POST-PRODUCTION CRASH-COURSE

WEEK ONE

DAY ONE:

BASICS OF POST-PRODUCTION

 Introduction to editing
 The history of film/video editing
o The beginning of cinema & silent cinema (titles, wides)
o Georges Melies – magic (tricks, but theatric)
o The Birth of A Nation – DW Griffith (cinematic, CU, WS, etc.)
o Soviet montage (Eisenstein, Kuleshov, Vertov)
o Conventional cinematic language of editing forms
 180 degree rule
 Continuity cutting
 30 degree rule
o Modern:
o 1960s French Wave editing
 Jump cuts
 Outdoor
 Handheld
o MTV editing
o Experimental
 Considerations for post in pre-production and production
o Script, shot-list, call-sheet with shoot breakdown
o Consolidated file delivery (what shots were covered when)
o Calling shots and takes (clap for sound)
o Mark-ups for a good/no-good shot/take
o Continuity is marked on set
o Coverage (establishing shot, close-ups, etc.)
o Back-ups
o Shooting in the right format

INTRODUCTION TO EDITING SOFTWARE

 Download and installation of Adobe Premiere Pro CC (Trial)


 Basic workover of all the tools and functionality of basic editing
 Cutting, dragging, copying, effects
 Editing etiquette:
o Autosave
o Multiple file versions after major changes
o File naming/numbering system
o Raws are unaffected
o Back-ups!
o

SMALL ASSIGNMENT
 Importing video footage
 Consolidating and organising video footage (not affecting raw root)
 Making a sequence
 Dragging desired clips into the sequence
 Cutting, dragging, etc.
