (of Rama).
అ లం చ గ హరం పహ ణ చ న .

ం వ కప ం ననజం జల ৷৷5.35.85৷৷

న Janaki, అ ల immeasurable, హర happiness, గ చ experienced, పహ ణ in her joy,


వ కప through her curved eyelashes, from both eyes, ఆననజ arising out of joy,
జల tears, చ shed.

Janaki experienced immeasurable happiness and shed tears of joy through her curved eyes.

she, హ మన Hanuman, వ క clearly, క the monkey, మన realised, అన ఇ none

ఉత later, ఉ చ spoke.

She realised that the monkey was none other than Hanuman. Then he looked at her who was pleasing to see
and spoke again:

ంక కథం చ ప మ హ ৷৷5.35.88৷৷

Mythili, to you, ఏత సర everything, ఆ త is narrated, స శ calm down,


what, క shall I do, to you, కథం or how, చ it pleases, అహ I, ప I will go
back.

"Mythili, everything I intended to say has been narrated to you. Calm yourself down. What shall I do? Or
else, tell me what pleases you. I shall go back.
హ సంయ శమ ద క ప ణ మహ ద .

త పభ ప వతస త మశ నరః৷৷5.35.89৷৷

Maithili, సంయ in a fight, శమ ద Sambasadana, అ when the demon, క పవ ణ


mighty monkey, మహ ద by the command of great sage, హ స where he was slain, అథ then,
పభవః by the spread of wind, ప వతః by his prowess, త త మః equal to him, నరః vanara,
అ I am.

"(My father) a mighty monkey killed Sambasadana in a battle on the command of a great seer. I am a vanara
(born to a monkey) by the impact of the Wind-god. I am equal to the Wind-god in power."

Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.

place.

"Where did you come in contact with Rama? How did you assess Lakshmana? How did an alliance of
vanaras and humans take place?
మస ల ణస చ నర.

యస చ న ం కస ৷৷5.35.3৷৷

నర O vanara, మస Rama's, ల ణస చ and Lakshmana's, those, identification


marks, those, స చ you may tell, to me, యః again, కః sorrow, న not, స
entire account.

"O vanara! tell me all about the identification marks of Rama and Lakshmana again so that grief does not
enter my mind.
దృశం తస సం నం పం మస దృశ .

కథ కథం ల ణస చ శంస ৷৷5.35.4৷৷

తస his, మస Rama's, ల ణస Lakshmana's, సం న form, దృశ how, ప form,


దృశ how does his look, ఊ thighs, కథ how, arms, కథ how, to me, శంస tell.

"What does Rama look like? And Laksmana? How are his thighs, arms? Tell me".

త మం య తత పచ క ৷৷5.35.5৷৷

by Vaidehi, ఏవ in that manner, ఉకః spoken, త జః son of the Wind-god, హ


Hanuman, తతః thereafter, మ Rama, య తత as it is, ఆ to describe, ఉపచ క he
started telling.

Questioned thus by Vaidehi, Hanuman, son of the Wind-god started describing Rama's physique as it is.

భ ః కమలప సం నం ల ణస చ৷৷5.35.6৷৷

కమలప eyes like lotus petals, Vaidehi, న even though you know, by good fortune,
భ ః husband's, ల ణస చ and Lakshmana's, సం న form and distinguishing marks, ప పృచ
have asked, బత indeed.

"O Vaidehi with eyes like lotus petals! although you know your husband's and Lakshmana's form and
distinguishing marks, it is my good fortune that you asked me
(to describe them).

"O large-eyed lady! I will describe those distinguishing marks of Rama and Lakshmana Listen.
మః కమలప స ర సత మ హరః.

ప ణ సమ న ః ప జన త ৷৷5.35.8৷৷

జన త O Janaka's daughter, మః Rama, కమలప ః one who has eyes like lotus petals,

సర స మ హరః one who delights all beings, ప ణ సమ న ః endowed richly with charm and
politeness, ప తః born with.

"O daughter of Janaka! Rama with eyes like lotus petals is a person born with a delightful form, richly
endowed with indescribable charm and politeness.
జ త స శః మ పృ సమః.

బృహస స యశ స పమః৷৷5.35.9৷৷

జ in effulgence, ఆ త స శః vies with the Sun, మ in tolerance, పృ సమః equals the


earth, in intelligence, బృహస సమః equal to Brihaspathi, యశ in fame, స పమః equals
Indra.

"He vies with the Sun in effulgence, with earth in forbearance, with Brihaspati in intelligence, and in fame
with Indra.
ర వ కస స జన ర .

ర స స వృతస ధర స చ పరనపః৷৷5.35.10৷৷

పరనపః scorcher of enemies, వ కస of the world of living beings, ర protector, స జనస of his
own people, అ ర protector, స స of his own, వృతస of the race, ధర స చ and guards
righteousness

"Rama is a protector of the entire world of living beings not to speak of his own people. He is a protector of
his own race. He guards righteousness. He is a scorcher of enemies.
కస ర ర స ర .

మ ంచ కస క ర చ సః৷৷5.35.11৷৷

O beautiful lady, మః Rama, కస world's, ర ర స of the four classes of society, ర


protector, సః he, of all the worlds, మ code and conduct, క maker, ర వ
will make others follow.

"O beautiful lady! Rama is a protector of the four classes of society (Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra)
in the world. He follows codes of conduct and makes others follow them.

ప ర జః ప రజశ కర ৷৷5.35.12৷৷

అ luminous, అత ర intensely, అ తః worshipped, బహ చర వ observing the vow of


self-control, తః one who is steadfast, for the holy men, ఉప రజః recognises right action,
కర rites, ప రజశ of the ways of administration.

"He is luminous and highly revered. He observes vow of self-control. He is steadfast and recognises services
rendered by sages. He is aware of the rites and the ways of administration.
జ తశ హ .

త లసమ తశ పరనపః৷৷5.35.13৷৷

జ తశ well-trained in state-craft, హ of the brahmins, ఉ a devotee,


త learned in scriptures, లసమ న ః endowed with excellent conduct, తః is disciplined,
పరనపః is a scorcher of enemies.

"He is well-trained in state-craft. He is devoted to brahmins. Endowed with an excellent conduct, he is


learned in scriptures and a scorcher of enemies.
య ద తశ ద తః.

ధ చ చ తః৷৷5.35.14৷৷

య ద తశ versed in Yajurveda, ద ః by the knowers of the Vedas, తః respected,


ధ చ and in Dhanurveda also, in other Vedas also, చ Vedangas (auxillary Vedas)
also, తః is an expert.

"He is versed in Yajurveda and is respected by Vedic scholars. He has mastered Dhanurveda and other Vedas
and auxillary Vedas as well.
ం మ ఃక వ ననః.

ఢజ జ తః৷৷5.35.15৷৷

goddess like lady, మః Rama, ం సః broad-shouldered, మ ః strong-armed,


క వః with conch-shaped neck, ననః with an auspicious countenance, ఢజ ః has round
shoulders, ః coppery-red eyes జ ః in all worlds, తః renowned.

"O god-like lady! Rama has broad shoulders, strong arms, conch-shaped neck and an auspicious
countenance. With his fleshy round arms and coppery-red eyes, he is renowned in all the worlds.
స న ష గవరః ప ప .

సమ స మ భ వరం మం స తః৷৷5.35.16৷৷

స న షః his tone is resonant like the drums, గవరః has beautiful shining complexion,
ప ప full of valour, సమః not too tall or short, సమ భ ఙః his limbs are symmetrical, మ
dark, వర colour, స తః has proportionate limbs.

"His tone is resonant like drums, he has a beautiful, dark, shining complexion. He has symmetrical, well-
proportioned limbs. He is neither too tall nor too short.

ర పలమ శ సమ న తః.

మ చ గ ర త శః৷৷5.35.17৷৷

రః has the three stiff limbs (chest, fist and wrists), పలమ శ long in three (arms, eye-brows and
scrotum), సమః has three even parts (locks of hair, knees and testicles), elevated in three parts
(abdomen, navel and chest), ఉన తః raised, చ all the three parts (soles, nails and eyes), గః has
coppery reddish colour, త శః all over, in the three parts (the underlines of feet, the hair and the
reproductive organs), గ రః is majestic.

"He has three stiff parts, three long parts, three even parts, three shining parts, elevated in three parts, has
three raised parts, his body has lines in three parts and is of coppery reddish colour in three parts. He has a
majestic look.
వ ం ర వనతశ ర ఙ ర .

చ ష లశ ఖశ శ స మః৷৷5.35.18৷৷

వ has three folds on his neck, ర వనతః his nipples and middle of his soles are depressed,
చ ర ఙః four parts of his body are depressed-neck, penis, shanks and back, ర has three spirals
in the head, చ ష లః has four lines under his thumb, చ ఖః has four lines on the forehead,
చ ః he is four cubits in height, చ స మః he has arms, knees, cheeks and thighs well
proportioned

"He has three folds in the skin of his neck and belly, is depressed in the middle of his soles and the nipples,
undersized at four places-the neck, penis, shanks and back, has three spirals on his head, has four lines under
his thumb, has four lines on his forehead, he is a person with four cubits in height and symmetrical arms,
cheeks and thighs.
చ రశసమద న శ రం షశ ర ః.

మ షహ సశ పఞ షవంశ ৷৷5.35.19৷৷

చ రశసమద న ః he is person with the fourteen parts of his body (eye-brows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips,
nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks) in good proportion, చ రం షః he
is one with four sharp teeth, చ ర ః he moves like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands,
మ షహ సశ he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws, పఞ గ: he is one with five smooth
parts (hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet), అషవంశ his eight parts of the body (backbone, trunk, limbs,
fingers, toes, nose, eyes and testicles) are long.

"He is a person with his pairs of eye-brows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles,
loins, arms, legs and buttocks in good symmetry; he has four sharp teeth. He walks in different gaits like a
lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands; he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws. He has
smooth hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet and his eight parts of his body namely back, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes,
eyes and testicles are long.
దశప దశబృహ క .

ష న నవత ఘవః৷৷5.35.20৷৷

ఘవః Rama, దశపద ః ten lotus-like limbs (eyes, face, mouth, tongue, lips, cheeks, nipples, nails, feet
and hands), దశబృహ he is one with ten well-proportioned limbs (head, forehead, ears, neck, chest, heart,

belly, hands, legs, buttocks), ః covered with three aspects (splendour, fame and glory), పః well
known, క two white limbs- teeth and eyes, ష న తః he has six elevated limbs (nose, shoulders,
forehead, chest and arm pits), నవత ః has nine fine features (moustache, nails, knuckles, beard, skin, hair,
penis, acumen, perception), ః he pursues spiritual merit, worldly
comforts and sensual delight in three periods-forenoon, middday and evening of the day, follows
righteous principles.

"Ten limbs of the body resemble lotuses. He has proportionate limbs. He is known by the virtue of his
spledour, fame and glory. Both his teeth and eyes are fair. Six parts of his body are elevated, nine parts of his
body are fine and sharp. He pursues spiritual merit, worldly comfort and sensual delight in three periods of
the day-forenoon, midday and evening. He always adopts the righteous way of life.
సత ధర పర సఙ గ రతః.

శ ల గజస ర క యంవదః৷৷5.35.21৷৷

సత ధర పరః established in truth and righteousness, prosperous, స ఙ గ రతః he is


involved in both accumulation and favourable disposition towards others, శ ల గజః who discharges
his duties at proper time and place, సర క యంవదః who is loved by all for his endearing words.

"He is ever established in truth and righteousness. He is prosperous and desires to accumulate wealth in order
to shower favour on others. He knows the right use of time and place in discharging his duties. He has
endeared himself to all by his words.
తస చ త రప తః.

అ ణ ణ వత ధః৷৷5.35.22৷৷

తస his, తః born of a different mother, brother, అప తః one who has never been
defeated, ః Saumitri, అ ణ in affection, ణ in charm, వ in virtues, త ధః
similar to him.

"His invincible brother Saumitri born of a different mother is a replica of Rama in affection, charm and
virtues.
నర త దర నస .

న మ ం కృ మ ర సఙ ৷৷5.35.23৷৷

నర tiger among men, they, ఉ both, త దర నస eager to see you, కృ


entire, మ earth, న both searching for, అ ః by us, అ స ఙ they met us.

"While earnestly searching for you all over the earth both tigers among men came in contact with us.
వ ర చర వ న .

దదర ర ృగప ం ర వ త ৷৷5.35.24৷৷

ఋశ కస పృ బ దపస .

ర ర నం వం యదర న ৷৷5.35.25৷৷

వ for you, ర while searching, వ న all over the earth, చర while both were
wandering, they both, బ దపస filled with many trees, ఋశ కస పృ on the

mountain Rshyamuka, ఆ న seated, ర న by the elder brother, అవ త one who has been
thrown out, ః brother's, భ ర frightened, యదర న one who is pleasing to see,
మృగప lord of animals, వ Sugriva, దదర ః both of them saw.

"While both of them were wandering, searching for you all over the earth they saw Sugriva, the lord of
animals who had been thrown out of kingship by his elder brother and was living on the mountain
Rshyamuka frightened of him.
వయం హ జం తం వం సత సఙర .

ప చ మ ర వ త ৷৷5.35.26৷৷

వయం we too, ర న by his elder brother, from the kingdom, అవ త deposed,


సత సఙర one who is committed to truth, హ జ king of vanaras, త him, వ Sugriva,
ప చ మ we serve him.

"Sugriva, king of vanaras who is committed to defend truth has been deposed from the kingdom by his elder
brother. We keep attending on him.
తత రవస ధ ః పవర .

ఋశ కస లస రమ ం శ గ ৷৷5.35.27৷৷

తతః then, రవస clad in bark robes, ధ ః పవర armed with powerful bows, both,
ఋశ కస లస on the Rshyamukha mountain, రమ beautiful, శ location, ఉ గ both
reached.

"Both the princes clad in bark robes and armed with powerful bows reached the beautiful location of
Rshyamukha mountain.
స దృ నర ధ నరరభః.

అవ సస ఖరం భయ తః৷৷5.35.28৷৷

సః he, నరరభః bull among vanaras, ధ armed with bows, both of them, నర tigers
among men, దృ on seeing, భయ తః deluded with fear, తస from that, ః mountain, ఖర
top, అ తః jumped.

"On seeing the tigers among men armed with bows, Sugriva, the bull among vanaras jumped from the
mountain deluded with fear and reached the peak.
తతస ఖ త న వ వ తః.

త స పం వ ష స సత ర ৷৷5.35.29৷৷

తతః thereafter, సః he, న నః lord of vanaras, త on that, ఖ mountain top, వ వ తః staying


there, వ me only, త ః of both of them, స ప towads, సత ర quickly, ష స sent.

