Two digit addition and subtraction

Performance Based Assessment

1. Standard to be assessed: CC.2.1.1.B.3 Use place-value concepts and properties of operations to

add and subtract within 100.

2. The students will represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 100 by
finding subtraction problems around the room and solving them.

3. Proficiency levels:
a. Target = 77% 7 out of 9
b. Acceptable = 66% 6 out of 9
c. Unacceptable = 55% or below

4.

Target Acceptable Unacceptable Total

Number of 16 3 2 21
students

% of students 76% 14% 9% 100%

5. Analysis:
a. Student Strengths: One of the strengths that the students portrayed was showing the
capability to write the larger number first in a subtraction problem. Out of the 21
students, none of them wrote a number sentence backwards. Leading up to this activity
some of the students did struggle with this concept but they all shined in that aspect here.
Another strength was being able to solve the problems. The lesson that preceded this
assessment was where they learned the subtraction of tens. Since most of the students
were able to score a target or acceptable, 19 out of 21, solved the problems with ease.
b. Students Struggles: The biggest area of struggle for the students came when they needed
to draw a model using ten frames. Only three of the students provided drawings. The
students were told to show a drawing before starting the activity and during. I believe this
struggle might be in part to my error for not providing written directions of the activity
sheet.
c. Error Pattern: Two error patterns that occurred were subtraction by 40 and subtraction by
70. The students who showed these errors were the students who scored acceptable or
unacceptable.
6. Remediation Plan
a. The remediation plan for this activity will focus heavily on showing how to provide a
drawing with math sentences and reteaching subtraction by 10’s. For showing a drawing
the plan will be a whole group quick overview before a new lesson. This concept will be
heavy focus going forward from this point on in math and the students will be required to
do so. Also, anytime the students need to provide a drawing, it will be clearly stated on
their paper. Reteaching subtraction by 10’s will be a small group for the 5 students who
did not score at target level. During this small group the students will have a handheld
material where they can physically show their math.
