Wamego High School

Teacher/Conductor: Elaine Snowden

Rehearsal: 4
Dusk by Steven Bryant
Prior Knowledge/Skills:
Experience with instrument in a band setting, most from the fifth grade. Experience reading sheet
music and performing with the range and technical skills of the program’s high school band.
There have also been previous rehearsals on this piece.
Rehearsal Objective:
Students will perform measures 42-66 with an understanding of climax spots following tension
and release in the music. Students will then use this understanding to appropriately control their
dynamics and tone. Students will also perform these measures with accurate counting from start
to finish.
Assessment of the Rehearsal:
Aural observations by the director(s) and verbal confirmation from the ensemble through
discussion between the director and ensemble.
Relevant Context Factors:
Ensemble struggles to focus on counting beats in a measure, this is apparent throughout changes
in time signatures. They understand building tension towards the point of release in music but
can work on accuracy in entrances and exits.
Modifications/Accommodations needed:
The tempo can be played with during rehearsal depending on if students are struggling with
counting, with hearing harmonic context, or reaching climactic points.
Instructional materials, resources, & technology:
Metronome
Personal Improvement Objective:
Clear conducting with a focus on change in time signatures, releases, and cuing entrances.
Director can also explain the importance of the emotion behind the music.
