The Corona Spread in Surabaya

            The aim of this report is to show the spread of covid-19 in Surabaya, East Java, which
is considered not as rapid as the other big cities in Indonesia. The data for the people under
medical supervision (ODP) and patients under supervision (PDP) along with death toll and
the positively infected patients is taken from the health department as well as the interviews
to the authorised parties.
It is confirmed that today on the 29th March 2020, the number of positively infected
patients in Surabaya only is still slightly rising from 20 people to 25 people. Meanwhile, the
patients under supervision (PDP) and people under medical supervision (ODP) are overall 45
and 78. However, there has been positive updates about the covid-19 patients as there 11
people are regarded as negatively infected and have been discharged from the hospital. It is
quite in contrast to the number of death toll today, which is only one patient.
Such phenomena in Surabaya, if compared to the one in Jakarta or Bandung, is merely
drastic. To find out more about such, the interviews to the medical experts in Surabaya, as
well as the laymen was conducted on 16th to 21st of March in all areas in Surabaya. It is said
that the slow increase of infection in this city is considerably due to the fact that the people in
the city tends not to take mass-public transport as in Jakarta, the swift public awareness on
the danger of corona so that social distancing can be easily applied here. Moreover,
consuming turmeric, ginger and other spices which contains curcumin and does help the
people raise their physical immunity, has been done by most residents of Surabaya on a daily
or at least regular basis.
In brief, based on the survey and the study result of the slow spread of corona virus in
Surabaya, East Java, the main reason of such phenomenon is the different life style of the
residents in this city compared to the ones in the capital plus the habits of consuming thyme
for their physical immunity so that they are not easily infected by covid-19 outbreak. It shall
be recommended for the Department of Health to suggest such habit to the whole people in
Indonesia plus to ask the government to suggest the people consuming such thyme regularly
to have better immunity to the virus.

Penjelasan Tentang Report Text

Report teks adalah sebuah teks yang umumnya berdasarkan fakta dan angka dengan angka
aktual tentang peristiwa tertentu. Teks ini ditulis dalam kalimat resmi. Data dalam teks ini
secara umum diambil dari hasil survai atau interview dari sumbernya.

Report Text adalah salah satu jenis teks dalam bahasa Inggris yang menjelaskan detail suatu
objek. Detail dalam teks ini adalah detail ilmiah yang meliputi penjabaran objek, baik fisik
maupun nonfisik dari fakta-fakta ilmiah tentang objek tersebut.

Report Text termasuk ke dalam Descriptive Text yang memiliki tujuan untuk memberikan

informasi-informasi kepada pembaca mengenai objek dari teks ini sendiri. Meskipun Report
Text dan Description Text memang hampir sama, namun sebenarnya dua teks ini berbeda.
Report Text cenderung mengarah ke teks faktual ilmiah dan lebih umum dibandingkan
dengan Description Text sehingga tidak ada opini subjektif dari penulis.

Dari penjelasan diatas, teks tersebut dapat dilihat bahwa teks report harus mempunyai
1. Judul yang jelas yang menggunakan Bahasa formal ( bukan berupa singkatan eg. :
I’ve, can’t). Kalimat biasanya menggunakan kalimat pasif..
2. Menggunakan subheadings
3. Menggunakan data nyata dengan angka untuk menunjukkan kebenarannya
4. Menunjukkan kesimpulan
5. Memberikan saran di akhir teks

 Menggunakan Simple Present Tense dan kalimat pasif

Generic Structure of Report Text

Report Text ini mempunyai generic structure yang sama dengan Descriptive Text, yaitu:

A. General Classification
 Bagian ini berisi pernyataan umum yang menjelaskan keterangan objek dari Report
Text ini.
 Menyatakan klasifikasi aspek umum hal; manusia, hewan, tempat umum, tanaman,
peralatan, bencana, dll yang akan dibahas secara umum.

