4th Grade Planner-Writing Work Shop

MON TUES WED THURS FRI

Mini-Lesson:
For the first day of this week, we
are going to work on drafting and
brainstorming:
We will be working on creating
a personal narrative about a
day we conquered a fear.
We will start the lesson by
reading the mentor text,
Thunder Cake by Patricia
Pallaco.
After we read the mentor text,
we will practice brainstorming
as a whole group. I will then
model how to draft a piece of
writing  with a think-aloud.
Independent Work:
Students will work on
brainstorming and drafting their
own writing using the draft
template given.
Mini-Lesson:
Today we will work on adding
imagery to a piece of writing:
We will read the mentor text,
Jazz ABC by Wynton Marsalies.
As a whole-group, I will model
how to add imagery to a few
example sentences.
Students will have practice
with partners adding imagery
to a few example sentences.
Independent Work;
During independent  work time,
students will work on adding
imagery to the draft they started
working on yesterday.  their story, or adding more
Mini-Lesson:
Today we will work on adding 
powerful and descriptive
characters in a story:
As a whole-group,  we will go
through the difference
between powerful and
descriptive characters and
non-descriptive/powerful
characters.
I will model and demonstrate
an example of adding a
descriptive character to my
own draft.
Independent Work:
During independent writing
work, students will work on
adding descriptive characters to
description to their current
characters on the draft they are
working on.
Mini-Lesson:
Today, we will work on editing
and revising our current draft we
have been working on all week:
Students will be introduced to
Rainbow Editing. As a whole-
group, we will practice doing
Rainbow Editing with a
personal piece I had written.
Students will work with writing
partners to use Rainbow
Editing on example sentences.
Independent Work
During independent writing time,
students will work on Rainbow
Editing their own piece of writing.
Students will also work with their
writing partner to Rainbow Edit
each others' work.
Publishing Party!
Today, we will be having a
publishing party! To start the
lesson, we will discuss as a whole-
group how to make final copies of
our work by typing our stories on
a computer. We will discuss what
is expected from each student
when we use technology.
After students have had time to
type up their work, we will print
out their final work. Students will
then have a chance to share their
final published work sitting in the
classroom Author's Chair. We will
celebrate each students' work and
give positive feedback to each
student.  

During independent work time, I will pull Accommodations/Modifications:

small-groups for conferences with students.
I will group students based on common
areas they struggle with in writing.
I will differentiate learning during small-groups. Students
who are not comfortable typing will be able to write their
final piece. Students who finish early will have the chance
to assist their writing partner, and/or will apply the mini-
lesson to a different draft in their writing folder.