"Thereafter the lord of vanaras staying on the mountain top quickly sent me to meet both of them.
వహం ష వవచ త .

పల ణసమ కృ ఞ ప తః৷৷5.35.30৷৷

అహ I, వవచ according to the instruction of Sugriva, ష two tigers among men,


ప two lords, పల ణసమ both endowed with charming appearance and auspicious marks,
both, కృ ఞ ః joined palms in salutation, ఉప తః approached.

ప తత మ సమ .

పృష ప తం శం షర ৷৷5.35.31৷৷

ప తతత realised the true position, సమ filled with pleasure, షర two bulls
among men, both, మ by me, పృష back, ఆ ప placing, తం శ to that place,
carried.

"I recognised the true status of both the mighty men who were filled with joy, placed them on my back, and
reached the mountain-top.
చత న యమ త .

త ర న స ద ృశం ర యత৷৷5.35.32৷৷

మ త to the great self, య to Sugriva, త న faithfully, reported by me, త ః of


both of them, అ న స got to know each other through conversation, భృశ fond, ః
friendship, అ యత developed.

"I reported faithfully about both the high-souled men to Sugriva. As they got to know each other through
conversation a fast friendship developed between them.
తత సమ హ శ రన శ .

పరస రకృ కథ ర వృత ৷৷5.35.33৷৷

తతః then, సమ full of joy, both, హ శ రన శ king of monkeys and the king of people,
ర వృత with their past, కథ with account, పరస రకృ they consoled each other.

తతస న స వం ల గజః.

రస జ ৷৷5.35.34৷৷

తతః thereafter, సః he, ల గజః the elder brother of Lakshmana, ఉ జ with great prowess,
by the brother, by Vali, on account of a woman, రస deposed, వ
Sugriva, న స consoled.

"Then Rama, consoled Sugriva who was dethroned and abandoned on acount of a woman by his brother Vali,
endowed with great prowess.
తతస శజం కం మ షకర ణః.

ల న య యన దయ ৷৷5.35.35৷৷

తతః then, ల ణః Lakshmana, అ షకర ణః one who is adept in accomplishing tasks with ease, మస
Rama's, త శజ on account of your loss, క grief, న య to the lord of vanaras,
య to Sugriva, న దయ revealed.

"Then Lakshmana spoke to the lord of vanaras, Sugriva about your loss and the grief caused to Rama, who is
adept in accomplishing difficult deeds with ease.

త ష త రం గహ గస ఇ ం ৷৷5.35.36৷৷

సః he, న న to the king of vanaras, ల న by Lakshmana, ఈ త spoken వచః words,


having heard, త then, గహ గసః overshadowed by the planet, అం వ like the Sun, అత ర
extremely, ష భః lustreless, ఆ became.

"Having heard the words of Lakshmana, the king of vanaras became extremely lustreless like the Sun
overshadowed by the planet Rahu.

భరణ మ త ৷৷5.35.37৷৷

స యఆ యహ థ ః.

సంహృ దర ర ం న సవ৷৷5.35.38৷৷

తతః at that time, ర by the demon, య ణ when you were borne away, త త
adorned your limbs, those, ఆభరణ bundle of ornaments, dropped down,
స all of them, ఆ య brought, హ థ ః vanara leaders, సంహృ ః with great joy, య
to Rama, దర ః showed, తవ your, గ ం whereabouts, న ః did not know.

యద మ పహృ చ.

స నవన వ త గత త ৷৷5.35.39৷৷

మ వ by me, ఉపహృ collected, those ornaments, య to Rama, ద gave, త


them, గత త lost senses, స నవ making jingling sound, అవ having scattered.

"I collected the ornaments and gave them to Rama. He lost his senses on seeing the
jingling ornaments scattered.
న దర కృ బ ధం తవ.

న వప న నప త ৷৷5.35.40৷৷

దర beautiful ones, తవ your, those, అ on his lap, కృ having placed, వ ప న by


an effulgent one looking like the divine, న by him, న divine self, బ ధ in many ways,
ప త wailed.

"The divine self who is effulgent like god wailed in many ways placing the beautiful ornaments on his lap.
పశ త దత మ తశ నః నః.

పయ శర క శన ৷৷5.35.41৷৷

them, పశ తః as looked at, దతః while he wept, నః నః again and again, మ తశ regretting,
శర ః Dasaratha's son Rama's, క శన fire in the form of grief, them, పయ
inflamed.

"Rama looked at them and wept clasping them again and again in grief which inflamed like fire.
శ తం చ రం న ః నమ త .

మ ః కృ తః నః৷৷5.35.42৷৷

ః న immersed in sorrow, న by him, మ త by the great self, శ తం చ lay down, మ


by me also, ః by many, ః by words, కృ with great difficulty, నః again, ఉ తః
helped to get up.

"Rama, the great self, immersed in sorrow lay down on the ground. I also consoled him with great difficulty
and helped him to get up.
దృ మ రర ః.

ఘవస హ సన దయ ৷৷5.35.43৷৷

మ ః long-armed one, సః ఘవః that Rama, సహ ః along with Lakshmana, those,


ః ః again and again, దర after showing, to Sugriva, న దయ presented.

"Long-armed Rama along with Lakshmana looked at them again and again and gave them to the care of
Sugriva.
స త దర ఘవః ప తప .

మహ జ ల త మ పర తః৷৷5.35.44৷৷

ఆ O divine lady, సః ఘవః that Rama, తవ your, అదర separation from you, త always,
జ ల burning, మహ great, అ in fire, అ పర తః ఇవ like a mountain of fire, ప తప ever
blazing.

"O divine lady! on account of your separation he is ever blazing like a mountain of fire (Samvartaka).
త త ృ తమ చ క చ ఘవ .

పయ మ నమగ ర గ యః৷৷5.35.45৷৷

త త ృ on account of, మ న the great one, తం ఘవ that Rama, అ చ not sleeping,


కః grief, చ intense anxiety, అగ ర like a furnace, అగ యః ఇవ like the three fires,
పయ keep intensely heated.

"Rama is burning like a furnace by (three fires) sleeplessness, grief and intense anxiety just as the three
sacred fires keep a fire-sanctuary intensely heated.
త దర న న ఘవః ప ల .

మహ క నమ వ చ యః৷৷5.35.46৷৷

తవ your, అదర న న by the sorrow of not being able to see you, ఘవః Rama of Raghu dynasty,

"On account of sorrow caused by not being able to see you, Rama of Raghu dynasty is shaken up like a lofty
mountain is shaken by earthquake.

చరన ర మపశ న ృ త ৷৷5.35.47৷৷

నృ త daughter of a king, you, అపశ unable to see, ర very delightful, న


forests, న ః rivers, ప సవ చ and streams, చర while moving, ర happiness, న ఆ not
finding.

"Oh princess! unable to see you, Rama has found no joy in roaming delightful forests, rivers and streams.
స ంమ జ లః పం ప ఘవః.

స త నవం హ వణం జన త ৷৷5.35.48৷৷

జన త Oh daughter of Janaka, మ జ లః a tiger among men, సః ఘవః that Rama,


స త నవ along with his friends and relatives, వణ Ravana, హ after killing, you,
ప soon, ప will attain.

"Oh daughter of Janaka! after killing Ravana, along with his friends and relatives Rama, the tiger among
men, will meet you.
స మ వ ంత .

సమయం నం హ ం తవ షణం త ৷৷5.35.49৷৷

త then, మ Rama and Sugriva, ఉ both, స together with, న Vali, హ to


kill, త likewise, తవ your, అ షణ search, సమయ agreement, అ reached.

"(Having become friends) Rama and Sugriva together reached an agreement to kill Vali and search for you.
తత ం ం ం స హ శ రః.

ంస గమ తః৷৷5.35.50৷৷

తతః thereafter, by both the heroes, by both of them, by both princes,


to Kishkinda, స గమ after reaching, హ శ రః king of vanaras, సః that, Vali,
in war, తః killed.

"Thereafter both the princes together arrived at Kishkinda and killed Vali, king of vanaras in a combat.
త హత తర న హ .

సర రహ స ం వమక త ৷৷5.35.51৷৷

తతః then, మః Rama, ఆహ in a combat, తర quickly, న Vali, హత killed, వ


Sugriva, సర రహ స for all troops of vanaras, ప king, అక made.

"Then Rama quickly killed Vali in a combat and made Sugriva the lord of all troops of vanaras and bears.

Oh Illustrious lady!, మ వ ః of both Rama and Sugriva, ఐక alliance, ఏవ in that way,


సమ యత established, me, త ః their, త messenger, ఆగత came here, హ మన
Hanuman, you may know.

"Oh Illustrious lady! In that manner alliance was established between Rama and Sugriva. Know me to be
Hanuman, arrived here as their messenger.
స జ ం ప వస యహ శ .

త దరం ష స దశ మ బ ৷৷5.35.53৷৷

వః Sugriva, స జ his kingdom, ప having obtained, మ బ great army, హ శ


monkey leaders, స య after collecting, త దర for your sake, దశ ten, శః directions,
ష స sent.

"Having obtained his kingdom Sugriva despatched the vanara leaders to all ten directions (to search for you).
ఆ న ణ ణమ జ .

అ జప స ర తః ప మ ৷৷5.35.54৷৷

న ణ by the monkey leaders, మ జ very powerful one, ణ by Sugriva, ఆ ః ordered,


అ జప ః huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains, సర తః all over, మ the earth, ప
started moving.

"Following Sugriva's orders, the powerful monkey leaders huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains went
all over the earth (searching).
తత ర వవచ ః.

చర వ ం కృ ం వయమ చ న ః৷৷5.35.55৷৷

తతః then, they, వయ we, అ others, న ః చ and the vanaras, వవచ ః eager to
carry out Sugriva's order, ర ః while searching, కృ entire, వ the earth, చర we
are moving about.

"Following Sugriva's orders, we, the monkeys, since then are moving about searching
the entire earth eager to find you or to carry out Sugriva's orders.
అఙ మల ర బలః.

ప తః క ల గబలసంవృతః৷৷5.35.56৷৷

"We wasted many nights and days immersed in disappointment (for not being able to find you) and we
missed our path in the great Vindhya mountain.
వయం ర ల క ణ చ.

భ చ క జస ంస ంవ వ ః৷৷5.35.58৷৷

వయ we were, ర disappointed, లస of the time limit, అ క ణ చ exceeding,


క జస of monkey king's, భ చ out of fear also, life also, త to give up, వ వ ః
decided.

"We decided to give up our lives due to disappointment, transgression of the time limit fixed for us and fear
of the monkey lord (fear of facing the king without finding you).
త వన ప సవ చ.

అ ద పదం ః ంస ంస ద ః৷৷5.35.59৷৷

వన impenetrable forest forts, ప సవ చ mountain streams, త having searched,


ః the queen's, పద feet, అ ద by not getting, life, త to give up, స ద ః
we decided.

"We decided to give up our lives since we were unable to see the feet of the queen (Sita) even after searching
the forest fortresses and the (banks of) mountain streams.
దృ ప ంశ స నర ఙ .

భృశం ర మగ ః పర వయదఙదః৷৷5.35.60৷৷

తవ శం చ నశ వధం త .

ప శమ కం మరణం చ జ షః৷৷5.35.61৷৷

oh Vaidehi, ప when we decided to die, స all, నర ఙ vanara leaders,


దృ on seeing, అఙదః Angada, భృశ intensely, ర in the sea of sorrow, మగ ః plunged, తవ
yourself, శం చ not found, త నః similarly Vali's, వధం చ and his killing, జ షః Jatayu's,
మరణం చ death also, అ క all of us, ప శ decision to die, పర వయ he was grieved.

ంన స ం ర .

ర తశ ర న ৷৷5.35.62৷৷

స according to the king's cmmand (that who ever overstays would be killed),
disappointed, ర when we were desiring to die, for such of us, నః to
us, ర వ as if to fulfil the task, ర powerful, మ gigantic, శ ః bird, ఆ తః came.

"When we were disappointed (in tracing you) and were at the point of death having been commanded by the

king (that whosoever overstays would be killed) a gigantic powerful bird appeared to fulfil our task.
గృ ధ జస దర ః స మ గృ ధ .

తృవధం దం వచనమ బ ৷৷5.35.63৷৷

గృ ధ జస of the king of vultures, దర ః brother, స మ called Sampati, గృ ధ king of


birds, తృవధ death of Jatayu, on hearing, with anger, ఇద this, వచన word,
అబ spoke.

"That king of vultures, Sampati was the brother of king of birds Jatayu. Hearing about the death of his
younger brother Sampati felt distresed and spoke in anger:
య న హతః క చ తః.

ఏత భవ న త ః৷৷5.35.64৷৷

my, య younger, brother, న by whom, హతః was killed, క where, తః was he


dropped, న త ః of best of vanaras, భవ ః by you, ఏత this, ఆ to tell, ఇ I
desire.

'O best of vanaras! by whom was my younger brother killed? Where was he dropped down? I wish you to
tell me all about that.
అఙ కథయతస జన మహద ధ .

ర మ ణ శ య తథ ৷৷5.35.65৷৷

you, ఉ శ aiming at, మ ణ by a dreadful person, ర by the demon, జన in



Janasthana, మహద ధ great killing, య తథ as it happened faithfully, అ దః Angada, తస
to him, అకథయ told.

జ వధం ః త త జః.

ం శశంస వ వస ం వ ల ৷৷5.35.66৷৷

వ oh charming lady!, సః he, అ త జః Aruna's son, జ షః Jatayu's, వధం death,


having heard, ః తః became sad, yourself, వ ల in Ravana's palace, వస living,
శశంస narrated to us.

"Having heard about the death of Jatayu, O charming lady! that Sampati Aruna's son felt sad and told us that
you are at Ravana's palace.
తస తద చనం స ః వరన .

అఙద ప రం తతస మ వయ ৷৷5.35.67৷৷

తస his, స ః Samapati's, వరన that which was pleasing, త that, వచన word,
having heard, అఙద ప ః Angada and others, వయ all of us, ర quickly, తతః from there,
ప ః departed.

"Having heard Sampati's encouraging words all of us led by Angada departed immediately.

త దర నకృ హృ ః పవఙ ః৷৷5.35.68৷৷

పవఙ ః vanaras, త దర నకృ enthused to see you, హృ ః joyfully, ః satisfied,


from Vindhya, ఉ య having got up, గరస towards the sea, ఉతర అన the limit of the northern
direction, స ః reached.

"The happy monkeys were satisfied. Enthusiastic about seeing you, they rose from the Vindhya mountain
and reached the limit of the sea shore in the north.
అఙద ప స న ప ః.

ంజ ః న స దర నస ః৷৷5.35.69৷৷

అఙద ప ః Angada and other leaders, స all, త దర న ః enthusiastic to see you,


న sea shore, ఉప ః reached, ః they were frightened, నః again, worry, జ ః
felt.

