Bar Element Example

Find the stresses in the two bar assembly which is

loaded with force P, and constrained at the two ends

MKT410 - Mehmet Güleç / Lec-2 11

Bar Element Example

Determine the support reaction forces at the two ends of the

bar shown above

P=6.0×104 N A=250 mm2

Δ= 1.2 mm
E=2.0×104 N/mm2 L= 150 mm

Bar Element Example

Calculate the displacement of the end of the bar

(a) by modeling the bar as a single element having cross-sectional area
equal to the area of the actual bar at its midpoint along the length

(b) using two bar elements of equal length and similarly evaluating the area at
the midpoint of each

(c) using integration to obtain the exact solution.
