CHAPTER-VII

BHATTI RULERS OF FARIDKOT

Bhatti rulers of Faridkot Princely State other than Brar rulers. After the mention of Rao Bhatti having
established

the town known as Bhatinda in 2nd or 3rd century--

the history of Bhatinda remains almost silent. How-

ever a mention is made to King Bala Rao Bhatti hay-

ing been the ruler of Bhatinda in 865 AD and then

in 1004 during raid by Mahmud of Gajni a Bhatti

Raja Bijai Rai was the ruler in Bhatinda. It is noted

that first of all Mahmud besieged Bhatinda fort (AD

1004) as it was on route from the North-West into

the rich "Ganga Valley". It was bravely defeneded by

Bijai Rai but Mahmud's army had out numbered the

military strength of Bijai Rai and so won and cap-

tured Bhatinda. Secondly all the inhabitants of this

place except those who converted to Islam were put

to death. A huge booty was captured by Mahmud.

Here it is noted that Bhattis in Bhatinda history had

a tragic extinct. Being from the ruling class they

were in fore front in confrontation against the army

of Mahmud of Gajni. After their defeat, those who

converted to Islam were spared while non-converts

were put to death. Again in 1947 this area saw the

exit of Muslim Bhattis who preferred to move to West

Punjab in Pakistan. So both Muslim and

He sacked Hisar in 1180. When Mohd. Ghori invaded

India he had supported him. He sacked and overran

the area up to Delhi but was stopped by Iltutmas.

However later he was made governor of Sirsa and

Bhatinda by Shamash-ud-Din iltutmas (3rd Tartar

King of Delhi). He defeated and vanquished Parmars

from the area of Muktsar. He died in 1214 AD. By

virtue of Faridkot area being part of Bhatinda this

area was also under Rai Hemhal's control. His son

Jandharh succeded him.

Rai Jandharh Bhatti

This king was famous for having 21 (twenty one)

sons.

21 sons

• Bate Rao or Batera

• one of remaining 20 sons was Rai Achal,

Hindu Bhattis from this area vanished. There are

only a few Bhatti houses left in the area like those

of Killian Wali Bhattis or Bhaattis etc. However there

are a number of Dalit Bhattis in this area who are left

unharmed because they were probably not directly

in battle field confrontation with the invaders like

Mahmud of Gajni.

Before Bhallan [the Brar ruler--of course of Bhatti

lineage of Maharawal Jaisal, Rai Jandharh, Batera or

Bate-rao, Rao Sidhu) took control of Faridkot, this

town/area was under the control of Bhattis having

following geneology:--

Maharawal Jaisal Bhatt

He had four sons

Salvaahan-ii Kailan
Rai Hemhal

Pem

There was a revolt against Jaisal in Jaisalmer and as

such he and his son Rai Hemhal had moved towards

Delhi/Hissar. Salivahan-ii and Kailan remained as

kings there in Jaisalmer.

Rai Hemhal

He was born in 1150 AD. He was a great warrior.

(Mokal. C. or Mokal Chand or Mokalsi)

Raja Mokal Chand Bhatti

It is understood that according to the prevelent

custom of primogeniture eldest son succeded to

the throne. So Bate Rao had succeded to the main

throne of territory from Hisar upto Bhatinda and

other princes had their principalities around and

nearby that throne. Area of Faridkot was nearby/

around the main throne. So it could have been

with the younger princes of Jandharh and brothers

of Bate Rao. Hence present princely state of Farid-

kot was definitely under the control of Raja Mokal

Chand Bhatti who was from the lineage of Rai Manjh

Bhatti. As compared to Bhatinda, Sirsa and Hissar

the princely state of Fraidkot gained more promi-

nence subsequently.

It's naming as Faridkot can be taken back to the visit

of Baba Sheikh Farid Shakarganj: ---
