Types Of Transmission Line Conductors

1. All Aluminum Alloy Conductor (AAAC)

Advantages:
 Resist Corrosion
 Used in high level of pollution
 High strength to weigh ratio
 Less power loss
Disadvantages:
 High Cost then ACSR
 Softer then steel

2. Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR)

Advantages:
 High Tensile Strength
 Used for longer span
 Less Support Needed
 Due to greater diameter corona reduce
Disadvantages:

 In heavy ice load areas reduce strength

 Softness annealed aluminum strand and possible need for pre-
stressing prior to clipping and sagging increases installation cost.
3. Aluminum Conductor Aluminum-Alloy Reinforced
Advantages:

 High current carrying capacity

 High strength
 Lower conductor weight

Disadvantages:
 High cost
 WAPDA uses ACSR aluminum conductor steel reinforced
 We have also selected ACSR for the generation station located on
Japan road as the selected route has ups and downs which is why we need
high strength with suitable cost

Step Up & Step Down Transformer:
This type of transformer is categorized on the basis of number of turns in
the primary and secondary winding and the induced EMF.
Step Up transformer transforms a low voltage, high current AC into a
high voltage, low current AC system in this type of transformer the
number of turns in the secondary winding is greater then the number of
turns in the primary winding.
Step Down transformer converts a high primary voltage associated with
the low current into low a low voltage, high current. With this type of
transformer, the number of turns in the primary winding is greater than
the number of turns in the secondary winding.

Power Transformer:
The power transformers are used in the transmission networks of higher
voltages. The ratings of the power transformer are as follows 400KV,
110KV, 66KV, 33KV. They are mainly rated above 200MVA. Mainly
installed at the generating stations and transmission substations. They are
designed for maximum efficiency of 100%. They are larger in size as
compared to distribution transformer.

Distribution Transformer:
This type of transformer has lower ratings like
11KV,6.6KV,3.3KV,440KV & 230V. They are rated less than 200 MVA
and used in the distribution network to provide voltage transformation in
the power system by stepping down the voltage level where the electrical
energy is distributed and utilized at the consumer end.
