What is this thing called love

Gary Burton’s solo analysis by Federico Tula Ruiz

The harmonic base of the solo is morphologically organized like this: A-A-B-A

1) 1st A part: Through this phrase, Gary plays several arpeggios over the chord notes,
filling the space between them with chromatisms.

2) 2nd A part: Over the first four bars he picks a tuplet + two eights rhythm pattern to
break the “eights monotony”. Here the emphasis is on the rhythmic variation, rather
than melodic. Then he goes back to the eights pattern, moving the melody over the
chord notes.

3) B part: Here, he makes a syncopated melody with the chord notes, using quarters
and eighths. Then, in the 2nd bar of the Ab7 chord, the melody takes back the eighths
rhythm and then returns to the syncopation pattern over the G7 chord.

4) A part: This final phrase is similar to the first A part, where the melody gains fluidity
through the chord notes arpeggios, filling the space between them with passing notes
and chromatisms.

P.D: Sorry if I had some grammatical mistake that could have made you misunderstood
the analysis. I tried my best.