అ హం హ న స గరం దతః.

వ వ య భయం వం జ ం శతం తః৷৷5.35.70৷৷

అథ then, అహ I, గర ocean, after looking at, దతః in desperate mood, హ న స


Vanara army's, వ intense, భయ fear, వ వ య after pushing aside, జ of yojanas,
శత one hundred, తః leaped.

"When the vanara army was feeling despondent at the sight of the ocean, I leaped across the sea, a hundred
yojanas, pushing aside all my fear.
ల మ ప .

వణశ మ దృషస ం చ కప ৷৷5.35.71৷৷

filled with demons, ల Lanka also, మ by me, at night, ప entered,


మ by me, వణశ Ravana also, దృషః is seen, కప immersed in sorrow, త ం చ you also.

"I entered at night the city of Lanka teeming with demons and saw Ravana and saw you immersed in sorrow.
ఏత సర తం య వృతమన .

అ షస ం శర రహ ৷৷5.35.72৷৷

అ O sinless lady, O divine lady, ఏత this, సర everything, య వృత as it happened,


to you, ఆ త narrated, me, అ షస you may speak, అహ I, శర ః Dasaratha's
son, తః messenger.

"O sinless lady! I have given you a faithful account. I am a messenger of Dasaratha's son. And you may
speak now, O divine lady!

O divine lady!, తం such me, మకృ గ have taken up Rama's mission, త త


on your account, ఇహ here, ఆగత came, వస వ minister of Sugriva, పవ త జ son of

"O divine lady! Know that I have come here for your cause carrying out the mission of Rama. I am Sugriva'a
minister and son of the Wind-god.
శ తవ త స ర శ సభృ ం వరః.

ధ ల ణశ ల ణః৷৷5.35.74৷৷

సర శ సభృ among all wielders of weapons, వరః supreme, తవ your, త Rama of the
Kakutstha race, శ he is keeping well, ః of his venerable teacher, ఆ ధ in service, కః
engaged, ల ణః a man of auspicious signs, ల ణశ Lakshmana also.

"Your lord Rama of Kakutstha race, supreme among wielders of weapons is doing well. So is venerable
Lakshmana endowed with auspicious signs engaged in serving him.
తస ర వ భ సవ రతః.

అహ క స ప వవచ హ৷৷5.35.75৷৷

O queen, ర వతః of valourous, తవ your, భ ః husband's, తస his, seeking welfare, రతః


engaged, అహ I, వవచ at the behest of Sugriva, ఇహ here, ఏకః alone, పః reached.

"O queen! seeking the welfare of your Valiant husband I came here at the behest of Sugriva all alone.
మ యమస న చర మ .

ద గ త ర చ ৷৷5.35.76৷৷

త ర చ while searching for your location, మ by a person who can take any form at
will, అస న without any help, చర while moving, మ by myself, ఇయ this, ద
southern direction, అ reached.

"I can assume any form at my will. I searched for you without any help moving in the southern direction and
reached this place .
హం హ ంత శమ చ .

అప స పం త గమశంస ৷৷5.35.77৷৷

fortunately for me, అహ I, త శ your loss, అ చ regretting, హ of


the vanara army, స ప grief, తవ your, అ గమశంస by letting them know, అప I will
dispel their sorrow.

"Fortunately for me I can finally dispel the fear of the vanara chiefs who are regretting your loss, by letting
them know that you have been found.
మమ న వ రం గరలఙన .

oh queen, luckily, మమ my, గరలఙన crossing the ocean, న వ ర is not wasted,


fortunately, అహ I, త దర నకృత by the act of seeing you, ఇద thus, యశః fame, I
will attain.

"Oh queen! luckily for me, crossing the ocean has not gone in vain. I am fortunate because I will attain fame
of finding you.
ఘవశ మ ర ః పం మ పత .

స త నవం హ వణం ప ৷৷5.35.79৷৷

మ ర ః mighty hero, ఘవశ Raghava, స త నవ accompanied by friends and relatives,


ప king of demons, వణ Ravana, హ after killing, ప very soon, yourself,
అ పత will reach you.

"Mighty Raghava will take you after killing Ravana, the king of demons along with his kith and kin.

త గచ కరం పర తం స హ ః৷৷5.35.80৷৷

Vaidehi, among the mountains, ఉతమః the best one, ల మ Malyavan, ః


mountain, తతః from there, స Kesari, హ ః monkey, క ర Gokarna, పర త mountain, గచ
went.

"Oh Vaidehi! there is a famous mountain called Malyavan. From there a monkey called Kesari went to
mount Gokarna.
సచ వ షః మమ మ క ః.

న ప ః శమ దన దర ৷৷5.35.81৷৷

వ ః by the divine sages, షః predicted, మమ my, father, సః మ క ః that great monkey,


న ప ః of lord of rivers, ocean, holy, in a place, శమ దన Sambasadanam, ఉదర
raised.

"He (Kesari) is said to be my father by the divine sages. He retrieved a piece of land in a holy spot of that sea
shore and killed Sambasadana, a demon who was oppressing righteous people.
త హం హ ణః న .

హ వ కర ৷৷5.35.82৷৷

Mythili, అహ I, తస his, హ ణః monkey's, in the land, న by the Wind-god, తః


born, న కర ఏవ by my own act, by people, హ Hanuman, తః came to be
known.

"O Mythili! I was born in that land retrieved by the Wind-god. I am known as Hanuman by virtue of my own
action.
రం భ మ ః.

అ ఘ న న ৷৷5.35.83৷৷

Vaidehi!, ర for inspiring confidence, మ by me, భ ః your husband's, ః


qualities, ఉ ః are described, O queen!, ఘవః Raghava, అ very soon, you, ఇతః from
here, న he will take you away, అన lady free from sins.

"In order to inspire confidence in you about me I have narrated the virtues of your husband. O sinless queen!
Rama will take you from here very soon".
ఏవం కక .

ఉపప ర తం తమవగచ ৷৷5.35.84৷৷

కక tormented by grief, Sita, ఏవ in that way, ః with possible reasons,


having trusted, ఉపప ః by the evidences, అ ః with identification, త him, త as a
messenger, అవగచ she understood.

The grief-stricken Sita trusted him by his logical presentation of reasons as well as identifications. She
believed that he was a messenger (of Rama).
అ లం చ గ హరం పహ ణ చ న .

ం వ కప ం ననజం జల ৷৷5.35.85৷৷

న Janaki, అ ల immeasurable, హర happiness, గ చ experienced, పహ ణ in her joy,


వ కప through her curved eyelashes, from both eyes, ఆననజ arising out of joy,
జల tears, చ shed.

Janaki experienced immeasurable happiness and shed tears of joy through her curved eyes.
తద దనం త మ య ణ .

అ భత కఇ ৷৷5.35.86৷৷

ః of large-eyed lady, త ః her, lovely, మ య ణ having wide white eyes


with tinge of red corners, త that, వదన face, కః released from Rahu, ఉ వ like the
Moon, అ భత shone.

Her face with large eyes with a tinge of red corners shone like the Moon released from Rahu.
హ మనం క ం వ కం మన న .

అ చహ ం తరం యదర ৷৷5.35.87৷৷

she, హ మన Hanuman, వ క clearly, క the monkey, మన realised, అన ఇ none


other than, అథ then, హ Hanuman, యదర a lady pleasing to see, her,
ఉ త later, ఉ చ spoke.

She realised that the monkey was none other than Hanuman. Then he looked at her who was pleasing to see
and spoke again:
ఏత సర తం స శ .

what, క shall I do, to you, కథం or how, చ it pleases, అహ I, ప I will go

"Mythili, everything I intended to say has been narrated to you. Calm yourself down. What shall I do? Or
else, tell me what pleases you. I shall go back.
హ సంయ శమ ద క ప ణ మహ ద .

త పభ ప వతస త మశ నరః৷৷5.35.89৷৷

Maithili, సంయ in a fight, శమ ద Sambasadana, అ when the demon, క పవ ణ


mighty monkey, మహ ద by the command of great sage, హ స where he was slain, అథ then,
పభవః by the spread of wind, ప వతః by his prowess, త త మః equal to him, నరః vanara,
అ I am.

"(My father) a mighty monkey killed Sambasadana in a battle on the command of a great seer. I am a vanara
(born to a monkey) by the impact of the Wind-god. I am equal to the Wind-god in power."

Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.

Mighty Hanuman, the son of the Wind-god again spoke to Sita humbly to inspire confidence in her.

మ O noble lady!, అహ I am, మతః learned, మస Rama's, తః envoy, నరః vanara,


O god-like lady, మ త which has the name of Rama inscribed, ఇద this,
అ యకం చ ring also, పశ you see.

"O noble lady! I am a vanara, an envoy of learned Rama. You see this ring with Rama's name inscribed on it,
O god-like lady !
పత రం త తం న దతం మ త .

స శ భ దం ణ ఃఖఫ హ ৷৷5.36.3৷৷

మ త great-self, న by him, దత given, తవ your, పత ర to make you trust, అ త is

She received the ornament that adorned her husband's hand and gazed at it and felt delighted as though her
husband had arrived.

త మ య ణ her white eyes with reddish tinge at the corners of the eyes, beautiful,
తద దనం her countenance, large-eyed, క released by Rahu, ఇ like the
Moon అ భత shone

Her beautiful countenance with large white eyes with a reddish tinge in the corners shone like the Moon
released from Rahu.
తత మ భరృస శహ .

ప యం కృ పశశంస మ క ৷৷5.36.6৷৷

తతః then, young lady, that Sita, భరృస శహ delighted at the news of her husband, మ
blushing lady, ప felt happy, య pleasing, కృ action, మ క by the great monkey,
పశశంస praised.

Young Sita felt delighted about her husband's news and blushed. By praising him for his action, she pleased
the great monkey.
నస ం సమరస ం జస ం న తమ.

దం సపదం త న పధ త ৷৷5.36.7৷৷

న తమ O foremost among the vanaras, ఏ న single handed, న by which, త by you, ఇద


this, సపద demon's abode, పధ త assailed, త you, నః you are very brave, త you,
సమరః are able, త you, జః are wise.

"O foremost among the vanaras! you have trespassed the abodes of demons all alone. You are mighty and
capable and wise.
శత జన ర గ మక లయః.

కమ ఘ న కమ ష కృతః৷৷5.36.8৷৷

కమ ఘ న by your admirable prowess, కమ advancing, శత జన రః extended over a


hundred yojanas, మక లయః abode of crocodiles, గరః ocean, ష కృతః is reduced to calf's hoof
mark.

"You with your admirable prowess have reduced this ocean which is an abode of crocodiles stretching over a
hundred yojanas to a cow's hoof mark.
న ం కృతం మ నరం నరరభ.

యస స వ స మ మః৷৷5.36.9৷৷

నరరభ O bull among vanaras, యస of whom, to you, వ from Ravana, స సః fear,


not there, స మ మః అ even excitement, న not, for you, కృత ordinary, నర monkey,
నమ I do not think.

"I do not think you are an ordinary monkey. You have no fear or excitement about Ravana. You are a bull
among vanaras.
అర చ క షమ సమ .

యద త న ణ త ৷৷5.36.10৷৷

క ష O best among monkeys, త by a knower of self, న by him, ణ by Rama, తః


sent, అ య you are, మ by me, సమ to converse, అర you deserve.

"O best of monkeys! As you have been sent by Rama, the knower of the self, it is proper for me to converse
with you.
ష ష ర నహ ప త .

ప కమమ య మత శం షతః৷৷5.36.11৷৷

రరః formidable, మః Rama, ప కమ valour, అ య without knowing, అప త without


testing, న ష ష would not send any body, షతః specially, మత శ to me.

"The formidable Rama will not send any one specially to me without testing him or knowing his valour.
చ శ ధ సత సఙరః.

ల ణశ మ ననవరనః৷৷5.36.12৷৷

luckily, ధ righteous, సత సఙరః one who follows truth, మః Rama, మ ః glorious,


ననవరనః enhancer of Sumitra's joy, ల ణశ Lakshmana also, శ well.

"To my luck, righteous Rama who abides in truth and glorious Lakshmana who enhances the joy of Sumitra
are keepng well.
శ య త ః ం గర ఖ .

మ ం దహ న తః৷৷5.36.13৷৷

త ః Kakutsthas, శ య if he is keeping well, ఉ తః generated, వ at the time of


dissolution of the era, గర ఖ ocean-girdled, మ earth, న with his rage, why, న
దహ not burning?

"Indeed if Kakutstha is well wherefore does he not burn the ocean-girdled earth in his rage as (the earth is
burnt) at the time of dissolution of the era?
అథ శ మ మ గ .

మ వ న ః మ మ పర యః৷৷5.36.14৷৷

అథ or else, both, మ even gods, గ in subduing, శ మ both are capable, but,


మమ my, ః వ for my sorrow, పర యః disaster, not there, మ I think.

"Both of them are capable of subduing even the gods. I think the reversal of my fate is reason for their
inaction.
క న వ మః క న ప తప .

ఉత చ తమః৷৷5.36.15৷৷

మః Rama, న వ తః క whether not depressed, న ప తప క indeed not suffering,


తమః great among men, ఉత necessary steps, action, will be carrying out
perhaps?

"Is Rama the greatest among men not depressed? Does he not feel helpless? He is (perhaps) taking necessary
steps (for my recovery).
క న నస నః నచ హ .

క ష నృప తః৷৷5.36.16৷৷

నృప ః తః king's son, నః depressed, స నః perplexed, న క not indeed, at work, న


చ హ is not spoiling, ష the actions of men of achievement, క
surely he is doing I trust

"I suppose prince Rama is not too depressed or perplexed to attend to his work. He will (perhaps) be doing
the duties expected of a manly person.
ధం య యమ వ .

హృత చ పరనపః৷৷5.36.17৷৷

పరనపః scorcher of enemies, ధ two kinds, ఉ య strategies, యమ even three


kinds of trategies, వ following, జ ః he who desires to be victorious, with friends,
హృ క has a good team indeed

"Tell me if Rama, scorcher of enemies, desirous of victory is following a two-fold policy (confrontation and
conciliation) A tough enemy cannot be defeated by following this method. A three-fold strategy has to be
adopted in this case (confrontation, conciliation and creation of dissension among his foes) to be victorious. I
hope he is well-disposed to his friends and has a good team!
క లభ ప గమ .

క త ణ తశ త ౖ రస ృతః৷৷5.36.18৷৷

allies, క లభ hope he will be making, ః with allies, అ అ గమ will want his

"Does the prince ever seek the blessings of gods or fall back upon personal effort as well as providence?

ఘవః Rama, ప due to separation, మ in me గత హః devoid of love, న క suppose


not, నర vanara, me, అ from this, వ స worry, ష క will liberate me
from this

"I hope Rama is not devoid of love towards me by my separation. O Vanara, hope he will liberate me from
this misery.

