Subject: Engineering and Marketing Department Salary Comparison

As per your instructions about short report on Engineering and Marketing department salary
differences, data about salaries, experiences and education has been obtained. According to data pulled
from employee, Engineering Department is getting 20% extra median salary than Marketing
Department. Table below gives the salary difference between Engineering and Marketing department.

Salary range $58k-$165k $45k-$85k
Median salary $77k $62k

However, if we analyze the statistical profiles of Engineering department and Marketing department, we
can clearly see that Engineering department has far more experienced employees than Marketing
department. They have been with the company for longer time. Also the promotion prospect of
Engineering department is slower than Marketing department. Statistics observed are shown in
graphical format as below

In the personal interviews of departmental heads, both have agreed that there should be roughly same
salary scale for both departments. However, engineering head had made the point that there must be
special allowances for special nature of engineering profession.
Engineering head has made the point that there are several reasons for having high salaries. Difficulties
to find and retain top engineers, limited promotion opportunities, and advance degrees and continuous
ongoing education requirement are the reasons for this. “If there is anything to cap or reduce
engineering salaries, we’ll lose key people to competition”, he added.

Marketing head has also made a point that without market, the product is not delivered to customers.
So both are the main pillars and they should be rewarded equally. He suggested that if we can’t raise the
salaries immediately, we can do it gradually with freezing raises in engineering salaries.

In my opinion there is a balance in salaries of Engineering and Marketing department if other factors are
considered as well. However, to improve the morale of Marketing department can be raised with
lowering the promotion time more.

According to the recent trends, advancements have been observed in redecorating, remodeling, and
rebuilding. Huge market opportunities have been observed in these fields which can benefit our
magazine as well. There is some initial research conducted and following results were found. Below are
the results observed in the surveys conducted.

Observations:-

(i) Trend shows clearly that there is a huge potential in partial remodeling of kitchen, bedroom,
home office and bathrooms. People tend to seek more information about renovation of
their homes. This provide an opportunity to design our magazine according to people
requirement and include remodeling articles and advertisement of firms that deals in such
activities.
(ii) Most of people are looking to get painting, tile work, finish carpentry, plumbing, framing,
demolition and conceptual design work at their own. However, they would constantly keep
on looking latest trends in the market. They would also like to have knowledge about such
works. This provides us with an opportunity to capture new readers if we provide them with
their required stuff.
(iii) People look to get electrical, heating/cooling, technical design and interior design work from
outside firms. This provides the opportunity to grow our terms with such companies and
provide them linkage with the people requiring such services.
(iv) More research can bring about enormous beneficial factors to our knowledge which can
provide us big benefits for our magazine. Deep understanding about customer needs and
wants about re-décor can bring about business for our magazine
Conclusion:-
The latest trends and opportunities must be catered properly to gain profits for our magazine. Board
should allocate funds for more research on the said topic and how maximum benefits can be
obtained from it.
