Daily Learning Assignment : Teaching Material & Practice Activity

Name of Sub. Teacher : Suman Lata Tewari Email Id/ WhatsApp No :

sumanlatatewari@gmail.com/9452820232
Brief Learning Points (Objectives) : Real numbers, H.C.F,L.C.M, Rational and Irrational numbers
PART ‘A’ : Main Points of Teacher's Teaching, with Examples (where ever required) : -
Date: 15.04.2020. Class X. SUB: MATHS

EUCLID's Division Lemma : It tells us about divisibility of integers . Euclid division Lemma states that
any positive integer 'a' can be divided by any other positive integer 'b' in such a way that it leaves a
remainder 'r' that is smaller than b
a = b q + r , where 0< r < b.
(You must have remembered that after doing division, you used to verify it by using formula Dividend
= Divisor * Quotient + Remainder , so here the bigger no 'a' is dividend, it has to be divided by smaller
number 'b'. Then we get some quotient 'q' and remainder 'r'. The remainder 'r' will be always less
then the divisor b or can be 'zero'.

*A).For finding the HCF of two numbers, divide one by other (bigger by smaller)
2. If remainder is not Zero, then Remainder becomes Divisor & the first divisor 'b' comes to dividend's
place, again do division. Go on like this, till you get zero as Remainder. Then the last Divisor will be
HCF (Highest common factor).

Ex : Find HCF of 117 and 45 by Euclid Division Lemma

*1.So, in the first step ,we divide by 117 by 45 ,we get quotient 2 & remainder 27(not 0)
117 = 45 * 2 + 27. ( a = b q + r)

2. Continue the division , Now 27 becomes Divisor and 45 comes at Dividend's position, quotient is 1
& remainder is 18.
45 = 27 * 1 + 18.
3. Again continue it, 18 is divisor & 27 is dividend now, quotient is 1 & remainder = 9
27 = 18 * 1 + 9
4. Still remainder is not Zero, so 9 becomes divisor & 18 comes to dividends place, now quotient is 2
and remainder is Zero. So the last divisor 9 will be the H C F.
18 = 9 * 2 + 0
HCF =9

B) HCF of two numbers can also be found by looking at their prime factors. The product of all common
factors gives HCF. ( Multiplication of minimum powers of common factors.

C) LCM is multiplication of all the factors of given two numbers with only highest powers of common
factors.
Ex. Find HCF and LCM of 90 & 144 by prime factorisation method
Solution: 90= 2*3*3*5. &. 144 = 2*2*2*2*3*3
HCF = 2 * 3 * 3 = 18 ( multiplication of least powers of common factors).
LCM = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 3 * 5 = 720 (multiplication of all factors with highest powers of common
factors)
D) We have one more result , for two numbers a and b, it can also be used for finding HCF & LCM
HCF*LCM=a*b
E) FUNDAMENTAL Theorem of Arithmetic : Every composite number can be expressed (factories) as a
product of primes and this factorisation is unique.

teacher)
Answer the questions given below:
1. Find the HCF and LCM of (a) 26 & 91 (b) 210 & 55

2. The HCF of two numbers is 16 and their product is 3072 . Find their LCM

3. Express 140 as product of its prime factors.

4. The HCF and LCM of two numbers are 6 and 180 respectively .If one of the numbers is 30, find the other
number.

5. On a morning walk ,three persons step out together and their steps measure 30 cm, 36 cm and 40 cm
respectively . What is the minimum distance each should walk so that each can cover the same distance in
complete steps. (Hint:. LCM)

6. In a seminar ,the number of participants in Hindi, English and Mathematics are 60, 84 and 108 respectively.
Find the minimum number of rooms required if in each room the same number of participants are to be seated
and all of them being in the same subject. ( HCF)