ఃఖ తర ద క న ద ৷৷5.36.21৷৷

త always, delight, ఉ తః one who deserves, అ of difficulties, అ తః he


does not deserve, ఘవః Rama, ఉతర later, ఃఖ sorrow, ఆ ద having experienced, న ద
క hope he is not depressed

"I hope Rama who deserves happiness and not suffering has not become depressed now , having experienced
a spate of sorrows.

స ః Kausalya's, త in the same manner, ః Sumitra's, త వ చ in the same way,


భరతస Bharata's, శల welfare, అ constantly, య క hope he is hearing

"I hope he regularly receives news about the welfare of Kausalya, Sumitra and Bharata.
మ న రః క న ఘవః.

క న మ మః క ం ర ష ৷৷5.36.23৷৷

రః respectable, ఘవః Rama, మ న on my account, న because of sorrow, క I


hope, మః Rama, నఅన మ ః he is not absent -minded, న క may be, me, క
ర ష will he save me?

"I hope respectable Rama is not too absent-minded for being immersed in sorrow on my account. Hope he

trust he will send

"Will Bharata, the devoted brother, send his formidable army of one akshavhini protected by ministers for
my cause? I trust he will. (Akshauhini = 109350 foot soldiers + 65610 horse soldiers + 21860 elephants
soldiers on chariot)
న ప వః క ష .

మత ృ హ ర ృ దనన ః৷৷5.36.25৷৷

మత ృ for my sake, illustrious, న ప ః king of vanaras, వః Sugriva,


దనన : those who use their teeth and nails as weapons, ః with valiant ones, హ ః with
vanaras, వృతః surrounded, ఏష క trust he will reach.

"I trust that the illustrious Sugriva surrounded by valiant vanaras who use their teeth and nails as weapons
will reach this place.
క చ ల ణ ర ననవరనః.

అస చ ర న ధ ష ৷৷5.36.26৷৷

"Can I hope to see Ravana and his relatives slain in the battle by fiery weapons in a short time?

ద యస న ర కః క త ర ం హృద క ৷৷5.36.29৷৷

ధ ప for the cause of establishing righteousness, జ sovereignty, త జతః given up, ం


including me, ప on foot, అరణ to the forest, నయతః conducted, యస whose, వ
agony, not shown, ః fear, న not, కః grief, న not, సః he, హృద at heart, ర courage,
క క will sustain I hope.

"Rama has given up sovereignty for the sake of establishing righteousness and led me into the forest on
foot.He had not then felt any fear, anxiety or grief at heart.Rama showed patience, instead. Hope he retains
them.
న స న చ న ః మ స .

వత హం త యం వ త వృ ం శృ ం యస ৷৷5.36.30৷৷

అస his, due to love, మ with me, స equal or, షః superior, mother, న not,
father, న not, అన ః any one else, not there, త messenger, యస beloved's, పవృ
news, వ until, శృ I may hear, వ so long, అహ I, య I wish to survive.

"His love for me is superior to his love for his father, mother or any one else. O messenger, I wish to survive
till I hear any news from my dear lord."
ఇ వ వచనం మ రం తం న నం మ ర .

ం నస స వ మం ర కం ర మ ৷৷5.36.31৷৷

queen, తం న న that vanara leader, మ ర very meaningful, మ ర sweet, వచన


word, ఉ having spoken, తస his, అ మ loving Rama, ర క said for Rama's cause,
వచః word, నః again, to hear, ర మ stopped.

The god-like lady, having spoken to the vanara leader in a very meaningful and sweet manner about her
beloved Rama, she remained silent, waiting to hear Hanuman's
attractive words of description of Rama once again.
వచనం మ కమః.

రస ఞ య క తరమ బ ৷৷5.36.32৷৷

మ కమః fearsome power, ః Maruti, ః Sita's, వచన word, on hearing, ర


on his head, అఞ both his hands, ఆ య placing, ఉతర reply, క words, అ బ said.

Having heard Sita, Hanuman endowed with fearsome power placed his folded hands on his head and said
this:
న హ ం మః కమల చ .

న ం నయ శ వ రనరః৷৷5.36.33৷৷

కమల చ lotus-eyed, you, ఇహ being here, మః Rama, న he does not know, న


therefore, రనరః Indra, శ వ like Sachi, you, ఆ immediately, నయ he is not taking

"O lotus-eyed one! Rama knows not that you are here. Therefore he has not taken you away immediately as
did Indra to rescue his wife Sachi.

మహ ం my, వచః word, వ after hearing, ఘవః Rama, హర ృ గణస troops of

"Kakutstha Rama will still the imperturbable abode of Varuna (ocean) by the torrent of his arrows and rid the
city of Lanka of all the demons.
త త యద న మృ ర స ః.

స ప మస స న వ ష ৷৷5.36.36৷৷

త త there, మస Rama's, ప on his way, అన in between, మృ ః death, స ః including all


demons, ః gods, స య if they obstruct, సః he, న even them, వ ష will slay.

"Thereafter, whoever comes Rama's way, be it gods or demons or even death or any one else he will destroy
them.
త దర న నసప తః.

న శర లభ మ ం త ఇవ పః৷৷5.36.37৷৷

ఆ O noble lady!, సః మః that Rama, తవ your, అదర న న on account of not seeing you, న in
sorrow, ప తః immersed, ం తః tormented by a lion, పః ఇవ like an elephant, శర న లభ is
not happy.

"O noble lady! not being able to see you, Rama is immersed in an ocean of sorrow, he has no solace like an
elephant tormented by a lion.
మల న చ న మన ణ చ.

య నయనం వ షం ణల .

O Sita, మల న చ by Malaya mountain, న by Vindhya, by Meru, ద ణ by


Dardura, లఫ న by roots and fruits, to you, శ I swear, య as, నయన with beautiful
eyes, వ ష lips like bimba fruit, ణల with lovely ear-rings, ఉ త risen,
రచ న వ like the full-moon, మస Rama's, ఖ face, ద you will see.

"O Sita! I swear in the name of mountains like Malaya, Vindhya, Meru, and Dardura (the abodes of monkeys
and bears) and by the roots and fruits as well (which are the food of vanaras). you will soon behold Rama
with beautiful eyes, red lips like bimba fruit, lovely ear-rings and a countenance resembling the full moon.
పం ద మం ప సవ .

శత క నం గ జస ర ৷৷5.36.40৷৷

Vaidehi, ప సవ on mount Prasravana, మ Rama, గ జస elephant's, ర on


the back, ఆ న seated, శత క ఇవ like Indra who has performed a hundred sacrifices, ప
soon, ద you will see.

"O Vaidehi, you will soon see Rama seated on the Prasravana mountain just as Indra (who performed a
hundred sacrifices) seated on the back of the king of elephants.
న ంసం ఘ ఙ న మ వ .

వన ం తం త ం భకమ పఞ మ ৷৷5.36.41৷৷

ఘవః Rama, ంస meat, న ఙ not eating, మ even wine, న వ he is not taking,


త always, పఞ మ fifth meal, త prescribed for, వన available in the forest, క
food, అ eats.

"Rama is not eating meat, nor drinking wine. He takes only the one fifth of a meal
(sanctioned for an ascetic) available in the forest.
వ దం న మశ న న స సృ .

ఘ పన త ద న త ৷৷5.36.42৷৷

ఘవః Rama, త ద న thinking of you, అన త with heart, from his limbs, దం flies,
వ అపన will not drive away, మశ mosquitoes, న not, insects, న not, స సృ
serpents, న not.

"Since you left, Rama has been always thinking sincerely of you, no longer drives away flies or mosquitoes
nor insects or serpents from his body (his mind entirely fixed on you).
త ం నప త ం కప యణః.

న నయ త మవశం గతః৷৷5.36.43৷৷

మః Rama, త ever, నపరః reflecting on you, త ever, కప యణః totally given to


grief, సః he, మవశం గతః absorbed in love for you, అన no other thoughts, న నయ he is not
thinking.

"Rama is always lost in thought. He is totally given to grief. Absorbed in love for you, he thinks of none
else৷৷
అ దస తతం మ చ న తమః.

మ ం ం హర న ధ ৷৷5.36.44৷৷

మః Rama, సతత always, అ దః he does not sleep, న తమః best of men, even if he sleeps,
calling out 'Sita', మ sweet, voice, హర uttering, ప ధ he wakes up.

"Rama, the best of men never goes to sleep and even if he drops off to sleep he mutters 'Sita, Sita!' in a sweet
voice in his sleep.
దృ ఫలం ష ం య న మ హర .

బ వం శ సం మ ష ৷৷5.36.45৷৷

ఫలం fruit or, ష ం or flowers, య such similar, మ హర delightful, అన any other


thing, దృ seeing, శ స while, వ alas, darling, you, బ శః in many,
అ ష speaks.

"Sighing deeply whenever Rama sees a fruit or a flower or any such delightful thing, he remembers you and
calls you out again and again, saying, 'alas, my darling !'
స త ం ప తప న వ త ష ణః.

ధృత వ జ మ త వ య కృత పయత ః৷৷5.36.46৷৷

god-like lady, మ great self, సః Rama, జ తః son of a king, త always, ప తప నః


suffering, saying Sita, వ you only, అ ష ణః keeps talking in the air, ధృత వతః firm
in his decision, తవ your, య to secure you only, కృత పయత ః makes efforts.

"O divine lady! prince Rama is ceaselessly suffering. He keeps talking to you in air. The determined Rama is
only thinking of your recovery ".
మస రన త మస నస న .

శర ద షచ వ హ బ వ৷৷5.36.47৷৷

మస Rama's, న because of his sorrow, స న equally sad, మస రన త devoid of


sorrow on hearing about Rama, she, హ the daughter of Videha, శర at the advent of
autumn, ద షచ Moon muffled by clouds, వ like the night, బ వ appeared.

Her sorrow was mitigated by references made by Hanuman about Rama.She felt equally sad when she heard
about Rama's agony. The princess from Videha appeared like a night at the advent of autumn, with the Moon
looking partly muffled by clouds and partly bright.
ఇ మ య యఆ నర ష ంశస రః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.

మ O noble lady!, అహ I am, మతః learned, మస Rama's, తః envoy, నరః vanara,


O god-like lady, మ త which has the name of Rama inscribed, ఇద this,
అ యకం చ ring also, పశ you see.

"O noble lady! I am a vanara, an envoy of learned Rama. You see this ring with Rama's name inscribed on it,
O god-like lady !
పత రం త తం న దతం మ త .

స శ భ దం ణ ఃఖఫ హ ৷৷5.36.3৷৷

మ త great-self, న by him, దత given, తవ your, పత ర to make you trust, అ త is


brought, స శ be calm, to you, భ ద let you be auspicious, ణ ఃఖఫ your sorows ended,
అ indeed.

"Be calm. Be blessed. Your sorrows have come to an end. This (the ring) is given by the great self, Rama, to
make you trust me.
గృ భ ః కర షణ .

భ ర వస న భవ ৷৷5.36.4৷৷

భ ః husband, కర షణ ornament that adorned his hand, గృ having received,


gazing, న Janaki, భ ర husband, స ఇవ as if reached, delighted, అభవ
became.

She received the ornament that adorned her husband's hand and gazed at it and felt delighted as though her
husband had arrived.
తద దనం త మ య ణ .

అ భత కఇ ৷৷5.36.5৷৷

త మ య ణ her white eyes with reddish tinge at the corners of the eyes, beautiful,
తద దనం her countenance, large-eyed, క released by Rahu, ఇ like the
Moon అ భత shone

Her beautiful countenance with large white eyes with a reddish tinge in the corners shone like the Moon
released from Rahu.
తత మ భరృస శహ .

ప యం కృ పశశంస మ క ৷৷5.36.6৷৷

తతః then, young lady, that Sita, భరృస శహ delighted at the news of her husband, మ

పశశంస praised.

Young Sita felt delighted about her husband's news and blushed. By praising him for his action, she pleased
the great monkey.

దం సపదం త న పధ త ৷৷5.36.7৷৷

న తమ O foremost among the vanaras, ఏ న single handed, న by which, త by you, ఇద


this, సపద demon's abode, పధ త assailed, త you, నః you are very brave, త you,
సమరః are able, త you, జః are wise.

"O foremost among the vanaras! you have trespassed the abodes of demons all alone. You are mighty and
capable and wise.
శత జన ర గ మక లయః.

కమ ఘ న కమ ష కృతః৷৷5.36.8৷৷

కమ ఘ న by your admirable prowess, కమ advancing, శత జన రః extended over a


hundred yojanas, మక లయః abode of crocodiles, గరః ocean, ష కృతః is reduced to calf's hoof
mark.

"You with your admirable prowess have reduced this ocean which is an abode of crocodiles stretching over a
hundred yojanas to a cow's hoof mark.
న ం కృతం మ నరం నరరభ.

యస స వ స మ మః৷৷5.36.9৷৷

నరరభ O bull among vanaras, యస of whom, to you, వ from Ravana, స సః fear,


not there, స మ మః అ even excitement, న not, for you, కృత ordinary, నర monkey,
నమ I do not think.

"I do not think you are an ordinary monkey. You have no fear or excitement about Ravana. You are a bull
among vanaras.
అర చ క షమ సమ .

యద త న ణ త ৷৷5.36.10৷৷

క ష O best among monkeys, త by a knower of self, న by him, ణ by Rama, తః


sent, అ య you are, మ by me, సమ to converse, అర you deserve.

"O best of monkeys! As you have been sent by Rama, the knower of the self, it is proper for me to converse
with you.
ష ష ర నహ ప త .

ప కమమ య మత శం షతః৷৷5.36.11৷৷

రరః formidable, మః Rama, ప కమ valour, అ య without knowing, అప త without

testing, న ష ష would not send any body, షతః specially, మత శ to me.

"The formidable Rama will not send any one specially to me without testing him or knowing his valour.
చ శ ధ సత సఙరః.

ల ణశ మ ననవరనః৷৷5.36.12৷৷

luckily, ధ righteous, సత సఙరః one who follows truth, మః Rama, మ ః glorious,


ననవరనః enhancer of Sumitra's joy, ల ణశ Lakshmana also, శ well.

"To my luck, righteous Rama who abides in truth and glorious Lakshmana who enhances the joy of Sumitra
are keepng well.
శ య త ః ం గర ఖ .

మ ం దహ న తః৷৷5.36.13৷৷

త ః Kakutsthas, శ య if he is keeping well, ఉ తః generated, వ at the time of


dissolution of the era, గర ఖ ocean-girdled, మ earth, న with his rage, why, న
దహ not burning?

"Indeed if Kakutstha is well wherefore does he not burn the ocean-girdled earth in his rage as (the earth is
burnt) at the time of dissolution of the era?
అథ శ మ మ గ .

