EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Social media is a platform was built for all people around the world to use. Usually, we throw
a phrase a lot and frequently describe what we post on sites and apps like Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram , Snapchat, and others. Based on Daniel Nations article, the social media are web-
based communication tools that enable people to interact with each other by both sharing and
consuming information.
In background, we describe each of the applications individually like when was it created and
the advantages. For example, Instagram platfrorm is a picture and video-sharing social
networking services owned by Facebook Inc. The advantages of the application which is to
allow users to upload photo and videos to the service. We also give the statistic and
differentiate between the research on 2016 and 2017.
Everything that we do there is no way that we would not make any mistake and the same
applies to these applications. There is a few problem that we can found like getting addicted
to social media, having a fake identity, health issues, diminishes of understanding and
thoughtfulness, cyber bullying and procrastination. To emphasize, these problems should be
solved as soon as possible by the authorities.
In our research we collect the data using primary data which is we target the teenagers to
complete our questionnaire that in rage between 17 until 19 years old. By using this method,
we receive 172 respondents for the questionnaire that we made.
From our findings, we find that majority of the respondents agreed that social media was
helpful in their life but there is also 20% from the respondents disagree about that because it
brings harm for the time being because it could make people get addicted to it. We also get
the percentage of usage by the teenagers is high which is we could say that teenagers spend
time more on social media.
In conclusion, we can conclude that social media is more helpful than harmful. It shows that
teenagers could think rationally and carefully to used the social media wisely. Sometimes,
people can make mistakes because human cannot not run from doing it.
We recommend that social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp , Snapchat,
Telegram and wechat should update the system of the applications to make a limit time for
every log in by the authorities to ensure the usage of social media in daily life.We also
recommended to lighten the security of the user’s privacy. Parents play the roles to monitor
their own children. Last but not least, the individuals themselves also should beware of what
they going to post on any social media platform to ensure their safety.

2
BACKGROUND OF THE TOPIC

Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and
sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual
communities and networks. Social refers to instinctual needs humans have to connect with
other humans. Meanwhile, media means what we use to make connection with other humans.

According to Pop Culture Universe, "Social media is an umbrella term that refers to all online
communities or publications that foster and encourage conversation between users and allow
them to develop, critique, publish, and interact with a vast array of online content."
There are some examples of social media that people nowadays frequently used, such as

4
PROBLEMS

First and foremost, getting addicted to social media is the addictive part of the social
media it is very bad and can disturb personal life as well the teenagers are the most affected
by the addiction of the social media. They get involved directly and are eventually cut off
from the society. It can also waste of individual time that could have been used by useful
tasks and activities such as do assignments. This thing will happen when you feel
disconnected from family and even from your friends. It could be because teenagers feels like
a misfit or that does not conform to the way that others friends or people who are around
behave or think. It could cause your teen to feel confused or frustated and the only place
where they can be their own self without feeling out of place is the social media.
Social media also can caused health issues because. The excess usage of social media have
a negative impact on the health. It is because when we always spend time to social media we
will get not enough sleep. Having enough sleep is of paramount importance. Getting worked
up with anxiety or envy from what we see on social media keeps the brain on high alert,
preventing us from falling asleep. Plus the light from the mobile mobile device just inches
from the face can suppress the release of melatonin which is hormone that helps us to feel
tired. This research by discovery will shock you by showing how bad your health can be
affected by the use of social media.
Next, is diminishes understanding and thoughtfullness since the inception of social
networking, the quality of of conversations has dropped, we be lieve that people who are sp
ending so much online that they don’t always understand the feeling, emotion and character
of the person they are talking to. When you talk to someone through a message or even a
voice, you cant always fully understand them. Social networking has ruined the
thoughtfullness in basically saying hello in person. For instance, you could say hello to your
friend in abroad with Whatsapp chat in seconds but what if there was no way to communicate
via social networking ? Well you would have to write them a letter and that is something
which is very thoughtful.
Additionally, fake identity also happen when people started creating fake profile using
images of infamous celebrities or others on social media and dating websites. There’s this
show on MTV called “Catfish” where they exposed those who’s not using they true identity
on internet. After researching the person to see if they are the real deal, the hosts of the show
then will contact them to met up with the person they have been talking to online. More often
than not ,the person has a completely different appearance than they put out onto the internet
and they might even have a different name. Other than that, some people create fake profile
to get information online about others. They create fake profile of facebook to stalk someone
and gain information about those people.
Cyberbullying is a huge problem that we witness every single day on social media where
the anonymity that social networks provide can be used by the perpetrators to gain peoples
trust and then terrorize them in front of their peers. These online attacks often leave deep

5
mental scars and even drive people suicide in some cases. These apps on social media make
bullying more easy and seductive for teens because it promising them anonymity. On the
contrary, sarahah is a new app for cyberbullying where you can comment annonymously on
people if you know their link. Sarahah is a simillar app called Sayat.Me, which was shut
down when they found out that app is being used for cyberbullying. You’ll be surprised to
find out that cyberbullying isn’t just affecting kids but also full grown adults.
Last but not least, promotes procrastination this one probably comes as no surprise but
social media leads you to academic procrastination and everyone knows about this but they
just blew it away and pretend it didn’t affect their academic work at all. For some people, it is
hard to resist the daily scroll on instagram especially when most of your work is completed
online. Being online while doing your assignment is difficult because you are surrounded by
tempting sites on the internet. Three hours later, we are doing our homeworks the next thing
we know we are on social media checking all the non-important notifications and chats while
our works are still incomplete yet we still decided to procrastinate it by promising ourselves
to get it done tomorrow or the next day.

