WORD FORMATION

DERIVATION - New words can be made by adding a PREFIX OR A SUFFIX.

a. urgent (adjective) + -cy = urgency (noun)


b. ir- + responsible (adjective) + -y = irresponsibly (adverb)
c. national (adjective) + -ise = nationalise

There are many word beginnings (prefixes) and word endings (suffixes) that can be added to
a word to change its meaning or its word class. The most common ones are shown in the
image below, followed by examples of how they are used in the process of word formation.