మ వ న ః మ మ పర యః৷৷5.36.14৷৷

అథ or else, both, మ even gods, గ in subduing, శ మ both are capable, but,


మమ my, ః వ for my sorrow, పర యః disaster, not there, మ I think.

"Both of them are capable of subduing even the gods. I think the reversal of my fate is reason for their
inaction.
క న వ మః క న ప తప .

ఉత చ తమః৷৷5.36.15৷৷

మః Rama, న వ తః క whether not depressed, న ప తప క indeed not suffering,


తమః great among men, ఉత necessary steps, action, will be carrying out
perhaps?

"Is Rama the greatest among men not depressed? Does he not feel helpless? He is (perhaps) taking necessary
steps (for my recovery).
క న నస నః నచ హ .

క ష నృప తః৷৷5.36.16৷৷

నృప ః తః king's son, నః depressed, స నః perplexed, న క not indeed, at work, న


చ హ is not spoiling, ష the actions of men of achievement, క
surely he is doing I trust

"I suppose prince Rama is not too depressed or perplexed to attend to his work. He will (perhaps) be doing
the duties expected of a manly person.
ధం య యమ వ .

హృత చ పరనపః৷৷5.36.17৷৷

పరనపః scorcher of enemies, ధ two kinds, ఉ య strategies, యమ even three


kinds of trategies, వ following, జ ః he who desires to be victorious, with friends,
హృ క has a good team indeed

"Tell me if Rama, scorcher of enemies, desirous of victory is following a two-fold policy (confrontation and
conciliation) A tough enemy cannot be defeated by following this method. A three-fold strategy has to be
adopted in this case (confrontation, conciliation and creation of dissension among his foes) to be victorious. I
hope he is well-disposed to his friends and has a good team!
క లభ ప గమ .

క త ణ తశ త ౖ రస ృతః৷৷5.36.18৷৷

allies, క లభ hope he will be making, ః with allies, అ అ గమ will want his


friendship, క ణ తశ క hope he has good allies, శ by his allies, అ రస ృతః
honoured

"I hope he is making new friends, who desire his friendship. Hopefully, Rama is well- honoured by his allies.
క ం ప దం త జః.

క ష రం చ వం చ ప పద ৷৷5.36.19৷৷

త జః prince, of gods, ప ద blessings, ఆ క is there any hope,


ష రం చ his personal efforts, వం చ providence, ప పద he obeys

"Does the prince ever seek the blessings of gods or fall back upon personal effort as well as providence?
క న గత హః ప న ఘవః.

క ంవ స ద ష నర৷৷5.36.20৷৷

ఘవః Rama, ప due to separation, మ in me గత హః devoid of love, న క suppose


not, నర vanara, me, అ from this, వ స worry, ష క will liberate me
from this

"I hope Rama is not devoid of love towards me by my separation. O Vanara, hope he will liberate me from
this misery.
త మ మ తః.

ఃఖ తర ద క న ద ৷৷5.36.21৷৷

త always, delight, ఉ తః one who deserves, అ of difficulties, అ తః he


does not deserve, ఘవః Rama, ఉతర later, ఃఖ sorrow, ఆ ద having experienced, న ద

hope, మః Rama, నఅన మ ః he is not absent -minded, న క may be, me, క

"I hope respectable Rama is not too absent-minded for being immersed in sorrow on my account. Hope he
will save me.
క ద ం ం భర తృవత లః.

ధ ంమ ం ష ష మత ృ ৷৷5.36.24৷৷

తృవత లః devoted to brother, భరతః Bharata, మత ృ for my sake, మ ః with his ministers,
protected, formidable, అ ధ akshauhini army, క ష ష I
trust he will send

"Will Bharata, the devoted brother, send his formidable army of one akshavhini protected by ministers for
my cause? I trust he will. (Akshauhini = 109350 foot soldiers + 65610 horse soldiers + 21860 elephants
soldiers on chariot)
న ప వః క ష .

మత ృ హ ర ృ దనన ః৷৷5.36.25৷৷

మత ృ for my sake, illustrious, న ప ః king of vanaras, వః Sugriva,


దనన : those who use their teeth and nails as weapons, ః with valiant ones, హ ః with
vanaras, వృతః surrounded, ఏష క trust he will reach.

"I trust that the illustrious Sugriva surrounded by valiant vanaras who use their teeth and nails as weapons
will reach this place.

city of Lanka of all the demons.

త త there, మస Rama's, ప on his way, అన in between, మృ ః death, స ః including all

"Thereafter, whoever comes Rama's way, be it gods or demons or even death or any one else he will destroy

ఆ O noble lady!, సః మః that Rama, తవ your, అదర న న on account of not seeing you, న in
sorrow, ప తః immersed, ం తః tormented by a lion, పః ఇవ like an elephant, శర న లభ is
not happy.

"O noble lady! not being able to see you, Rama is immersed in an ocean of sorrow, he has no solace like an
elephant tormented by a lion.
మల న చ న మన ణ చ.

ద ణచ శ లఫ న చ৷৷5.36.38৷৷

య నయనం వ షం ణల .

ఖం ద మస రచ న త ৷৷5.36.39৷৷

O Sita, మల న చ by Malaya mountain, న by Vindhya, by Meru, ద ణ by


Dardura, లఫ న by roots and fruits, to you, శ I swear, య as, నయన with beautiful
eyes, వ ష lips like bimba fruit, ణల with lovely ear-rings, ఉ త risen,
రచ న వ like the full-moon, మస Rama's, ఖ face, ద you will see.

"O Sita! I swear in the name of mountains like Malaya, Vindhya, Meru, and Dardura (the abodes of monkeys
and bears) and by the roots and fruits as well (which are the food of vanaras). you will soon behold Rama
with beautiful eyes, red lips like bimba fruit, lovely ear-rings and a countenance resembling the full moon.
పం ద మం ప సవ .

శత క నం గ జస ర ৷৷5.36.40৷৷

Vaidehi, ప సవ on mount Prasravana, మ Rama, గ జస elephant's, ర on


the back, ఆ న seated, శత క ఇవ like Indra who has performed a hundred sacrifices, ప
soon, ద you will see.

"O Vaidehi, you will soon see Rama seated on the Prasravana mountain just as Indra (who performed a
hundred sacrifices) seated on the back of the king of elephants.
న ంసం ఘ ఙ న మ వ .

వన ం తం త ం భకమ పఞ మ ৷৷5.36.41৷৷

ఘవః Rama, ంస meat, న ఙ not eating, మ even wine, న వ he is not taking,


త always, పఞ మ fifth meal, త prescribed for, వన available in the forest, క
food, అ eats.

"Rama is not eating meat, nor drinking wine. He takes only the one fifth of a meal
(sanctioned for an ascetic) available in the forest.
వ దం న మశ న న స సృ .

ఘవః Rama, త ద న thinking of you, అన త with heart, from his limbs, దం flies,
వ అపన will not drive away, మశ mosquitoes, న not, insects, న not, స సృ
serpents, న not.

"Since you left, Rama has been always thinking sincerely of you, no longer drives away flies or mosquitoes
nor insects or serpents from his body (his mind entirely fixed on you).
త ం నప త ం కప యణః.

న నయ త మవశం గతః৷৷5.36.43৷৷

మః Rama, త ever, నపరః reflecting on you, త ever, కప యణః totally given to


grief, సః he, మవశం గతః absorbed in love for you, అన no other thoughts, న నయ he is not
thinking.

"Rama is always lost in thought. He is totally given to grief. Absorbed in love for you, he thinks of none
else৷৷
అ దస తతం మ చ న తమః.

మ ం ం హర న ధ ৷৷5.36.44৷৷

మః Rama, సతత always, అ దః he does not sleep, న తమః best of men, even if he sleeps,
calling out 'Sita', మ sweet, voice, హర uttering, ప ధ he wakes up.

"Rama, the best of men never goes to sleep and even if he drops off to sleep he mutters 'Sita, Sita!' in a sweet
voice in his sleep.
దృ ఫలం ష ం య న మ హర .

బ వం శ సం మ ష ৷৷5.36.45৷৷

ఫలం fruit or, ష ం or flowers, య such similar, మ హర delightful, అన any other


thing, దృ seeing, శ స while, వ alas, darling, you, బ శః in many,
అ ష speaks.

"Sighing deeply whenever Rama sees a fruit or a flower or any such delightful thing, he remembers you and
calls you out again and again, saying, 'alas, my darling !'
స త ం ప తప న వ త ష ణః.

ధృత వ జ మ త వ య కృత పయత ః৷৷5.36.46৷৷

god-like lady, మ great self, సః Rama, జ తః son of a king, త always, ప తప నః


suffering, saying Sita, వ you only, అ ష ణః keeps talking in the air, ధృత వతః firm
in his decision, తవ your, య to secure you only, కృత పయత ః makes efforts.

"O divine lady! prince Rama is ceaselessly suffering. He keeps talking to you in air. The determined Rama is
only thinking of your recovery ".

శర ద షచ వ హ బ వ৷৷5.36.47৷৷

మస Rama's, న because of his sorrow, స న equally sad, మస రన త devoid of


sorrow on hearing about Rama, she, హ the daughter of Videha, శర at the advent of
autumn, ద షచ Moon muffled by clouds, వ like the night, బ వ appeared.

Her sorrow was mitigated by references made by Hanuman about Rama.She felt equally sad when she heard
about Rama's agony. The princess from Videha appeared like a night at the advent of autumn, with the Moon
looking partly muffled by clouds and partly bright.
ఇ మ య యఆ నర ష ంశస రః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtysixth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.

To the righteous words (about Rama's grief) of Hanuman, Sita with a face like the full moon replied :
అమృతం షసంసృషం త నర త .

యచ న మ యచ కప యణః ৷৷5.37.2৷৷

నర O vanara, మః Rama, అన మ ః న not thinking of others, ఇ య that way, ఇ చ య and


this way also (that he is sad), త by you, త spoken, షసంసృష mixed with poison,
అమృత nectar.

"O vanara! you have told me that Rama has his mind always fixed on me, not on others and you have also
said that he is sad. It is like offering me poison mixed with nectar.
ఐశ వ స .

ర వ షం బ కృ నః ప కర ৷৷5.37.3৷৷

కృ నః death, ష a man, ర with a cord, బ ఇవ like tying, in the great, ఐశ


in fortune, deeply sunk, వ స in adversity, ప కర will snatch.

"Death snatches a man tied with a cord, whether he is rolling in luxury or sinking in adversity.
నమసం ర ః ం పవ తమ.

ం ంచ మం చ వ స : పశ ৷৷5.37.4৷৷

పవ తమ O best of vanaras, for living beings, న surely, ః destiny, అసం ర ః it


cannot be overcome, వ స ః with sorrows, afflicted, Saumitri, ం చ me too,

"O best of vanaras! surely it is not possible for living beings to overcome destiny. You see how Sri Rama,
Saumitri, and my own self are all afflicted with grief.

పవ నః ప హత గ య ৷৷5.37.5৷৷

గ in the ocean, హత ః in ship-wreck, పవ నః while getting drowned, ప నః య who has


suffered, ఘవః Rama, అస of this, కస from grief, ర the shore, క when, అ గ ష will
he reach.

"When will Raghava reach the shore of this ocean of grief? He is like a man who has suffered a ship wreck,
trying to swim?
ం వధం కృ ద చ వణ .

ల ం కృ క ద ం ప ః৷৷5.37.6৷৷

ప ః husband, of all the demons, వధ killing, కృ after doing, వణం చ and Ravana,
ద after killing, ల Lanka, ఉ uprooting, కృ after doing, క when
me, ద he will see.

"When will my husband see me after killing the demons including Ravana and uprooting Lanka?
స చ స ంత ర వ వన ర .

అయం సంవత రః ల వ మమ త ৷৷5.37.7৷৷

అయ this, సంవత రః లః one year's time, వ వ until then, న ర before it is completed,


సంత ర you may be quick, సః he, చ ః he should be informed, మమ I, త life, వ till
then only.

"One year's time has been given (by Ravana) to me. Rama should be informed to be quick in reaching before
the completion of the time limit and that I will survive till then only.
వర దశ పవఙమ.

వ న నృశం న సమ యః కృ మమ৷৷5.37.8৷৷

పవఙమ O vanara, నృశం న వ న by the wicked Ravana, మమ to me, యః such, సమయః time,
కృతః given, దశమః tenth, సః month, వర is running, two only, remain.

"O vanara! this is the end of the tenth month. Only two more months are left. This is the condition laid by the
wicked Ravana in my case.
ష నచ మమ తనం ప .

అ తః పయ ననచత మ ৷৷5.37.9৷৷

by the brother, ష న by Vibhisana, మమ my, తనం ప for my restoration,


పయ న made efforts, అ తః he was advised gently, త such, మ thought, న he has

"Vibhisana made efforts to advise Ravana for my restoration. But Ravana has not agreed to that.

వణం ర సం మృ ః లవశం గత ৷৷5.37.10৷৷

into the trap of time, వణ Ravana, సం in a battle, మృ ః death, ర is searching.

"Ravana did not like to return me having fallen into the death trap. Death lies in wait for him in battle.

క O vanara, న Nala, eldest daughter, షణ daughter of Vibhisana, ప త


sent by her mother, త by her, స య personally, ఇద here, మమ to me, ఆ త reported.

"O vanara! Nala the eldest daughter of Vibhisana sent by her mother came here personally and reported this
to me.
అసంశయం హ ష పం ం ప ప ః.

అన చ దస ంశ బహ ః৷৷5.37.12৷৷

హ ష O eminent vanara, ప ః my lord, ప soon, me, అసంశయ no doubt, ప he


will reach, my, అన చ inner self also, దః pure, త ంశ in that, బహవః many, ః are
virtues.

"O eminent vanara! no doubt my lord will soon reach this place. My pure conscience tells me that Rama has
many virtues.
ఉ హః షం సత నృశంస ం కృతజ .

కమశ ప వశ స నర ఘ ৷৷5.37.13৷৷

నరvanara, ఘ in Rama, ఉ హః perseverance, ష manliness, సత prowess,


అనృశంస kindness, కృతజ gratitude, కమశ competence, ప వశ power, స endowed.

"O vanara! Rama is endowed with perseverance, manliness, prowess, kindness, gratitude, competence and
power.
చ రశసహ ం జ న యః.

జన శ ః కస స ৷৷5.37.14৷৷

యః whoever, జన in Janasthana, without his brother also, demons,


చ ర శసహ fourteen thousand, జ న slew, తస his, కః who, శ ః enemy, will not
tremble.

న స శక ల ంవ స ః షరభః.

