Thematic Unit Narrative Questions:

Theory and its contribution to teaching and learning.
• What theorists influenced your unit and planning?
o The theorists that influenced my teaching philosophy the most would be John Dewey, Jean Piaget,
Jerome Bruner, and Lev Vygotsky. I have always been supportive and intrigued by the constructivist
approach. I hope to incorporate many activities that encourage constructivism.
The Learning Environment
• How you will prepare the environment to introduce the unit
o I will prepare the environment through structured expectations and plenty of time to mentally prepare
students. In an ideal setting, I would slowly incorporate integrated learning from a small part of the day to
half of the school day to a full school day. If that is not possible, I would prepare students by giving them
an overview of the activities that they will be participating in. I am a big believer in visual aids, so
constructing a Thematic Unit Daily Schedule would be helpful for both myself and the students.
Teaching Resources
• How will you make the unit constructive and engaging?
o In my Thematic Unit, you will find explorative activities that allow the students to take control of their role
in the learning environment. I have created opportunities for classroom discussion, self-expression,
independent study, research-based assignments, hands-on materials, and more. To incorporate
technology, students will be using their chrome books frequently. I have also included several
instructional videos to enhance the content and lesson activities and provide an exciting introduction to
several of the assignments.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
• What are some developmentally appropriate teaching strategies that demonstrate constructivist principles you
hope to utilize?
o My teacher strategies to make the environment student-centered, where the learners must be actively
involved. In many of the activities, the students will take the lead and the teacher will act as a facilitator to
classroom discussions and any questions. In addition to interactive lesson activities, many of the daily
assignments incorporate real-life scenarios.
Lesson Plan Expectations
• Are objectives, skills, and assessment/evaluation clearly identified?
o Yes, you will find an objective and assessment strategy for every subject activity. By clearly identifying
objectives, the expectations are easily delineated to the students and what they are supposed to get out
of each activity.
Classroom Management
• Classroom management strategies that assist the teacher and children in feeling a sense of belonging?
o Each lesson plan incorporates a type of learning community, whether it’s starting in whole class
instruction and breaking into small groups, parents or individuals. I would love to see the students asking
each other questions before asking me. I believe that a sense of belonging and finding purpose within the
classroom is extremely important for long-term student engagement. I manage my classroom by modeling
ideal behavior, letting students establish guidelines (within reason), encouraging initiative, and building
excitement for content.
Lots of interaction!
• Opportunities for child-initiated play or choice, cooperative learning opportunities?
o Yes! Many of my assignments are cooperative based. While the projects in my Thematic Unit require a
large amount of independent work time, students will be able to share their completed project and
assignment with the class. I want to culture a positive environment where hard work is validated and
praised.
