Aquesta equació, té una representació gràfica que és la corba de valoració d'un àcid. Cal destacar l'aplanament de la
corba en els dos costats del punt mitjà de la titulació. És una regió que abasteix aproximadament una unitat de pH per
damunt i per davall d'eixe punt mitjà, les adicions d'alcali o base produeixen relativament variació del pH cap als
extrems de la corba. Açò implica que la capacitat esmorteidora del sistema tampó format es major en eixa regió i que
depén del valor de la relació [sal]/[àcid]. El rang dintre del qual el sistema és efectiu va des de el valor 1/10 fins 10/1 en
la relació [sal]/[àcid] i la seua capacitat és màxima quan el quocient és igual a 1 (pH=pKa). Aplicant aquest valors a
l'equació d'Henderson-Hasselbalch:

Com conclusió, podem afirmar que un buffer o tampó té major capacitat d'esmorteir dintre d'un rang
de pH compres entre ±1+pka del sistema.
La capacitat d'un sistema esmorteidor per aturar els canvis de pH produïts en el medi per l'adició
d'àcids o de bases, és màxima quan el pH del tampó es igual a la pKa de l'àcid feble que els
constitueix.
El tampó fosfat: principal tampó intracel·lular
Es tracta el principal tampó en el medi intracel·lular a pH fisiològic ja que la seua pKa2=7,2 es molt
propera aquest valor; és un tampó tancat. El pH intracel·lular de la majoria de les cèl·lules es manté
en un rang de valors que va de 6,9 a 7,4.

* La membrana plasmàtica de la cèl·lula es pot considerar que actua com una membrana semipermeable, i
per això les cèl·lules dels organismes pluricel·lulars han d’estar en equilibri osmòtic amb els líquids tissulars
que les banyen.
Quan la concentració de soluts dels fluids extracel·lulars és igual a la concentració de intracel·lular, totes
dues solucions són isotòniques (o isosmòtiques).
* Si els líquids extracel·lulars augmenten la seua concentració, es fan hipertònics (o hiperosmòtics) respecte
de les cèl·lules, i com a conseqüència les cèl·lules perden aigua, es deshidraten i moren. Aquest procés
s’anomena plasmòlisi i en el cas especial dels eritròcits s’anomena crenació.
* Si els líquids extracel·lulars es dilueixen, es fan hipotònics (hiposmòtics) respecte de les cèl·lules, l’aigua
tendeix a passar al protoplasma interior i les cèl·lules s’inflen, es posen turgents i arriben fins i tot a esclatar,

✓ Diàlisi
Si el diàmetre dels porus de la membrana semipermeable és suficientment gran per deixar passar, a més del
dissolvent, molècules de solut de pes molecular baix, es produeix un fenomen anomenat diàlisi, pel qual les
petites molècules dialitzables passen travessant la membrana des de la solució més concentrada a la més
diluïda.
És una tècnica de separació basada en el pas de molècules a través d’una membrana semipermeable. Les
molècules de mida inferior al porus, passen a través de la membrana, mentre que les de mida superior
queden retingudes perquè no poden atravessar la membrana.
També ens serveix per treure la sal que ens hagi quedat unida a la proteïna que volem purificar. Hi ha sacs
de diàlisi amb microporus (dins: la mostra de proteïna+sal+tampó).
Posem els sacs dins un recipient ple de solució sense sal. Per la pressió osmòtica la sal tendirà a sortir dels
foradets del sac per a equilibrar la concentració de sal.

Aquesta tècnica permet separar en una solució els soluts de baix pes molecular i és el fonament de l’hemodiàlisi,
que s’aplica als malalts d’insuficiència renal i consisteix en el procés següent: es fa passar la sang per un
circuit que conté una solució diluïda separada mitjançant una membrana semipermeable; a través d’ella
passen a la solució components de la sang de pes molecular baix (aigua, sals, urea, etc.) que, d’aquesta
manera queda desproveïda de substàncies tòxiques, residuals del metabolisme; però, abans de tornar-la a
introduir al malalt se li ha de reincorporar determinats components que s’havien filtrar i resulten
imprescindibles, com ara l’aigua, sals minerals, glucosa. aminoàcids, etc.
✓ Ultrafiltració
A partir de la diàlisi com a mètode per separar en una solució els soluts de pes molecular baix, es pot
accelerar el procés amb l’aplicació d’una pressió per damunt o fent el buit per sota la membrana, tal i com
s’indica en l’esquema. Aquesta tècnica de separació rep el nom d’ultrafiltració.

oceans és de 0,1 unitats de pH més baix que en qualsevol altre moment dels últims 420.000 anys.
Estudis recents prediuen que caurà unes 0,3-0,5 unitats el pH pel final d'aquest segle.
Com aigua de mar acidifica, els ions d'hidrogen addicionals es combinen amb els ions de carbonat
(CO32- ) per formar ions de bicarbonat (HCO3-), reduint així la concentració de carbonat.
Un escull de corall saludable com en (a) dóna suport a una gran biodiversitat i té poca
semblança amb els esculls de corall danyats com en (c).
PER QUÈ ÉS IMPORTANT La desaparició dels ecosistemes d'esculls de corall seria una tràgica
pèrdua de la diversitat biològica. A més, els esculls de coral proporcionen protecció costanera,
una zona d'alimentació per a moltes espècies pesqueres comercials, i una atracció turística
popular, les comunitats humanes costaneres així patirien una gran onada de danys, les
pesqueries col·lapsades, i el turisme disminuït.

QUÈ PASSA SI? Explica que pasaria si reduir la concentració de carbonat dels oceans no
tinguera cap efecte, ni tan sols indirectament, sobre els organismes que no formen estructures
esquelètiques de CaCO3.
La crema de combustibles fòssils és també una font important d'òxids de sofre i òxids de nitrogen.
Aquests compostos reaccionen amb el vapor d’aigua en l'aire per formar àcids forts, que cauen a la
Terra amb la pluja o la neu. La pluja àcida es refereix a la pluja, neu o boira amb un pH menor
(més àcid) de 5,2. (Pluja no contaminada té un pH d'aproximadament 5,6, que és lleugerament àcid
a causa de la formació d'àcid carbònic a partir de CO2 i aigua.) La precipitació àcida pot danyar la
vida en llacs i rius, i afecta negativament a les plantes en terra, canviant la química del sòl. Per fer
front a aquest problema, el Congrés dels EUA va modificar la Llei d'Aire Net el 1990, i les millores
obligatòries en tecnologies industrials que en gran part responsable de la millora de la salut de la
majoria dels llacs d'Amèrica del Nord i els boscos.
Si hi ha alguna raó per ser optimistes sobre la futura qualitat dels recursos hídrics del nostre
planeta, és que hem avançat en l'aprenentatge sobre els equilibris químics delicats en els oceans,
llacs i rius. El progrés continu només pot venir de les accions dels individus informats, com vostès,
que estan preocupats per la qualitat del medi ambient. Per això és necessari comprensió del paper
crucial que exerceix l'aigua en l'adequació de l'entorn per a la continuació de la vida a la Terra.