అహం తస ప వ శక వ మ ৷৷5.37.15৷৷

షరభః bull among men, సః he, వ స ః in calamities, ల shaken, న శక ః not possible,


మ daughter of Puloma, శ క వ just as Indra, అహ I, తస his, ప వ know his might.

"O bull among men! he will not be shaken by calamities. Just as Sachi, the daughter of Puloma knows Indra's
might I know Rama's.
శర ం రః క మ కరః.

శ ర మయం య ప షం న ష ৷৷5.37.16৷৷

క O monkey!, రః valiant, మ కర: Rama the Sun, శర ం with his volley of


dazzling arrows, శ ర మయ enemy forces of the demons, య water, ఉప ష will dry up,
న ష will effect.

"O monkey! the valiant Rama is like the Sun-god shoofing a dazzling volley of arrows which will dry up the
sea of enemy forces."
ఇ స ఞల ం ం కక .

ఆ స రనయ చ వచనం క ః৷৷5.37.17৷৷

ఇ thus, సఞల while she was speaking freely, on account of Rama, కక


emaciated with sorrow, అ స ర నయ her eyes filled with tears, her, క ః vanara,
వచన word, ఉ చ spoke.

While Sita, tormented with grief on account of Rama was thus speaking, her eyes filled with tears, the
monkey said:
వ వ మహ ం ప ష ఘవః.

చ ం పకరన హ ం హర ృ గణస ৷৷5.37.18৷৷

ఘవః Rama, వ after hearing this, వచః word, మహ ం by me, ప soon, ఐష he will
reach, చ ం an army, పకర while leading, మహ ం huge, హర ృ గణస with an army of
vanaras and bears.

"On hearing me Rama will reach soon with a huge army of vanaras and bears.
అథ చ మ వవ న .

అ ః హ మమ పృషమ ৷৷5.37.19৷৷

అథ or, వ న O lady with a beautiful face, you, అ వ now itself, అ from this,
ః from grief, చ I shall redeem you, అ O blameles one, మమ my, పృష
back, ఉ హ you may ascend.

"O beautiful lady, if you please, I shall redeem you today itself from grief. You may ride on my back, O
blameless lady.

along with Ravana.

O Mythili, అనలః sacred fire, త put into fire, హవ oblations, శ య by Indra, అహ


I, ప సవణ య to a person staying on Prasravan mountain, ఘ య to Rama, అ వ ప
I will take you today itself.

"O Mythili! Just as oblations offered to the sacred fire goes to Indra, I shall offer you today to Rama waiting
on the Prasravana mountain.
ద స వ ఘవం సహల ణ .

వ వ యస కం ం త వ య ৷৷5.37.22৷৷

Vaidehi, త వ in the killing of demons, వ వ యస క making all out efforts, ం


య like Visnu, సహల ణ together with Lakshmana, ఘవ Rama, అ వ right now, ద
you will see.

"O Vaidehi! you will see Rama and Lakshmana making all out efforts like Lord Visnu to kill the demons.
త దర నకృ హ శమసం మ బల .

ర నర నం గ జస ర ৷৷5.37.23৷৷

త దర నకృ హ enthused in seeing you, ఆ శమస staying in his asram, మ బల mighty,


గ జస of the king of elephants Airavatam, ర on the back, ఆ న seated, రనర వ like
the destroyer of citadels (Indra).

Mighty Rama staying in asram ill be enthused to see you seated on my back like Lord Purandara (Indra)
seated on the back of the lord of elephants (Airavata)
పృష హ ఙస భ .

గమ చ ణశ వ ৷৷5.37.24৷৷

O god like lady, మమ my, పృష back, ఆ హ climb up, భ O beautiful one, ఙస do
not be reluctant, Rohini, శ వ like joining with the Moon, ణ with Rama, గ
union, అ చ you may become.

"O god like lady! climb up my back. Do not be reluctant. Join Rama just as Rohini unites with the Moon, O
beautiful one!
కథయ వ చ ణ ణచమ .

అఙ O beautiful lady, you, ఇతః from the place, నయతః while carrying, స మ తస joined
together, my, గ speed, అ గ to follow me, స all, ల నః the inhabitants of
Lanka, న శ ః not possible for any one.

"O beautiful lady! it is not possible for all the inhabitants of Lanka together to follow me while I carry you
from this place.
య హ హ పస హమసంశయః.

పశ ద మ యస ৷৷5.37.27৷৷

Vaidehi, య హ హ just as I reached here, పస వ in the same way I reached, అహమ I,


ద మ taking you on my back, will go, యస across the sky, నసంశయః no
doubt, పశ you may see.

"O Vaidehi! just as I reached here I shall beyond doubt take you on my back in the same way across the sky
without any difficulty. See.
హ వచనమ త .

హర తస హ మనమ బ ৷৷5.37.28৷৷

Mythili also, హ from the best of vanaras, అ త wonderful, వచన word,


on hearing, హర తస experienced immense joy in every limb of her body, అథ then,
హ మ న Hanuman, అ బ said.

When Mythili heard the wonderful proposal from Hanuman, the best of vanaras, she experienced immense
joy in every limb of her body and said:
హ మ రమ నం కథం ం చ .

త వఖ మ క త ంహ థప৷৷5.37.29৷৷

హ మ Hanuman, ర distant, అ న path, me, carry, కథ how, ఇచ you


intend, హ థప O leader of vanaras, you, క త monkey nature, త వ ఖ indeed that is,
మ I think.

"Hanuman! how do you intend to carry me to such a distant place? Indeed, it is your monkey nature, I
suppose.
కథం ల శ రస ం చ .

"O bull among monkeys! you have such a small body. How can you intend to carry me from here to my
husband, the lord of men"?
వచనం హ త జః.

న సల న వం ప భవం కృత ৷৷5.37.31৷৷

త జః son of the Wind-god, ల illustrious one, హ Hanuman, ః Sita's,


వచన word, on hearing, నవ new, ప భవ కృత insult hurled, న స he thought.

On hearing Sita's new belittling statement about him, Hanuman, the illustrious son of the Wind-god
reflected:
న సత ం ప వం .

త త శ య పం మమ మతః৷৷5.37.32৷৷

అ black-eyed, Vaidehi, my, సత ం strength, ప వం my power, న she


is not aware, త therefore, మతః freely, మమ my, య that real, ప form, పశ see.

'Black-eyed Sita is not aware of my strength or my power. Therefore let her see the real (huge) form that I
can assume at my free will'.
ఇ స న హ ంస పవగసతమః.

దర స స పమ మరనః৷৷5.37.33৷৷

పవగసతమః the noble monkey, అ మరనః crusher of enemies,హ Hanuman, ఇ in that way,
స న thinking that way, త then, స ప his real form, ః to Vaidehi, దర స he
revealed.

Thinking thus, Hanuman, the noble monkey, crusher of enemies, started revealing his real form to Vaidehi.
సత ద త పవగరభః.

త వ పత య ర ৷৷5.37.34৷৷

wise, పవగరభః bull among monkeys, సః he, త ద from the tree, అ త jumping
down, తతః from there, పత య ర in order to instil confidence in Sita, వ to grow in
size, ఆ started.

The wise bull among monkeys, jumped down from the tree and started growing in size in order to instil
confidence in Sita.
మనరస బ నల పభః.

అగ వ వత చ న తమః৷৷5.37.35৷৷

న తమః foremost among vanaras, మనరస శః like mount Meru or Mandara, నల పభః
glowing like blazing fire, బ appeared, ః Sita's, అ గతః in front, వ వత

Hanuman, the foremost of the vanaras resembling mount Meru or Mandara stood there glowing like blazing
fire in front of Sita.

పర తస శః resembling a mountain, మవ కః one who has a red face, మ బలః very strong,
వ జదం షనఖః teeth and nails as strong as diamonds, మ: dreadful, హ ః vanara, to Vaidehi,

Resembling a mountain in size, with a red face, with teeth and nails strong like diamond, the vanara in
dreadful form said to Vaidehi:
సపర తవ ం ట ర ర .

సపర తవ filled with mountains and gardens, ట ర ర forts, ramparts and


gateways, స along with its king, ఇ this, ల ం Lanka itself, న carried away,
my, శ : capacity, అ is there.

"I have the capacity to carry away this entire Lanka uprooted with its mountains, gardens, forts, ramparts and
gateways along with the king.
తదవ ప ం రలం ఙ .

కం ఘవం సహల ణ ৷৷5.37.38৷৷

queen, త so, with unworthy attitude, అల enough, : intellect, అవ ప be


stable, Vaidehi, సహల ణ with Lakshmana, ఘవ Rama, క rid of sorrow, do.

"O queen! it is enough. Give up this unworthy attitude. Be stable. O Vaidehi, rid Lakshmana and Rama of
grief".
తం దృ మస శ చ జన త .

పద ప త త రసం త ৷৷5.37.39৷৷

పద ప త with eyes large like lotus petals, జన daughter of Janaka, మస శ dreadful


to viewers, తస Maruta's, ఔరసం త own son, త him, దృ on seeing, ఉ చ said.

Seeing the son of Maruta in dreadful form, the broad lotus petal-eyed daughter of Janaka with eyes as large
as lotus petals replied :
తవ సత ం బలం వ మ క .

మ క O great monkey, తవ your, సత strength, బలం వ and power, వ like the Wind-

"O chief of vanaras! how could an ordinary person be capable of reaching this land on far off shore of the
immeasurable ocean?

అవశ ం స మ ర ర త నః৷৷5.37.42৷৷

గమ in making the journey, మమ me, నయ in taking, శ power, I know, మ త నః of the


great soul, ర ద success of the mission, అవశ surely, ఆ immediately, స మ after
planning properly

"I know you are capable of carrying me on your journey. I am sure about the quick success of your mission
which has been carried out after careful planning.
అ కం క ష మమ గ ం త నఘ.

గస గస ం హ తవ৷৷5.37.43৷৷

అనఘ sinless one, క ష foremost monkey, త by you, మమ my, గ to go with, అ క


not proper, గస గస of a person with the speed of the wind, తవ your, గః speed, me,
హ will render me unconscious.

"O sinless and foremost monkey! going with you is not proper for me. Your wind-like speed will render me
unconscious.
అహ శ ప ప ప గర .

పప యం పృ ద వ గచ తః৷৷5.37.44৷৷

గర ఉప ప above the ocean, ఆ శ sky, అహ I, న speedily, గచ తః when you go,


your, పృ from the back, భ out of fear, ఆప when I reach, పప య I may tumble down.

"When you fly over the ocean in the sky speedily I may tumble down from your back by your speed out of
fear.
ప గ హం న కఝ .

భ య వ ద మన తమ ৷৷5.37.45৷৷

న కఝ filled with whales, crocodiles and fish, గ in the ocean, ప fallen in, అహ I,

శ శన O destroyer of foes, త ర along with you, గ to go, న శ చ I have no


power, కల తవ when burdened with a woman, త య with you also, సం హః doubt, may be,
అసంశయః there is no doubt.

"O destroyer of foes, it is not possible for me to go with you. Further, when you are burdened with a woman
you will also fall into danger (because of me), no doubt.
య ం ం దృ మ క ః.

అ గ వ న త ৷৷5.37.47৷৷

య while I am, me, దృ after seeing, మ క ః of fearsome valour, ః


demons, త by evil-minded, వ న by Ravana, ఆ ః ordered, అ గ ః they will
pursue

"When I am seen (while being carried away) by the demons of fearsome valour they will pursue you, ordered
by the wicked Ravana.
స ం ప వృత ల దర ః.

భ స ం సంశయం మ ర కల త ৷৷5.37.48৷৷

త you, ల దర ః by those wielding spears and mace, ః by them, ః by warriors,


ప వృతః surrounded, ర O hero, మ by me, కల త one who has a wife, త you, సంశయ
doubt, ప ః have been, భ ః you.

"O heroic monkey! as the warriors armed with spears and maces surround you and attack, your life will be in
danger, because of me.
బహ స ం ధః.

కథం శ సం ం ం వప ర ৷৷5.37.49৷৷

in the sky, ః will be armed with weapons, ః demons, బహవః many, త you,
ధః unarmed, సం to fight, me, ప ర ం చ and safeguard, కథ how, శ
you will be capable?

"The demons are in large number and they will be armed with weapons. You are unarmed. How can you
fight and protect me?
ధ నస ర సవ ః రకర ః.

పప యం పృ ద క సతమ৷৷5.37.50৷৷

క సతమ O noble monkey, తవ your, రకర ః by those of wicked deeds, ః by them, ర ః by the
demons, ధ నస for you while engaged in fighting, భ out of fear, your, పృ from the
back, పప యం I will drop down.

"O noble monkey! while you are engaged in fighting with those demons of wicked deeds, I may drop down
out of fear.
అథ ర ం మ బలవ చ.

కథ ంప ంజ ః క సతమ৷৷5.37.51৷৷

క సతమ O noble monkey, అథ then, fearsome, మ massive, బలవ చ powerful, ర ం


demons, ంప in the fight, కథ in any case, you, జ ః win over.

"O noble monkey! the massive, fearsome and powerful demons may defeat you in the fight in any way.
అథ ధ నస ప యం ఖస .

ప ం చ గృ ంన ః ప ః৷৷5.37.52৷৷

అథ or else, ధ నస for you while engaged in the fighting, for you, ఖస while you
turn your attention other way, ప య I may fall down, ప when I have fallen down, me,
గృ taking hold, ప ః wretched rakshasas, న ః may take me away.

"Or else, while you are engaged in fighting and turn your attention the other way I might fall down and the
sinful ogres may bear me away.
ం హ స ద శ ర .

అవ వ దృ జయప జ ৷৷5.37.53৷৷

త హ from your hand, me, హ ః they may take one away, అ or rather,
శ ః may cut me, in the fight, జయప జ success or failure, అవ వ not sure,
దృ they appear.

"They may snatch me away from your hands or cut me to pieces. Success or defeat is uncertain in a war.
అహం ప యం ర ర త .

త త య హ షభ ష ల ఏవ ৷৷5.37.54৷৷

ర ః caught by the ogres, అ త very much threatened, అహ I, ప యం or else I


may die, హ ష best of monkeys, త త యత ః your effort, ష ల ఏవ will be wasteful, indeed,
భ may be.

"In such a case, caught and intimidated by the demons I may die. Then your efforts will be wasted.
మం త మ ప హ ం సర .

ఘవస య త శ ౖ ః৷৷5.37.55৷৷

త you, సర all the ogres, హ to slay, ప పః అ మ it may be you can do the


task, త by you, శ ౖ by those killed, ః by demons, ఘవస Rama's, యశః fame,
will diminish.

"It may be that you can kill all the demons but by such an act the fame of Rama will be diminished. (He
cannot give his strength a trial)
అథ యర ం న స మ ృ .

అథ or else, ర ం the ogres, me, ఆ య after taking, య త where, హరయః those of you
vanaras, ఘ అ and even Rama and Lakshmana, ః may not know, సంవృ in a secret
place, న : they may hide.

