State the Problem: (this is a question)

What is the best Ratio between Vinegar and Baking Soda in Homemade Volcanoes for getting the
highest explosion?

Research:
1. To make a Volcano you need white vinegar, baking soda, and a 2-liter soda bottle.
2. If you add water and dish soap it will create foam
3. The baking soda needs to be mixed with water to work.

Rationale:
I am doing this experiment, so people know what the best amount of Vinegar and Baking Soda is to put
in small volcanoes.

Hypothesis:
I think that the explosion height will go higher as you add more baking soda but once you reach
10ml of baking soda it will be too much for the vinegar to handle. Then the explosion height will
decrease as you add more baking soda.

My supplies:
❑ 1 2-liter soda bottle
❑ Baking Soda
❑ White Vinegar
❑ Water (to mix with the baking soda)
My Plan
1st Volcano
Put 3ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

2nd Volcano
Put 5 ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

3rd Volcano
Put 7 ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

4th Volcano
Put 10ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

5th Volcano
Put 15ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

6th Volcano
Put 20ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

7th Volcano
Put 30ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar

8th Volcano
Put 60ml of Baking Soda
Put 50ml of Vinegar
I will measure the explosion height by sticking a ruler in it and seeing how far it got wet, it will
already be measured!

The results: (usually a picture or a graph)

Baking Soda (in ml) Vinegar (in ml) Ratio Heigth of Explosion (in
cm)
2.5 50 0.05 5
5 50 0.1 6.5
7.5 50 0.15 6.75
10 50 0.2 7
15 50 0.3 10
20 50 0.4 10
30 50 0.6 10.5
60 50 1.2 11
My Conclusion:

Looking at our results, our original hypothesis was incorrect. One way we know it is (wrong or right) is that
the height kept on increasing.. We think this happened because the baking soda used all it could use and
then the other bits stayed as a powder inside. . Another interesting that that happened was that we had to
restart the experiment. I think this was because we were using cups that were way too small. In
conclusion, it turns out that 60ml of baking soda and 50ml of White Vinegar is the best of what we looked
at to make a tiny Volcano. If I were to do this again, two things I would change would be to use bigger
cups and measurements and to use a different type of vinegar to see if there is a difference.
