a. Wind setup due to maximum wind speed h

* Formula:
2
V D
h = 2.10-6 gH cosS (m) (2-3)
In which: V – maximum wind velocity (m/s); D – fetch (m); g – gravitational velocity (m/s2); H –
water depth in front of dam (m); s – angle between the primary wind direction and the normal of dam
alignment.
b. Wind climb-up.
According to TCVN 8421-2010, the wind climb-up with frequency of 1% calculated as:
hsl1% = K1 . K2 . K3 . K4 . K. hs1% (2-4)
In which: hs1% - wave height with frequency 1%;
K1, K2, K3, K4 , K - the dependent coefficients.
* hs1% determined in TCVN 8421-2010:
- Assume the wave propagation in shoaling water regions:

(H > 0,5 λ ) (2-5)

gt gD
- Calculate the dimensionless terms: V , V 2 , in which t – the continuous wind blowing
(sec). When it is lacked of data, t = 6 hours (for reservoirs).
- According to the graph, based on the top curve in P2-1 determine the dimensionless terms:

An earthfill dam with upstream slope steepness m=3 is raising up 20m water head at the upstream. The wind
direction is 100 with respect to the normal dam axis. Wave fetch is 3km and the wind velocity v = 19m/s, the
wind is continuously blowing for 6 hours.
1. Calculate the wave height at 1% frequency
2. Determine the wave climb-up height given the slope is rip-rap stone protected with the roughness
=3cm1
3. Estimate the dam crest elevation given the NWL = 145 msl and grade III