"Or else, the ogres will carry me and conceal me in a secret place which the vanaras or Rama and Lakshmana
may not know.
ఆరమ మద యం తతసవ రరకః.

త సహ మస మ గమ ణః৷৷5.37.57৷৷

తతః then, మదరః for my sake, తవ your, ఆరమ effort, రరకః futile, త సహ along with you,
మస Rama, ఆగమ coming here, మ great, ణః merit.

మ త యతం ఘవస మ త నః.

ంచమ తవ జ లస చ৷৷5.37.58৷৷

మ strong-armed one, మ త నః of the great self, ఘవస Rama's, of his


brothers, తవ your, జ లస of the relatives of your king, త life, మ in me, ఆయత is
dependent.

"O strong-armed Hanuman! your life and the life of the great self Rama, of his brother, and relatives of your
king is dependent upon my survival.
మదరం కస పక .

సహ సర రహ స తః ణస ఙహ ৷৷5.37.59৷৷

మదర for my sake, కస పక emaciated with sorrow and suffering, they both, with
no hope of finding me, సర హ ర ః సహ along with all vanaras and bears, ఙ
ణస హ the five
elements of which life is made, త తః will give up.

"Both Rama and Lakshmana who are emaciated with sorrow and suffering on account of me will give up
their lives along with vanaras and bears.
భ ర ం రస ృత దన స నర.

నస ృ శ రం ం నర ఙవ৷৷5.37.60৷৷

నర ఙవ O chief of vanaras, నర vanara, భ ః husband's, భ devotion, రస ృత after

"O chief of vanaras! I cherish my devotion towards Rama alone and not touch the body of any other man.

"I had no control over myself. I was helpless and my husband was not present when I had to bear the touch
of Ravana's limbs. What can I do?
య దశ వ హ హ స నవ .

గృహ గ త తతస సదృశం భ ৷৷5.37.62৷৷

మః Rama, స నవ along with his relations, దశ వ Ravana, ఇహ here, హ after killing,


me, ఇతః from here, గృహ taking, గ త య and if he goes, త then, తస his, సదృశ
proper, భ it will be.

"It will be proper if Rama comes here, kills Ravana along with all his relations and takes me away.
దృ శ మ ప క మ త నసస ర వమ నః.

న వగనర జఙ భవ ణస సం ৷৷5.37.63৷৷

ర వమ నః of the crusher of enemies, మ త నః great self, తస his, ప క ః valiant deeds, మ


by me, ః heard, దృ శ witnessed, సం in war, వగనర జఙ ః whether gods,
gandharvas, nagas or demons, ణ by Rama, స ః equal, న not indeed.

"I have seen and heard about Rama's conquest of enemies and his valiant deeds in war. Indeed, gods
gandharvas, nagas or even demons cannot match him in war.
స తం సంయ త క మ బలం సవ ల కమ .

సల ణం ష త ఘవం శనం ప త ৷৷5.37.64৷৷

త క wielder of a powerful bow, మ బల endowed with great strength,


సవ ల కమ equal to Vasava in valour, సల ణ along with Lakshmana, అ త
whipped by wind, ప blazing, శన వ like the fire, తం ఘవ him, Rama, సయ in war,
స facing, కః who, ష తః can withstand.

సల ణం ఘవ మరనం గజం మత వవ వ త .

స త నర ఖ సం న ర ప మం శ ష ৷৷5.37.65৷৷

నర ఖ chief of vanaras, సల ణ with Lakshmana, ఆ మరన crusher of enemies in war,


మత intoxicated, గజ వ like the elephant supporting quarter of the earth, వ వ త steady,
శ ష arrows of rays, న ర ప మ resembling the Sun at the at the time of the deluge,
ఘవ Rama, సం in a war, కః who, స త can withstand.

"O chief of vanaras! who can withstand Rama accompanied by Lakshmana, the conqueror of enemies? His
arrows resemble the rays of the Sun at the time of the deluge, steady like the elephants who support the
quarters of the earth.
స హ ష సల ణం ప ం స థపం ప ప దయ.

హ ష O foremost of the vanaras, సః he, సల ణ with Lakshmana, స థప along with army


troops, ప lord, ప quick, ఇహ here, ఉప దయ bring, నర ఖ chief of vanaras, మం
ప with Rama, య for a long time, కక emaciated with suffering, me, హ a
happy lady, ష you may make.

"O foremost of the vanaras! get Rama here along with Lakshmana and the lord of vanara troops quickly. O
chief of vanaras! this way you can bring happiness to one like me who is emaciated with suffering on
account of Rama.
ఇ మ య యఆ నర సప ంశస రః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.
[Hanuman offers to carry Sita back to Rama-Sita politely Sita declines -- appeals to Hanuman to get Rama to
take her.]

తద చనం రచ న న .

హ మన దం ధ రస తం వచః৷৷5.37.1৷৷

రచ న న face like the full moon, Sita, తద చన that word, having heard,
హ మన Hanuman, ఇద this, ధ రస త full of righteousness, వచః word, ఉ చ spoke.

To the righteous words (about Rama's grief) of Hanuman, Sita with a face like the full moon replied :
అమృతం షసంసృషం త నర త .

యచ న మ యచ కప యణః ৷৷5.37.2৷৷

నర O vanara, మః Rama, అన మ ః న not thinking of others, ఇ య that way, ఇ చ య and


this way also (that he is sad), త by you, త spoken, షసంసృష mixed with poison,
అమృత nectar.

"O vanara! you have told me that Rama has his mind always fixed on me, not on others and you have also
said that he is sad. It is like offering me poison mixed with nectar.
ఐశ వ స .

ర వ షం బ కృ నః ప కర ৷৷5.37.3৷৷

కృ నః death, ష a man, ర with a cord, బ ఇవ like tying, in the great, ఐశ


in fortune, deeply sunk, వ స in adversity, ప కర will snatch.

"Death snatches a man tied with a cord, whether he is rolling in luxury or sinking in adversity.
నమసం ర ః ం పవ తమ.

ం ంచ మం చ వ స : పశ ৷৷5.37.4৷৷

పవ తమ O best of vanaras, for living beings, న surely, ః destiny, అసం ర ః it


cannot be overcome, వ స ః with sorrows, afflicted, Saumitri, ం చ me too,
మం చ Rama also, పశ you see.

"O best of vanaras! surely it is not possible for living beings to overcome destiny. You see how Sri Rama,
Saumitri, and my own self are all afflicted with grief.
క స క రం ఘ గ ష .

పవ నః ప హత గ య ৷৷5.37.5৷৷

గ in the ocean, హత ః in ship-wreck, పవ నః while getting drowned, ప నః య who has


suffered, ఘవః Rama, అస of this, కస from grief, ర the shore, క when, అ గ ష will
he reach.

"When will Raghava reach the shore of this ocean of grief? He is like a man who has suffered a ship wreck,
trying to swim?
ం వధం కృ ద చ వణ .

ల ం కృ క ద ం ప ః৷৷5.37.6৷৷

ప ః husband, of all the demons, వధ killing, కృ after doing, వణం చ and Ravana,
ద after killing, ల Lanka, ఉ uprooting, కృ after doing, క when
me, ద he will see.

"When will my husband see me after killing the demons including Ravana and uprooting Lanka?
స చ స ంత ర వ వన ర .

అయం సంవత రః ల వ మమ త ৷৷5.37.7৷৷

అయ this, సంవత రః లః one year's time, వ వ until then, న ర before it is completed,


సంత ర you may be quick, సః he, చ ః he should be informed, మమ I, త life, వ till
then only.

"One year's time has been given (by Ravana) to me. Rama should be informed to be quick in reaching before
the completion of the time limit and that I will survive till then only.
వర దశ పవఙమ.

వ న నృశం న సమ యః కృ మమ৷৷5.37.8৷৷

పవఙమ O vanara, నృశం న వ న by the wicked Ravana, మమ to me, యః such, సమయః time,
కృతః given, దశమః tenth, సః month, వర is running, two only, remain.

"O vanara! this is the end of the tenth month. Only two more months are left. This is the condition laid by the
wicked Ravana in my case.
ష నచ మమ తనం ప .

అ తః పయ ననచత మ ৷৷5.37.9৷৷

by the brother, ష న by Vibhisana, మమ my, తనం ప for my restoration,


పయ న made efforts, అ తః he was advised gently, త such, మ thought, న he has
not agreed.

"Vibhisana made efforts to advise Ravana for my restoration. But Ravana has not agreed to that.

"Ravana did not like to return me having fallen into the death trap. Death lies in wait for him in battle.

క O vanara, న Nala, eldest daughter, షణ daughter of Vibhisana, ప త


sent by her mother, త by her, స య personally, ఇద here, మమ to me, ఆ త reported.

"O vanara! Nala the eldest daughter of Vibhisana sent by her mother came here personally and reported this
to me.
అసంశయం హ ష పం ం ప ప ః.

అన చ దస ంశ బహ ః৷৷5.37.12৷৷

హ ష O eminent vanara, ప ః my lord, ప soon, me, అసంశయ no doubt, ప he


will reach, my, అన చ inner self also, దః pure, త ంశ in that, బహవః many, ః are
virtues.

"O eminent vanara! no doubt my lord will soon reach this place. My pure conscience tells me that Rama has
many virtues.
ఉ హః షం సత నృశంస ం కృతజ .

కమశ ప వశ స నర ఘ ৷৷5.37.13৷৷

నరvanara, ఘ in Rama, ఉ హః perseverance, ష manliness, సత prowess,


అనృశంస kindness, కృతజ gratitude, కమశ competence, ప వశ power, స endowed.

"O vanara! Rama is endowed with perseverance, manliness, prowess, kindness, gratitude, competence and
power.
చ రశసహ ం జ న యః.

జన శ ః కస స ৷৷5.37.14৷৷

యః whoever, జన in Janasthana, without his brother also, demons,


చ రశసహ fourteen thousand, జ న slew, తస his, కః who, శ ః enemy, will not
tremble.

న స శక ల ంవ స ః షరభః.

అహం తస ప వ శక వ మ ৷৷5.37.15৷৷

"O bull among men! he will not be shaken by calamities. Just as Sachi, the daughter of Puloma knows Indra's
might I know Rama's.
శర ం రః క మ కరః.

శ ర మయం య ప షం న ష ৷৷5.37.16৷৷

క O monkey!, రః valiant, మ కర: Rama the Sun, శర ం with his volley of


dazzling arrows, శ ర మయ enemy forces of the demons, య water, ఉప ష will dry up,
న ష will effect.

"O monkey! the valiant Rama is like the Sun-god shoofing a dazzling volley of arrows which will dry up the
sea of enemy forces."
ఇ స ఞల ం ం కక .

ఆ స రనయ చ వచనం క ః৷৷5.37.17৷৷

ఇ thus, సఞల while she was speaking freely, on account of Rama, కక


emaciated with sorrow, అ స రనయ her eyes filled with tears, her, క ః vanara,
వచన word, ఉ చ spoke.

While Sita, tormented with grief on account of Rama was thus speaking, her eyes filled with tears, the
monkey said:
వ వ మహ ం ప ష ఘవః.

చ ం పకరన హ ం హర ృ గణస ৷৷5.37.18৷৷

ఘవః Rama, వ after hearing this, వచః word, మహ ం by me, ప soon, ఐష he will
reach, చ ం an army, పకర while leading, మహ ం huge, హర ృ గణస with an army of
vanaras and bears.

"On hearing me Rama will reach soon with a huge army of vanaras and bears.
అథ చ మ వవ న .

అ ః హ మమ పృషమ ৷৷5.37.19৷৷

అథ or, వ న O lady with a beautiful face, you, అ వ now itself, అ from this,
ః from grief, చ I shall redeem you, అ O blameles one, మమ my, పృష
back, ఉ హ you may ascend.

"O beautiful lady, if you please, I shall redeem you today itself from grief. You may ride on my back, O
blameless lady.

Vaidehi, త వ in the killing of demons, వ వ యస క making all out efforts, ం


య like Visnu, సహల ణ together with Lakshmana, ఘవ Rama, అ వ right now, ద
you will see.

"O Vaidehi! you will see Rama and Lakshmana making all out efforts like Lord Visnu to kill the demons.
త దర నకృ హ శమసం మ బల .

ర నర నం గ జస ర ৷৷5.37.23৷৷

త దర నకృ హ enthused in seeing you, ఆ శమస staying in his asram, మ బల mighty,


గ జస of the king of elephants Airavatam, ర on the back, ఆ న seated, రనర వ like
the destroyer of citadels (Indra).

Mighty Rama staying in asram ill be enthused to see you seated on my back like Lord Purandara (Indra)
seated on the back of the lord of elephants (Airavata)
పృష హ ఙస భ .

గమ చ ణశ వ ৷৷5.37.24৷৷

O god like lady, మమ my, పృష back, ఆ హ climb up, భ O beautiful one, ఙస do
not be reluctant, Rohini, శ వ like joining with the Moon, ణ with Rama, గ
union, అ చ you may become.

"O god like lady! climb up my back. Do not be reluctant. Join Rama just as Rohini unites with the Moon, O
beautiful one!
కథయ వ చ ణ ణచమ .

మత ృషమ హ త ంత శమ ర ৷৷5.37.25৷৷

"O beautiful lady! it is not possible for all the inhabitants of Lanka together to follow me while I carry you
from this place.

పశ ద మ యస ৷৷5.37.27৷৷

Vaidehi, య హ హ just as I reached here, పస వ in the same way I reached, అహమ I,


ద మ taking you on my back, will go, యస across the sky, నసంశయః no
doubt, పశ you may see.

"O Vaidehi! just as I reached here I shall beyond doubt take you on my back in the same way across the sky
without any difficulty. See.
హ వచనమ త .

హర తస హ మనమ బ ৷৷5.37.28৷৷

Mythili also, హ from the best of vanaras, అ త wonderful, వచన word,


on hearing, హర తస experienced immense joy in every limb of her body, అథ then,
హ మన Hanuman, అ బ said.

When Mythili heard the wonderful proposal from Hanuman, the best of vanaras, she experienced immense
joy in every limb of her body and said:
హ మ రమ నం కథం ం చ .

త వఖ మ క త ంహ థప৷৷5.37.29৷৷

హ మ Hanuman, ర distant, అ న path, me, carry, కథ how, ఇచ you


intend, హ థప O leader of vanaras, you, క త monkey nature, త వ ఖ indeed that is,
మ I think.

"Hanuman! how do you intend to carry me to such a distant place? Indeed, it is your monkey nature, I
suppose.
కథం ల శ రస ం చ .

"O bull among monkeys! you have such a small body. How can you intend to carry me from here to my

త జః son of the Wind-god, ల illustrious one, హ Hanuman, ః Sita's,


వచన word, on hearing, నవ new, ప భవ కృత insult hurled, న స he thought.

