CONNECT IDEAS IN TEXT
Reviewing text features helps readers connect ideas to better understand the
structure and purpose of an article. Some common text features are:
• Title: Identifies the text and the topic
• Introductory Question and Paragraph: Following the title, it may reveal the writer’s focus
or main idea
• Subheading: Signals the start of a new topic or section and identifies what it will be about
• Graphic Aids: Helps readers visualize people, places, things, and ideas. Graphic aids include
illustrations, maps, and diagrams.

Directions: Record text from the article in the chart and write the scientific facts you
learn from it. Some ideas have been recorded for you.
