Sir Kingford Mweso Topic 1:: Trigonometric Equation
The trigonometric function sine, cosine and tangent of the angle were originally defined as ratio
of the sides of a right angled triangle. For the domain 0∘ ≤ θ ≤90∘ . We now extend the definition
to deal with any angle (the general angles) for the domain 0∘ ≤ θ ≤360∘. To solve trigonometric
equations you have to use a calculator.
BASIC TRIGONOMETRIC equations will usually have two solutions for 0∘ ≤ θ 360∘ .
To solve a basic equation, such as cos θ= |k| you have to apply the following steps
1. Find the basic angle alpha(α ) for which sin of sin α= |k|, cos α= |k|and tan α= |k|
2. Identify all the possible quadrant in which θ lies.
3. Use the formula in that selected quadrant to determine the corresponding angles of θ .
Note that: unless exact angles in degrees are rounded off correct to one decimal place.