On hearing Sita's new belittling statement about him, Hanuman, the illustrious son of the Wind-god
reflected:
న సత ం ప వం .

త త శ య పం మమ మతః৷৷5.37.32৷৷

అ black-eyed, Vaidehi, my, సత ం strength, ప వం my power, న she


is not aware, త therefore, మతః freely, మమ my, య that real, ప form, పశ see.

'Black-eyed Sita is not aware of my strength or my power. Therefore let her see the real (huge) form that I
can assume at my free will'.
ఇ స న హ ంస పవగసతమః.

దర స స పమ మరనః৷৷5.37.33৷৷

పవగసతమః the noble monkey, అ మరనః crusher of enemies,హ Hanuman, ఇ in that way,
స న thinking that way, త then, స ప his real form, ః to Vaidehi, దర స he
revealed.

Thinking thus, Hanuman, the noble monkey, crusher of enemies, started revealing his real form to Vaidehi.
సత ద త పవగరభః.

త వ పత య ర ৷৷5.37.34৷৷

wise, పవగరభః bull among monkeys, సః he, త ద from the tree, అ త jumping
down, తతః from there, పత య ర in order to instil confidence in Sita, వ to grow in
size, ఆ started.

The wise bull among monkeys, jumped down from the tree and started growing in size in order to instil
confidence in Sita.
మనరస బ నల పభః.

అగ వ వత చ న తమః৷৷5.37.35৷৷

న తమః foremost among vanaras, మనరస శః like mount Meru or Mandara, నల పభః
glowing like blazing fire, బ appeared, ః Sita's, అ గతః in front, వ వత

ల ంస ం న ంశ ర ৷৷5.37.37৷৷

సపర తవ filled with mountains and gardens, ట ర ర forts, ramparts and


gateways, స along with its king, ఇ this, ల ం Lanka itself, న carried away,
my, శ : capacity, అ is there.

"I have the capacity to carry away this entire Lanka uprooted with its mountains, gardens, forts, ramparts and
gateways along with the king.
తదవ ప ం రలం ఙ .

కం ఘవం సహల ణ ৷৷5.37.38৷৷

queen, త so, with unworthy attitude, అల enough, : intellect, అవ ప be


stable, Vaidehi, సహల ణ with Lakshmana, ఘవ Rama, క rid of sorrow, do.

"O queen! it is enough. Give up this unworthy attitude. Be stable. O Vaidehi, rid Lakshmana and Rama of
grief".
తం దృ మస శ చ జన త .

పద ప త త రసం త ৷৷5.37.39৷৷

పద ప త with eyes large like lotus petals, జన daughter of Janaka, మస శ dreadful


to viewers, తస Maruta's, ఔరసం త own son, త him, దృ on seeing, ఉ చ said.

Seeing the son of Maruta in dreadful form, the broad lotus petal-eyed daughter of Janaka with eyes as large
as lotus petals replied :
తవ సత ం బలం వ మ క .

వగ ం వ జ త ৷৷5.37.40৷৷

మ క O great monkey, తవ your, సత strength, బలం వ and power, వ like the Wind-
god's, గ speed, ఆ వ like fire's, అ త astonishing, జశ splendour, I have
understood

"O great monkey! I have understood your strength and power. Your speed is like the Wind-god's and your
power is astonishing and splendid.
కృ న ః కథం ం గ మర .

ఉద ర ప యస రం నర ఙవ৷৷5.37.41৷৷

నర ఙవ O chief of vanaras, కృతః an ordinary one, అన ః other, అ ప యస of an immeasurable


one, ఉద ః ocean's, ర far off shore, ఇ this, this land, ఆగ reach, కథ how,
అ ర fit.

"O chief of vanaras! how could an ordinary person be capable of reaching this land on far off shore of the
immeasurable ocean?
గమ శ ం నయ మమ.

అవశ ం స మ ర ర త నః৷৷5.37.42৷৷

గమ in making the journey, మమ me, నయ in taking, శ power, I know, మ త నః of the


great soul, ర ద success of the mission, అవశ surely, ఆ immediately, స మ after
planning properly

"I know you are capable of carrying me on your journey. I am sure about the quick success of your mission
which has been carried out after careful planning.
అ కం క ష మమ గ ం త నఘ.

గస గస ం హ తవ৷৷5.37.43৷৷

అనఘ sinless one, క ష foremost monkey, త by you, మమ my, గ to go with, అ క


not proper, గస గస of a person with the speed of the wind, తవ your, గః speed, me,
హ will render me unconscious.

"O sinless and foremost monkey! going with you is not proper for me. Your wind-like speed will render me
unconscious.
అహ శ ప ప ప గర .

పప యం పృ ద వ గచ తః৷৷5.37.44৷৷

గర ఉప ప above the ocean, ఆ శ sky, అహ I, న speedily, గచ తః when you go,


your, పృ from the back, భ out of fear, ఆప when I reach, పప య I may tumble down.

"When you fly over the ocean in the sky speedily I may tumble down from your back by your speed out of
fear.
ప గ హం న కఝ .

భ య వ ద మన తమ ৷৷5.37.45৷৷

న కఝ filled with whales, crocodiles and fish, గ in the ocean, ప fallen in, అహ I,
వ helpless, ఆ immediately, ద of aquatic animals, ఉతమ very good, అన food,
భ య I will be.

నచశ త రం గ ంశ శన.

కల తవ స హస య దసంశయః৷৷5.37.46৷৷

శ శన O destroyer of foes, త ర along with you, గ to go, న శ చ I have no


power, కల తవ when burdened with a woman, త య with you also, సం హః doubt, may be,
అసంశయః there is no doubt.

"O destroyer of foes, it is not possible for me to go with you. Further, when you are burdened with a woman
you will also fall into danger (because of me), no doubt.
య ం ం దృ మ క ః.

అ గ వ న త ৷৷5.37.47৷৷

య while I am, me, దృ after seeing, మ క ః of fearsome valour, ః


demons, త by evil-minded, వ న by Ravana, ఆ ః ordered, అ గ ః they will
pursue

"When I am seen (while being carried away) by the demons of fearsome valour they will pursue you, ordered
by the wicked Ravana.
స ం ప వృత ల దర ః.

భ స ం సంశయం మ ర కల త ৷৷5.37.48৷৷

త you, ల దర ః by those wielding spears and mace, ః by them, ః by warriors,


ప వృతః surrounded, ర O hero, మ by me, కల త one who has a wife, త you, సంశయ
doubt, పః have been, భ ః you.

"O heroic monkey! as the warriors armed with spears and maces surround you and attack, your life will be in
danger, because of me.
బహ స ం ధః.

కథం శ సం ం ం వప ర ৷৷5.37.49৷৷

in the sky, ః will be armed with weapons, ః demons, బహవః many, త you,
ధః unarmed, సం to fight, me, ప ర ం చ and safeguard, కథ how, శ
you will be capable?

"The demons are in large number and they will be armed with weapons. You are unarmed. How can you
fight and protect me?
ధ నస ర సవ ః రకర ః.

పప యం పృ ద క సతమ৷৷5.37.50৷৷

క సతమ O noble monkey, తవ your, రకర ః by those of wicked deeds, ః by them, ర ః by the
demons, ధ నస for you while engaged in fighting, భ out of fear, your, పృ from the
back, పప యం I will drop down.

"O noble monkey! while you are engaged in fighting with those demons of wicked deeds, I may drop down

out of fear.
అథ ర ం మ బలవ చ.

కథ ంప ంజ ః క సతమ৷৷5.37.51৷৷

క సతమ O noble monkey, అథ then, fearsome, మ massive, బలవ చ powerful, ర ం


demons, ంప in the fight, కథ in any case, you, జ ః win over.

"O noble monkey! the massive, fearsome and powerful demons may defeat you in the fight in any way.
అథ ధ నస ప యం ఖస .

ప ం చ గృ ంన ః ప ః৷৷5.37.52৷৷

అథ or else, ధ నస for you while engaged in the fighting, for you, ఖస while you
turn your attention other way, ప య I may fall down, ప when I have fallen down, me,
గృ taking hold, ప ః wretched rakshasas, న ః may take me away.

"Or else, while you are engaged in fighting and turn your attention the other way I might fall down and the
sinful ogres may bear me away.
ం హ స ద శ ర .

అవ వ దృ జయప జ ৷৷5.37.53৷৷

త హ from your hand, me, హ ః they may take one away, అ or rather,
శ ః may cut me, in the fight, జయప జ success or failure, అవ వ not sure,
దృ they appear.

"They may snatch me away from your hands or cut me to pieces. Success or defeat is uncertain in a war.
అహం ప యం ర ర త .

త త య హ షభ ష ల ఏవ ৷৷5.37.54৷৷

ర ః caught by the ogres, అ త very much threatened, అహ I, ప యం or else I


may die, హ ష best of monkeys, త త యత ః your effort, ష ల ఏవ will be wasteful, indeed,
భ may be.

"In such a case, caught and intimidated by the demons I may die. Then your efforts will be wasted.
మం త మ ప హ ం సర .

ఘవస య త శ ౖ ః৷৷5.37.55৷৷

త you, సర all the ogres, హ to slay, ప పః అ మ it may be you can do the


task, త by you, శ ౖ by those killed, ః by demons, ఘవస Rama's, యశః fame,
will diminish.

"It may be that you can kill all the demons but by such an act the fame of Rama will be diminished. (He
cannot give his strength a trial)
అథ యర ం న స మ ృ .

యత రర ఘ ৷৷5.37.56৷৷

అథ or else, ర ం the ogres, me, ఆ య after taking, య త where, హరయః those of you
vanaras, ఘ అ and even Rama and Lakshmana, ః may not know, సంవృ in a secret
place, న : they may hide.

"Or else, the ogres will carry me and conceal me in a secret place which the vanaras or Rama and Lakshmana
may not know.
ఆరమ మద యం తతసవ రరకః.

త సహ మస మ గమ ణః৷৷5.37.57৷৷

తతః then, మదరః for my sake, తవ your, ఆరమ effort, రరకః futile, త సహ along with you,
మస Rama, ఆగమ coming here, మ great, ణః merit.

మ త యతం ఘవస మ త నః.

ంచమ తవ జ లస చ৷৷5.37.58৷৷

మ strong-armed one, మ త నః of the great self, ఘవస Rama's, of his


brothers, తవ your, జ లస of the relatives of your king, త life, మ in me, ఆయత is
dependent.

"O strong-armed Hanuman! your life and the life of the great self Rama, of his brother, and relatives of your
king is dependent upon my survival.
మదరం కస పక .

సహ సర రహ స తః ణస ఙహ ৷৷5.37.59৷৷

మదర for my sake, కస పక emaciated with sorrow and suffering, they both, with
no hope of finding me, సర రహ ః సహ along with all vanaras and bears, ణస ఙహ the five
elements of which life is made, త తః will give up.

"Both Rama and Lakshmana who are emaciated with sorrow and suffering on account of me will give up
their lives along with vanaras and bears.
భ ర ం రస ృత దన స నర.

నస ృ శ రం ం నర ఙవ৷৷5.37.60৷৷

నర ఙవ O chief of vanaras, నర vanara, భ ః husband's, భ devotion, రస ృత after


cherishing, from Rama, అన స other, ంసః man's, శ రం body, న స ృ I do not touch.

"O chief of vanaras! I cherish my devotion towards Rama alone and not touch the body of any other man.
యదహం తసంస ర ం వణస బ ద .

అ ంక వ స ৷৷5.37.61৷৷

అహ I, బ by force, వణస Ravana's, తసంస ర touch of his body, గ య that I had

to experience, అ having no control over my self, వ స a helpless woman, without my


husband, ం క what can I do?

"I had no control over myself. I was helpless and my husband was not present when I had to bear the touch
of Ravana's limbs. What can I do?
య దశ వ హ హ స నవ .

గృహ గ త తతస సదృశం భ ৷৷5.37.62৷৷

మః Rama, స నవ along with his relations, దశ వ Ravana, ఇహ here, హ after killing,


me, ఇతః from here, గృహ taking, గ త య and if he goes, త then, తస his, సదృశ
proper, భ it will be.

"It will be proper if Rama comes here, kills Ravana along with all his relations and takes me away.
దృ శ మ ప క మ త నసస ర వమ నః.

న వగనర జఙ భవ ణస సం ৷৷5.37.63৷৷

ర వమ నః of the crusher of enemies, మ త నః great self, తస his, ప క ః valiant deeds, మ


by me, ః heard, దృ శ witnessed, సం in war, వగనర జఙ ః whether gods,
gandharvas, nagas or demons, ణ by Rama, స ః equal, న not indeed.

"I have seen and heard about Rama's conquest of enemies and his valiant deeds in war. Indeed, gods
gandharvas, nagas or even demons cannot match him in war.
స తం సంయ త క మ బలం సవ ల కమ .

సల ణం ష త ఘవం శనం ప త ৷৷5.37.64৷৷

త క wielder of a powerful bow, మ బల endowed with great strength,


సవ ల కమ equal to Vasava in valour, సల ణ along with Lakshmana, అ త
whipped by wind, ప blazing, శన వ like the fire, తం ఘవ him, Rama, సయ in war,
స facing, కః who, ష తః can withstand.

సల ణం ఘవ మరనం గజం మత వవ వ త .

స త నర ఖ సం న ర ప మం శ ష ৷৷5.37.65৷৷

నర ఖ chief of vanaras, సల ణ with Lakshmana, ఆ మరన crusher of enemies in war,


మత intoxicated, గజ వ like the elephant supporting quarter of the earth, వ వ త steady,
శ ష arrows of rays, న ర ప మ resembling the Sun at the at the time of the deluge,
ఘవ Rama, సం in a war, కః who, స త can withstand.

"O chief of vanaras! who can withstand Rama accompanied by Lakshmana, the conqueror of enemies? His
arrows resemble the rays of the Sun at the time of the deluge, steady like the elephants who support the
quarters of the earth.
స హ ష సల ణం ప ం స థపం ప ప దయ.

య మం ప కక ం ష ం నర ఖ హ ৷৷5.37.66৷৷

హ ష O foremost of the vanaras, సః he, సల ణ with Lakshmana, స థప along with army


troops, ప lord, ప quick, ఇహ here, ఉప దయ bring, నర ఖ chief of vanaras, మం
ప with Rama, య for a long time, కక emaciated with suffering, me, హ a
happy lady, ష you may make.

"O foremost of the vanaras! get Rama here along with Lakshmana and the lord of vanara troops quickly. O
chief of vanaras! this way you can bring happiness to one like me who is emaciated with suffering on
account of Rama.
ఇ మ య యఆ నర సప ంశస రః৷৷
Thus ends the thirtyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.
