It was at dawn when you felt the peace of the world, just by looking out through your window,
watching the moon go to sleep as the sun prepared to shine and wake up everyone. With your
morning cup of coffee you sip everything through as you were mesmerized by the stunning view.
It would feel more enjoyable with someone in company, all you’d need is more coffee. Come,
Let’s bean and brew!
Coffee has been sought to be one of the most important beverages in the world, with an
estimated 3 billion cups consumed every day yet the numbers continue to go up. Every year on
October 1, we celebrate the International Coffee Day recognizing everyone involved in the
coffee community – farmers, to roasters, baristas, to everyone who consumes this beverage and
others. It’s for everyone to promote and appreciate coffee more. Of course, we have a collective
identity of all sorts of coffee. It can be an espresso, a latte, cappuccino, flat white or café
macchiato, it doesn’t matter what type it is as long as it brings delight for our early morning
grind.
FROM BEAN TO CUP
You wouldn’t expect it to move for itself and serve you. It’s a journey when it comes to making
coffee, you need to have that right mix. From picking, washing, drying, grading, roasting,
cupping and of course, enjoying. Coffee continues to win the hearts of people. Whatever the
reason maybe, it helps us stay awake throughout the day. In fact, coffee may boost longevity,
causing us to be more productive. Aside from this there are more we can get from just a cup of
coffee.
Brain on, Caffeine
It contains caffeine which is an active stimulant of the central nervous system. When it reaches
the brain, the most noticeable effect is alertness. You’ll feel your energy get boosted and less
tired. After drinking coffee, the caffeine is absorbed in the blood stream. From there, it travels to
the brain where it blocks the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine which causes a stimulant
effect. A lot of studies on humans show that coffee improves different aspects of brain function
including mood, memory, vigilance, energy level and general mental functions. Coffee appears
to lower the risk of developing depression and may dramatically reduce suicide risk. In a Harvard
study published in 2011, women who drank 4 or more cups of coffee per day had a 20% lower
risk of becoming depressed.
It doesn’t just affect our mental health but also our physical health. Several studies have proven
that caffeine can increase fat burning and boost your metabolic rate. It can drastically improve
your physical performance and stimulate the nervous system signaling fat cells to break down in
the body making free fatty acids available as fuel.
A single cup of coffee contains :
Riboflavin (vitamin B2): 11% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI).
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5): 6% of the RDI.
