Checklist for Leopold maneuvers and measurement of the fundal height

1. Workplace preparation:
• Preparation of non-sterile gloves and disinfectant O
• Tape
2. Infection control measures:
• Hygienic disinfection of hands O
• Gloves O
3 Communication with patient:
• Indications for examination O
• Steps O
• Explanation of possible results O
4. Placement the patient on coach in semi – recumbent position O

5. 1st Leopold maneuver:


- Palpate the woman's upper abdomen (fundus uteri) with both hands O
- If possible determine fetal part, that is found in fundus uteri O

6. 2nd Leopold maneuver:

- Hands move down by both sides of the uterus O


- Fetal position is determined O

o fetal back feel firm and smooth


o fetal extremities feel like small irregularities and protrusions

7. 3rd Leopold maneuver :

- Grasp the lower portion of the abdomen just above the pubic symphysis O
with the thumb and third finger of the right hand
- Determine fetal presenting part and it’s location O

4th Leopold maneuver :
- Face the woman's feet O
- Fingers of both hands were moved gently down the lowerpart of the O
uterus toward the pubis,
- Determine fetal presenting part and its location O
o If hand can be placed between a presenting part and symphysis,
presenting part is fixed in the inlet
o If a presenting part is located in line with symphysis and
examinators hands can’t be placed behind it, presenting part is
not fixed in the inlet

9. Fundal height measurement:


- Place the tape with zero mark on the highest point of uterine fundus O
with centimeter labels down (not visible to the doctor)
- Measure fundal height along uterine axis toward the symphysis O
- Read the result O
- Fix the result in gravidogram O
