1.0 Preface

The construction of vibro stone columns involves partial replacement of weak soil with the
stones (aggregates). The installation of stone column creates a composite material of overall
lower compressibility and higher shear strength than the virgin weak soil

A layer of drainage material is provided on the top of stone columns to allow the drain water
to come out. The typical section of the soil treated with the stone columns is shown below.

The Improved capacity of the soil can be verified by conducting the load test as per IS 15284

Depth

As per Your Design, These columns will be made up of stone aggregate. The depth of the
stone column in this region is between 6.0 to 7.0 m below EGL

Considering structural requirement, subsoil condition and installation techniques the

spacing and diameter of the stone column can be specified as follows.

Method Diameter SPACING of column

column
Top wet feed/ 600/900 As per Design
Bottom Feed

2.0 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to define the method to be followed for the Soil
Improvement Using Top wet feed and Bottom Feed Vibro Stone Columns

3.1 Scope
The work consists of ground improvement using stone columns by bottom feed vibro-
displacement method up to design depths. The Scope of work is broadly divided in following
activities –
1. Filling of the soil for the working platform by client
2. Installation of Stone Columns
3. Quality Control

4.0 Vibro Stone Columns

Stone Column is the process of installation of stones i.e. the comparatively rigid material than
the soil to the desired depth. The process of installation is by displacement of the
surrounding soil. The compaction or densification of surrounding soil occurs and also the
insertion / provision of the more stiff / rigid material than the existing soil which help to take
higher load intensity. The hole of the desired diameter is bored to the designed depth and
then filled up in short stages with the stones and compacting by vibrations. As the
compaction is done by vibrations the installation of stone column is faster and better
compaction is achieved.

Finished Diameter of Vibrostone column 600/900 mm

Equipment Details:

Free hanging Vibrofloat with feeder hopper for aggregate and Tremie Pipe accessories
Crawler mounted Crane of Minimum 40 T capacity 1 N0s
Power pack and Vibrofloat of Penning Make 1 Nos
Loader / JCB / Excavator for Loading the Aggregate in 1 Nos

5.0 Material
Stones / Aggregates
The backfill stones should be clean, durable, angular, hard and resistant to breakage.
Stones used in the work shall be quarry crushed.
For Wet top Feed/ Bottom Feed: It shall be well graded stone of 40 mm down to 10 mm
size.

METHOD STATEMENT Rev. No R0

6.0 Method of work

6.1 Installation of Stone Columns
6.1.1 General Clearance & Leveling of site
Area shall be cleared of the vegetation , mangroves if any. And if Service lines are
passing through the proposed treatment area shall be identified before start of the
work and be protected; diverted or removed whichever is possible. Overhead cables
and any other aerial obstruction which are likely to impede the operation shall be
removed.
If required a working platform of borrow soil material of sufficient thickness for
comfortable movement of machine, whichever is more shall be constructed for machine
movement on the top clay layer.

6.1.2 Marking of Points

With reference of Bench Mark and Reference Boundary Co-ordinates, the points for
installation of stone columns shall be marked on the ground.
The column shall be numbered as Unit identification no. The unit identification number
will be given on the corresponding layout drawing.
The spacing of stone columns shall be as per the approved design.
All the locations shall be marked exactly by survey with reference to the existing pillar
benchmark.
Ensure location with lime powder or pegs at each stone column location.

6.1.3 Erection of Machinery

The machine consists of Pennine Vibroflot – a hydraulically powered eccentric weight
assembly enclosed in heavy tubular steel casing. The Vibroflot is suspended from the
crawler crane with the follower tubes and Hopper for stone feeding attached to it. The
Vibroflot is powered by the powerful diesel power pack generating high centrifugal
forces. The nose of the Vibroflot is tapered to aid penetration of the ground; whilst
vertical fins prevent the Vibroflot rotating during penetration.

Sufficient quantity of the well graded aggregates shall be

pour into the hopper with the help of Aggregate bucket
Installation
Boring:
After the assembly, the power pack shall be started and the
Vibroflot shall be lowered into the ground. The top soil which
show sand till depth of 6mts and bore logs showing the SPT
Value 15 to 54 for which boring of top 6m will be done using
wet method i.e. using water jet to penetrate into top soil and
below hard strata to the desired depth before will be as per
bottom feed method.

6.1.4 Compaction
The aggregates shall then be transported from the stock pile to the installation point by
loader and bucket of the aggregates shall be introduced into the Hopper. The vibrations
shall be applied to the Vibroflot to drive the stones laterally to form the column of the
required diameter. The Vibroflot shall be slightly lifted and lowered until the stone
charge is completely compacted at the tip of Vibroflot. The compaction of the stones
will be indicated by the increase in rig pressure by 10 to 20 bar (In idle condition the
pressure is about 130 bar. The process shall be repeated in lifts of 1.0 m to 1.50 m till
the stone column is formed to the ground level.
After completion of the process the compact stone columns will be constructed to
effect the stabilization of the treated ground.

7.0 Records
The Following records shall be registered for each stone column –
1. Identification number of column; Date and time of start of Installation
2. Time required for completion of column
3. Depth of the column
4. Pressure during Installation

8.1 Quality Assurance Plan – During Installation

a) The aggregates shall be clean, hard, angular, chemically inert, resistant to breakage
and free from organic material (As per IS 383 and IS 2386 Part-I & IV) It shall be well
graded stones of 40 mm down and retained on 10 mm sieve and confirming to
following gradation –

Sieve Size (mm) Percentage Passing

40
30
20
10
4.75

Crushing Value of stones less than 30 % (As per IS 2386)

Impact Value less than 30 % (As per IS 2386)
Testing frequency shall be every day for the gradation of the aggregates. (Enclosed
Format)
The other tests as Specific Gravity, crushing value and impact tests of the aggregates shall
be carried out at the third party for every 5000 cum of material or change in source of
aggregates whichever is earlier.
b) The location of column shall be within ± 100 mm from the actual location.
c) Ensure the depth of the column.
d) The loader bucket and hopper shall be calibrated for the volume of aggregates. Records for
the buckets required for each column shall be maintained as per the attached format.

Ensure that after the stones are dumped down the hole the Vibroflot is lifted and dropped a

short distance (1-2 m) several times to insure the stones reach the bottom and does not arch

across the hole. The Vibroflot should not be completely removed from the hole during

stroking.
