Alternate Method:
Let a, b and c be the rates or speeds of doing work for A, B and C respectively. The first step
is to calculate the LCM of all the “times” given in the question ie 3 hrs and 3.5 hrs. The LCM is
21. Let us now assume the total work to be 21 units (this assumption will not make any diff in
the final answer).
Now, A, B and C working together take 3 hrs to finish 21 units. Therefore the total rate of
working when they work together = Total work/total time taken = 21/3 = 7 units/hr.
In other words, a +b + c = 7. Now, in the first 1 hr, all three work together. Thus they will
complete 7 units in that 1 hr.
Hence, remaining work units = 21-7 = 14. These 14 units are completed by A and B in 3.5
hrs. Thus, total rate of working for A and B together = a + b = Work units/ time taken =
14/3.5 = 4 units/hr.
From this, we get c = 7 – 4 = 3 units/hr.
