Portfolio Core Competency (CC) Worksheet

Directions: Read the core competence description and component behaviors, then identify elements from field that
reflect the CC and complete a written description of the element and the rationale for how the element reflects the CC.

Competency 4: Engage In Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice

Social workers understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and their respective roles in advancing a science of social
work and in evaluating their practice. Social workers know the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and culturally informed and
ethical approaches to building knowledge. Social workers understand that evidence that informs practice derives from multi-
disciplinary sources and multiple ways of knowing. They also understand the processes for translating research findings into effective
practice.
Social workers: (Component behaviors (CB))
a. use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research;
b. apply critical thinking to engage in analysis of quantitative and qualitative research methods and research findings; and
c. use and translate research evidence to inform and improve practice, policy, and service delivery.

Element Name Link to the above CB(s) and explain the Picture
rationale. Meaning, how does this element
demonstrate competence?

Power Point c. use and translate research evidence to Power Point on Cultural Sensitivity
presentation on inform and improve practice, policy, and (See attached below)
cultural sensitivity service delivery. (Counsel on Social Work
Education, 2015)

This artifact reflects my ability to use and

translate research evidence to inform and
improve practice, policy, and service delivery
by showing how I was able to recognize a
concern, conduct research to provide
different methods of how to prevent and
promote better practice at the agency, and
deliver to the intended group. In the NASW
Code of Ethics it states that, "Social workers
should critically examine and keep current
with emerging knowledge relevant to social
work and fully use evaluation and research
evidence in their professional practice."
(National Association of Social Workers Code
of Ethics, 2019) Based on this statement, I
would say that this artifact exemplifies my
ability to evaluate, and utilize research in
order to improve practice and service
delivery.
Notes from SEL a. use practice experience and theory to
Group Research inform scientific inquiry and research;
(Counsel on Social Work Education, 2015)

This artifact reflects the ability to use practice

experience and theory to inform research
because I was able to use previous knowledge
and experience in working with groups to
target areas of research I should focus on, as
well as do more in depth research on models
that I had already used before. In the NASW
Code of Ethics it states that," Social workers
should promote and facilitate evaluation and
research to contribute to the development of
knowledge." (National Association of Social
Workers Code of Ethics, 2019) Based on this
information I believe that that artifact is a
prime example of using practice experience to
inform research.
