General
The basic setting of the injection pump and the function of the injection timing adjuster is checked by using measuring instrument
8190.

Two sensors are included with the instrument:

Sensor 1 is firmly screwed to the flywheel casing and senses the position of the flywheel when the piston in no. 1 cylinder passes
T.D.C.

Sensor 2 is firmly attached to the injection pump and senses in the equivalent way the position of the pump camshaft at the start of
the injection cycle on no. 1 cylinder.

Through these two sensors, the instrument receives the impulses that are required to show the engine speed and injection angle.

Before connecting up, read the operating instructions for the instrument.

The hole in the flywheel casing for the sensor (1) is placed either at the front or underneath the casing, depending on engine type.

The attachment hole for the injection pump sensor (2) is placed in the governor housing.

On TD73, special tool 8230 is used to attach the sensor (2) to the injection pump front wall when checking the function of the
injection timing adjuster.

The measuring instrument can be used with both a 12-volt system and a 24-volt system and is connected either to the cigarette
lighter socket on the truck instrument panel or via an adapter directly to the battery/batteries.

Alt. 1 (does not apply to vehicles fitted with KOBLAM, automatic gearbox, or twin plates)
1

Clean the flywheel casing and remove the plug in the hole for the sensor (the hole is situated either in the front or underneath the
casing).

Carefully screw in the sensor by hand until the probe on the sensor reaches the flywheel. Then unscrew the sensor 11/2-2 turns and
lock it in place with the lock nut.

Note: Care must be observed when screwing in the sensor so that it is not damaged against the flywheel.

Note: It is important that the sensor is unscrewed 11/2-2 turns after the probe has made contact with the flywheel to ensure that the
impulses to the measuring instrument be correct.

Alt. 2 (applies to vehicles fitted with KOBLAM, automatic gearbox, or twin plates)

Clean the flywheel casing and remove the plug. (The hole is situated either in the front or underneath the casing.)

Remove the inspection cover on the flywheel casing and fit cranking tool 6956.

Crank the flywheel round until a pin is visible in the hole for the measuring instrument sensor (zero position on the flywheel).

Note: On trucks fitted with a twin clutch plate, the pin is replaced by a setting indicator.

Special tools: 9996956

Remove the cranking tool and re-fit the inspection cover. Carefully screw in the sensor by hand until the probe on the sensor
reaches the pin.

Then unscrew the sensor two turns and lock it with the lock nut.

Note: There is a risk for damage to the sensor and pin if the position of the sensor probe is adjusted in relation to the flywheel
instead of the pin on the flywheel.

Connect adapter 9812323 between the sensor and the cable for measuring instrument 8190.

Attaching the sensor to the injection pump (sensor 2)

The position for fitting the injection pump sensor can vary, depending on the pump variant. There are three alternatives, namely:

1

There is a hole in the governor housing for the sensor. There is a plug fitted in the hole, which must be removed before the sensor
can be screwed into position.

Note: If oil runs out of the hole when the plug is removed, the governor housing must be topped up with the equivalent amount of
engine oil when the plug has been re-fitted.
(Does not apply to EDC pumps.)

On the front wall of the pump, at the pump shaft flange, there is a bracket provided with a hole where the sensor is to be fitted.

Note: Clean the bracket, check that it is firmly attached and undamaged before fitting the sensor.

Check that the pump setting is correct.

Tap the measuring pin (included with tool 8230) into the injection pump flange

Note: Make sure that the measuring edge points straight out from the centre of the shaft.

Fit holder 8230, but do not tighten down the bolts.

Adjust the holder so that the gauge fits against the edge of the measuring pin and tighten the bolts.