B. Description
 Bagian ini biasanya memberikan gambaran fenomena atau situasi yang terjadi, baik
bagian-bagiannya, sifat, kebiasaan ataupun tingkah lakunya. Pada intinya, bagian ini
menjabarkan klasifikasi yang disajikan secara ilmiah. Namun, hal yang perlu diingat
bahwa Report Text bukan merupakan teks berita, tetapi teks faktual ilmiah.
 Pada bagian ini biasanya memberikan gambaran fenomena-fenomena yang terjadi;
baik bagian-bagiannya, sifat-sifatnya, kebiasaannya, ataupun tingkah lakunya. Intinya
adalah penjabaran dari klasifikasi yang disajikan dengan ilmiah.
 C. Social purpose of the text is menampilkan informasi tentang sesuatu. Biasanya
menggambarkan sesuatu yang umum tentang manusia, hewan, tenaman, daerah,
budaya, transportasi, dan lain-lain.

D. Characteristic/ language features of the report text

 Use of general nouns, eg hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, eg our dog;
– Use of relating verbs to describe features, eg Molecules are tiny particles;
– Some use of action verbs when describing behaviour, eg Emus cannot fly;
– Use of timeless present tense to indicate usualness, eg Tropical cyclones always
begin over the sea;
– Use of technical terms, eg Isobars are lines drawn on a weather map;
– Use of paragraphs with topic sentences to organise bundles of information; repeated
naming of the topic as the beginning focus of the clause.

Keterangan :
– General nouns, maksudnya adalah, suatu benda (baik itu hidup atau mati) yang
bersifat umum. Coba bandingkan : Hunting dogs >< My dog. Hunting dogs bersifat
umum; sedangkan my dog bersifat khusus.

– Relating verbs, dalam grammar disebut juga dengan linking verbs. Seperti to be [is,
am, are: present], seem, look, taste dan lain sebagainya.

– Timeless present tense adalah salah satu penanda waktu dalam simple present
seperti “often, usually, always” dan lain-lain.

– Technical terms, maksudnya adalah istilah-istilah yang meliputi teks report tersebut.
Misalnya tentang “music” maka, istilah-istilah musik harus ada.

Example of Report Text 1– Pigeon

Pigeon

Pigeon refers to all birds of the family Columbidae and order Columbiformes. They consist of 310
species. Some people may also know them as “Doves”. There is no clear distinction between the
use of the word “pigeons” and “doves” until today. But generally, the word “Pigeons” is used to
address the species known as the Rock Dove, while the word “Doves” is used to address a
pigeon that is white.

Pigeons exhibit various size and color based on their species. The smallest species may have
the size of 15 cm and weight 30 g, while the largest species can grow up to 75 cm with the body
weight of 2 kg. Some of their color are: pale gray, white, brown, reddish and black. Most of them
have two black bars on their wings. They have a small head with short beak. Their body is
compact with two large and muscular wings and two short legs on it.

Pigeons can be found almost in any region in the world. They have been domesticated since
10.000 years ago. they have been used by humans for several purposes such as courier to
deliver short written messages, sacred symbols in a wedding ceremony, entertainment in a
magic show and also as a racing birds. Some species are also edible and they are served as
food in some places.

 Handphone

Handphone is one of the many technologies  in this globalization era. Handphone has
function to communicate someone far away without face to face.Now, handphone can be
owned by everyone. Because everyone can buy it and use it. Handphone is handled by
children until adult in this modern life.

Not only to communication, handphone or smartphone has other function. The other function
of handphone is to entertainment such as play games, play music and capturing. Handphone
gives some information in the website. The negative impact from handphone that is
addiction.. For the example is addicted to play games and watch video until forgetting time.
Then, as the handphone user should be able to use them wisely.

Example of Report Text 3– Flood

Flood

A flood is one of natural disaster that caused by an overflow water that submerges land which
is usually dry.  The European Union (EU) Floods Directive defines a flood as a covering
by water of land not normally covered by water.Some floods can occur suddenly and quickly.
Others take days or more.

There are several types of flood. Periodic floods occur naturally on many rivers, forming an
area known as the flood plain.These river floods usually result from heavy rain, sometimes
combined with melting snow, which causes the rivers to overflow their banks.

A flood that rises and falls rapidly with little or no advance warning is called a flash
flood.When floods happen, the water can carry along object. Flooding is very dangerous for
human being.It also has great erosive power and can be extremely destructive.
