SESSION 3 DRAFT: CASE STUDIES DESCRIPTION AND EVALUATION

In conclusion, intensive farming embraces the concepts of industrialization, with the purpose of
increasing productivity of a relatively small piece of land to reach the maximum sustainable yield. This is
achieved through the use of inputs such as fertilizers, antibiotics and mechanization of agriculture. On
the other hand, extensive farming will limit such inputs in comparison to the size of the land under
Conclusio cultivation, which is much larger than in an intensive system. Since the essence of intensive farming
n1 depends on the use of chemicals to maximize crop production, and extensive farming depends on the
(100 to 200 natural fertility of soil and the climate of the area, intensive farming, in my opinion, is the less preferred
words) farming system. Even though economically it is very advantageous, the other two pillars of
sustainability, environmental and social, suffer greatly. For instance, many times this farming system is
associated with animal cruelty due to the various growth hormones and antibiotics given to the
livestock. Furthermore, the crowding of livestock in a small space will result in poor living conditions
and poor hygiene for the animals, leading to the spread of infectious diseases. In turn, this will affect
individuals who end up eating the food products that come from intensive farming systems due to the
overuse of chemicals who harm human health. The environmental effects are another reason why it is a
less preferred farming system since the removal of trees and slush and burn techniques used to create
room for agriculture has led to massive deforestation and soil erosion. As a result, natural habitats and
biodiversity have been heavily affected as destructive practices have persistently contributed to loss of
habitats. Therefore, extensive farming, with its lower requirements of inputs and improved animal
welfare, appears to be a more environmentally and people-friendly farming practice.