6
METHOD OF COLLECTING DATA

The method of collecting data that we use is primary data which we are targetting the
teenagers to complete our questionnaire that are all in range of 17 to 19 years old.
Primary data is the method of creating questionnaire that needed to distribute to respondent
for them to complete it. Those survey answers helped a lot in this research that can give us
the final answer and achieving our objective in this report which is to decreasing the usage of
social medias in a group of teenagers because media today has a huge influence and impacts
on them where they more easily got distracted by this sides of social media.
The questionnaire we asked about was their frequency of spending their time to social media
in one day and how many social media that they used currently. Other than that there is also a
question about their opinions wether social media is helpful or harmful in any ways and they
can state their own reasons for it. From their responds we also can conclude wether social
media brings more harms or benefits.
These questionnaire have been distributed to these teenagers for them to complete it in two
days which resulted in a total of 172 respondents.
As soon as they submit their responds, we analyzed it using a pie chart and bar graph to show
percentages and results of each applications that we put in those questionnaire based on their
answers.
The sample of the questionnaire can be found at the appendices.

Figure 3. Social media platforms that respondents have

From the chart, we conclude that Whatsapp is the highest rank which have 168 votes.
Majority of the teenagers use Whatsapp as their platform to communicate with others as this
platform is the most common application in our country, Malaysia and it is an easy
application that lot of people already get used to.
While the lowest percentage of teenagers vote as their platform is Wechat which have only
21 votes out of 172 respondents. This might probably because people been assuming that this
application is used by the ones who is considered low class and mainly because only China is
the country that uses WeChat as their main platform of communicating.

Spending Time
The pie chart beside shows that most of
1.4
teenagers always spent more time on social
27 media. This can affect their time management
such as lack of sleep. While teenagers that
spent their time on social media once a day is
only 4 people. This showed that they just
open their social media just enough to keep
update on what is happening in the world
which means they are not interested to waste
their time on social medias.

Figure 5. Respondent’s opinion about social media

20% of the respondents votes for social media is harmful for them. The respondents also
known as teenagers mostly said that they get addicted to social media to the point they get
distracted with it and eventually procrastinate their works such as assignment. Other than
that, they also said social media can be the reason of teenagers nowadays being introvert and
lack of communication skills, They tend to feel awkward being around lot of people and just
focusing on their phone. Some of them also said that, social media is harmful because users
like to share rumors and news to social media platform such as WhatsApp without knowing
the news is true or not. Lots of people can get wrong information by that.
Meanwhile, we conclude that social media is helpful for teenagers since our respondents
votes the most for helpful which is 80%. Some of their reasons were social media is where
we can communicate with others easily and conveniently. From this, we can also get to know
new friends from Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. These kind of social media helps people
to socialize with people around the world and importantly can learn about their culture. Next,
they said that social media helps a lot for their studies especially to find additional
information for their assignments. Nowadays it is easier to find information on social media
instead of going to the libraries and search for books. Other than that, social media helps
teenagers in keeping updates towards the current issues of this world since they spent most of
their time on social media. These current issues also can be known in just a short time since
the power of viral is unbeatable. Last but least, our respondents said that social media is
helpful because they can know some life hacks such as how to peel pineapple in a correct

10
way or what we need to do when our shirt become loose. These hacks helped a lot in the
concept of do it yourself without needing to spend our money.
The respondent’s answers can be find at appendices.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on our research, we recommend that the creator of these social medias such as
Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, Telegram, Snapchat and Wechat should update the
system of the applications to make a limit time for every log in. If the user exceed from the
limit time that have been fixed, it will automatically closed and could not be used by the user
for the rest of the day. It is to ensure that the users would not spend a lot of time on social
medias that can cause decreasing in their productivity.
Next, we recommend that the authorities to tighten the security of the user’s privacy such as
the passwords and number phones. This is important as people nowadays knows hacking to
the point they know about someone’s privacy life which is creepy.
Other than that, parents play the roles to monitor their children once they started using social
medias. This is important for the parents to stay alert of what their children is up to like they
might share something shameful or privacy things in the social medias.
Last but not least, the individuals themselves should beware of what they are going to post on
any social media’s platforms as they can harm themselves later on like any kidnappers can
target them by just searching them on the location that they post on any social media.

11
CONCLUSIONS
Based on our suvey questionnaire, we find that most of the teenagers agreed that social media
is helpful instead of harmful. Social media can bring a lot of benefit from any aspects
including being the main platform of communicating to one and another. This helps
especially when two person being away from each other but still can keep in contact using
applications like Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook and Wechat.
Other than that, the era that we lived in right now is modern in technology whereby people do
not really go out and buy for newspapers. People nowadays prefer to search for articles to
keep up with the current news.
Next, social media plays the role of people around the world comunicating with each other
without being to travel or feeling trapped in your own country. Socializing with other people
around the world is the key of certain country have a good diplomatic.
Besides, most teenagers agree of social media being helpful is that the information in it is
endless like the moment they search for certain topic, they can find a lot of information on
which that can helped them for their assignment. Instead of searching for books in any
libraries, it is much easier to just search any reference in e-book.
Lastly, we conclude that social media can bring so many benefits in our daily life especially
in this report, teenagers. In order to not misused of social media, the teenagers themselves
need to restrain themselves and to always aware of what might happened once they share
something into the social media.
