SECTION 26 95 00_ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS


A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including general and supplementary conditions
and Division 01 Specifications sections, apply to this section.
B. Read this section in conjunction with other related sections, the design drawings, contractor
conditions and MEPF Scope of Works.
C. Conduit, wire and cable installations performed under this division shall comply with the
requirements of Division 26.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. This section includes:

1.3 REFERENCE STANDARDS


A. In addition to the requirements indicated on the Design Drawings and the MEPF Scope of Works,
the Work shall be in accordance with the following standards, codes and relevant statutory
requirements.
1. UAE Fire and Life Safety Code, latest edition.
2. Dubai Civil Defence.
3. Dubai Municipality.
4. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
5. American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM International Standards.
6. British Standards Institution (BSI) Group.
7. Consumer Electronics Association, CEA Standards.
8. Lightning Protection Institute, LPI Standards.
9. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE Standards.
10. International Electrical Testing Association, NETA Standards.
11. Telecommunications Industry Association, TIA Standards.
12. National Electrical Manufacturers Association, NEMA Standards.
13. National Fire Protection Association, NFPA Standards.
14. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. General: Comply with the requirements of Division 01 General Requirements and MEPF Scope of
Works procedures and submit the following.

B. No separate submittal is required. Submit product data for motors, starters, and other electrical
components with submittal data required for the equipment for which it serves, as required by the
individual equipment specification sections.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE


A. The Quality Control/Assurance duties shall be performed by the Contractor. The system of Quality
Control/Assurance verification by the Contractor shall be in accordance with ISO 9000 standards
of Quality Assurance.
B. Design, manufacture, testing and method of installation of all apparatus and materials furnished
under requirements of these specifications shall conform to latest publications or standards.
C. Provide testing and inspections in accordance with Division 01 General Requirements, MEPF
Scope of Works and Section 26 01 26 – Maintenance Testing of Electrical Systems.

1.6 RELATED SECTIONS

A. This Section specifies the basic requirements for electrical components, which are an integral part
of packaged mechanical equipment and other mechanical systems equipment. These components
include, but are not limited to factory-installed motors, starters, and disconnect switches furnished
as an integral part of packaged mechanical equipment or other mechanical systems equipment.
B. The work under Division 22 & 23 shall include the following items of related electrical work, unless
noted otherwise:
1. Ensure the proper connecting, adjusting, and placing into service all electrical equipment
required for the mechanical work.
2. Providing and installing the appropriate electric motors for all motor-driven equipment in the
mechanical work. These motors shall be as part of each item of equipment as specified.
The electrical service to the motor and associated electrical work shall be part of the
electrical work in Division 26, 27 & 28.
3. Electrical devices with piping connections, such as pneumatic-electric switches, solenoid
valves, insertion stats, and flow switches shall be provided and installed as part of the
mechanical work with final connections and electrical testing as part of the electrical work in
Division 26, 27 & 28. The contractor shall ensure the timely liaison between all parties to
deliver fully commissioned systems in time with the contract programme.
4. Factory-wired motors and control panels for packaged equipment shall be as specified in
Division 22 & 23, and shall be provided and installed under the mechanical work unless
specifically noted otherwise. Control panels for packaged equipment shall be modified, if
necessary, as part of the mechanical work to include the following safety features:
a. Control panels that contain pneumatic, hydraulic, or other non-electrical parts
requiring adjustment, maintenance, or repair shall be provided with a door interlock
de-energizing all exposed, electrically live parts or wiring when the door is opened.
b. Where control panels include non-electrical components requiring servicing by
workmen other than qualified electricians, all terminals and wiring within the control
panel shall be suitably protected to prevent injury to personnel and to prevent
electrical contact with tools or material.
c. All electric ladder-control diagrams for packaged equipment shall include terminal-
strip designations showing as-built wiring.

d. All electrical work not included in the mechanical work above shall be part of the
electrical work in Division 26, 27 & 28.
5. Control wiring for components of package equipment shall be under Mechanical work as per
manufacturer requirements and recommendation unless as noted on drawings.
6. Temperature control wiring between control panel to motor starter and VFD for equipment
shall be part of the mechanical work under Division 22 & 23. Power wiring between remote
motor starter or VFD to electric motor shall be part of mechanical work under Division 22 &
23.
C. Specific electrical requirements (i.e. kilowatt and electrical characteristics) for mechanical
equipment shall be as scheduled on the Drawings.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MOTORS
A. General: The following are basic requirements for simple or common motors. For special motors,
more detailed and specific requirements are specified in the individual equipment specifications.
B. Electric Motors:
1. All electric motors shall meet or exceed premium-efficiency requirements for induction type,
complying with requirements of IEC Standards, suitable for intended load, voltage, phase,
frequency, service, and location
2. Limit maximum motor speeds to 1500 rpm, unless otherwise specified.
3. Motors 1.1 kW and larger shall be 3 phase, 50 Hz, squirrel cage induction motors unless
specifically specified to the contrary in subsequent Sections of this Division.
a. Refer to Drawings for voltage requirements.
b. Totally enclosed motors rated 0.559 kW, 1000 rpm, or 0.745 kW and larger, and all
drip-proof motors shall have a 1.10 continuous-duty service factor at 50 deg C
ambient temperature.
c. Insulation system shall be IEC Class F or better.
d. Provide double-shielded, grease-lubricated ball bearings with grease pockets on
each side for regreasing in service.
e. Provide inlet and outlet grease connections in 5.59kw and larger motor housings for
each bearing.
f. Motors 3.73 kW and smaller and all roof-mounted equipment motors shall be
provided with factory sealed, permanently lubricated ball bearings.
4. Motors smaller than 1.1 kW shall be single phase, 230-volt, 50Hz permanent split-capacitor
type with integral thermal overload protection.
5. Bearings shall be factory sealed, permanently lubricated ball type.
6. Motors shall have thermistor protection for sizes above 5.5kW, except for fans and pumps
related to smoke control systems and life-safety systems.
7. Provide totally enclosed motors, or suitable protection per IEC Standards, in locations
exposed to the weather or dripping water and inside Air Handling Units. Other motors shall
be open drip-proof.
8. Provide multispeed motors shall be provided where specifically scheduled.
9. Electric motors served by variable frequency drives shall be specifically designed for
inverter duty and rated for continuous VFD application. Refer to Division 26-
10. Minimum Efficiency and Power Factor: Minimum Power Factor shall be 85 percent, in all
sizes, and minimum efficiency shall be as tested in accordance with the latest edition of
IEC-34-2-1. The minimum efficiencies shall be guaranteed and shall comply with Table 10.8
of ASHRAE 90.1 2004 as follows:

12. Overload protection: Built-in thermal overload protection where indicated, internal sensing
device suitable for signaling and stopping motor at starter.
13. Noise rating: Comply with IEC "Quiet" rating on motors located in occupied spaces of
building.
14. Nameplate: Indicate the full identification of manufacturer, ratings, characteristics,
construction, special features and similar information.

2.2 STARTERS, ELECTRICAL DEVICES, AND WIRING


A. Motor Starters:
1. Provide starter compatible with motor furnished with equipment. Provide sufficient data with
shop drawings and submittals to clearly indicate all motor starter requirements.

2. Provide power supplies and local isolating disconnects (isolators) to all mechanical
equipment with pre-packaged starter components as required to conform with the Contract
Documents.
3. Furnish single-phase motors with manual motor starters having integral overload protection.
4. Furnish 3-phase motors with full voltage, magnetic across-the-line starters unless otherwise
noted in equipment specification or drawings.
5. Provide solid-state reduced voltage starters for motors 18.5kw and above.
6. Selector switch: Either press to test/off/automatic or start/stop in accordance with the
requirements of the Contract Documents.
7. On’ low voltage pilot light (two lights for reversing or two speed starters) complete with
required interlocks.
8. 2 N.O. and 2 N.C. electrical interlocks.
9. Control transformer - minimum size 100VA with a 24V secondary voltage.
10. Undervoltage protection, adjustable between 65% - 85% of the service voltage.
11. Circuit breakers shall have a short circuit rating as indicated on drawings with a minimum of
22kA RMS Sym at 400 volts.
12. 0.5hp and larger variable speed motors, shall be equipped with inherent overheating
protection, which shall consist of thermistors, one for each phase, embedded in the stator
windings. The wires of the thermistor shall be brought out to the motor terminal block for
field wiring into the starter holding coiled through a conduit.
13. The motor tripping device shall be an O/L relay with pilot light and alarm contacts.
14. The motor tripping device shall be housed in the individual starters
15. Field install in starters, the tripping devices supplied by the motor manufacturers for field
wiring connection to thermistor wires. Supply and install auxiliary relay in starter, if holding
coil rating exceeds capacity of tripping device.
16. All variable speed motors shall be supplied complete with a terminal box housing a standard
bakelite terminal plate for windings and thermistor termination studs complete with
necessary links for field wiring.
17. Supply and install timing relays in starters equipped with test-off automatic or on-off
switches, and which serve motors larger than 23kW. Set timers as required to provide
sequenced starting of motors after power outage.
18. Two speed starters shall be provided with an adjustable time delay relay to provide a time
delay on transfer of motor from high to low speeds.
19. Reduced voltage starters shall be provided where required to conform with the Contract
Documents. They shall be as previously mentioned, but shall be Star Delta closed circuit
transition type.
20. Key switch type emergency stop buttons shall be provided where shown on drawings or as
required by authorities’ jurisdiction. These shall have red mushroom head, push to stop, and
released only by means of the key switch. Provide two keys for each unit supplied.
21. Provide thermal overload protection for all 3-phase legs.

22. Provide fail-open auxiliary contacts, prewired to a terminal strip, for future remote alarm
wiring and run-time totalization.
23. Variable Frequency Drive Controllers: Provided under Division 26.
24. Above requirements are minimum for all starters. Extra accessories shall be provided in
accordance with the requirements of the Contract Documents
B. Manual switches shall have pilot lights and extra positions for multi-speed motors.
C. Overload protection: Melting alloy type thermal overload relays.
D. Magnetic Starters:
1. Maintained contact push buttons and pilot lights, properly arranged for single speed or multi-
speed operation as indicated.
2. Trip-free thermal overload relays, each phase.
3. Interlocks, pneumatic switches and similar devices as required for coordination with control
requirements of Division 22 & 23 Controls Sections.
4. Externally operated manual reset.
5. Under-voltage release or protection
E. Motor connections:
1. Flexible conduit for final connection to motors as specified under Division 26, 27 & 28,
except where plug-in electrical cords are specifically indicated.

2.3 MOTORISED FIRE AND SMOKE DAMPERS


A. Provide power supplies to all Motorized Fire and Smoke Dampers (MFSDs) where these are
located throughout the building, irrespective of whether connection units are shown on the drawing
or otherwise.
B. Power supply shall be sourced from local Emergency Distribution Board (EDB) within the electrical
cupboard, with appropriately selected circuit protective devices and final circuit cabling. The EDB
will receive a supply from the generator in case of mains failure.
C. There shall be an unswitched fused connection unit provided local to each MFSD.
D. A maximum of 5 MFSDs shall be supplied from a single radial circuit, dependent on circuit run and
volt drop calculations to verify final circuit details.
E. All final circuit cabling shall be provided as fire protected for a minimum of 120mins.
