Tutorial 2 (Common for all branches ECE & CSE )

1. Find the probability that at most 5 defective bolts will be found in a box of 200 bolts if it
is known that 2 percent of such bolts are expected to be defective.(Ans:0.784)

2. A bus arrives every 10 minutes at a bus stop. It is assumed that the waiting time for a
particular individual is a random variable with a uniform distribution. (a) What is the
probability that the individual waits more than 7 minutes? (b) What is the probability that
the individual waits between 2 and 7 minutes?

3. The length of the shower on a tropical island during rainy season has an exponential
distribution with parameter 2, time being measured in minutes. What is the probability
that a shower will last more than 3 minutes? If a shower has already lasted for 2 minutes,
what is the probability that it will last for at least one more minute?(Ans: 0.0025,0.1353).

4. A multiple choice test consists of 8 questions with 3 answers to each question (of which
one is correct). To get a distinction the student must secure at least 75 % correct answers.
What is the probability that the student secures a distinction?

5. If Chebyshev’s inequality for a random variable X with mean 12 is 4,
then find the standard deviation of X.

6. A random variable X has probability density function has f ( x )  e , x  0 .Use

P ( X  1  1) 
Chebycheff’s inequality to how that 4 and show also that the actual

probability is e .
7. In a normal distribution 7 % of the items are under 35 and 89 % are under 63.
What are the mean and the standard deviation of the distribution? What
percentage of items are under 49? (50.3,10.33,45 %)

8. The marks obtained by a number of students in a certain subject are assumed to

be approximately normally distributed with mean 55 and a SD of 5. If 5 students
are taken at random from this set what is the probability that 3 of them would
have scored marks above 60?(Ans:0.0283)

9. A particularly long traffic light on your morning commute is green 20 % of the

time that you approach it. Assume that each morning represents an independent
trial. (a) Over 5 mornings what is the probability that the light is green on exactly
one day ? (b) Over 20 mornings what is the probability that the light is green on
exactly four days? (c) Over 20 mornings what is the probability that the light is
green on more than four days ?

10. The probability density function of the time required to complete an assembly

operation is f ( x )  0.1,30  x  40 seconds. (a) Determine the proportion of

assemblies that requires more than 35 seconds to complete ? (b) What time is exceeded
by 90 % of the assemblies ? (c) Determine the mean and variance of time of assembly.

11. The fill volume of an automated filling machine used for filling cans of
carbonated beverage is normally distributed with a mean of 12.4 fluid ounces and
a standard deviation of 0.1 fluid ounce. (a) What is the probability that a fill
volume is less than 12 fluid ounces ? (b)If all cans less than 12.1 or greater than
12.6 fluid ounces are scrapped , what proportion of cans is scrapped ? (c)
Determine specifications that are symmetric about the mean that include 99 % of
all cans?

12. A coin is tossed until first head occurs. Assuming that the tosses are independent
and the probability of head occurring is p, find the probability that an odd number
of tosses is required is equal to 0.6.

13. A discrete random variable X can take the values –a, 0, a with probabilities 1/8,

P  X  2 
3/4, 1/8 respectively. Compute and compare with the Chebycheff’s
inequality bound.
