ASSESSMENT DATE: _November 15, 2012_____________
The welding department have been tasked to repair a storeroom required to store materials and
equipment for the Department. Manual metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding and gas
tungsten metal arc welding processes will be used to complete the task. They are required to use
(E7018) electrodes, aluminum and mild steel plates. They are also required to use the mild steel
plate to make (E7018) groove weld and fillet weld with the aim of improving penetration and
reducing weld defects.
1. State three (3) safety precautions that the welders must adhere to when carrying out the
task above.
3. State three (3) types of tungsten electrode that could be used during the repairing process.
4. Based on the task above, state the current that should be used to weld the aluminum
material that will be used to repair the store room and explain why.
6. Explain the importance of keeping the gas flowing after the arc has been broken.
7. How should tungsten be prepared for Direct Current Gas Tungsten ARC welding.
8. Explain the purpose of the inert Gas in GTAW that could be used to do the task?
9. Discuss two (02) types of electrical circuit use for GTMW to complete the task above.
9. Sketch and label a typical V Groove weld joint that related to the task.
10. With the aid of a diagram illustrate two (02) types of penetration that could be used to
repair the store room.
11. State two (02) types of welding defects that could occur during the repairing of the store
room.
