BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards: 2nd Grade


Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or
describe.

2. Objectives:
Students will be able to label parts of the bus that Rosa Parks rode on.

3. Materials/Equipment:
Book- Back of the Bus
Blooms Level (SWBAT)
Historical Fiction Worksheet
Photo of the bus that carried Rosa Parks (prior to being restored) (2 nd page of Historical
Worksheet)]
Crayons/Colored Pencils

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book:
o The teacher will explain what Historical Fiction is to the class.
o Introduce and read the book, Back of the Bus, to the class.

B. Extension Activity:
o The teacher will write, “Main Purpose” on the whiteboard.
o The teacher will ask students to raise their hand to tell what the main purpose of
the book is.
o The teacher will write all answers on the board and then discuss with the class the
main purpose of the book.
o The teacher will then hold up to show the photo of the bust that carried Rosa
Parks to show the students.
o The teacher will pass out the Historical Fiction Worksheet.
o The teacher will explain that at the bottom of page, there are instruction of what
to label and what to color.
o Students will color/label the worksheet.

5. Closure:
To wrap up this activity, the teacher will ask the students to raise their hand and say why they
feel reading Historical Fiction books such as, “Back of the Bus,” is important.
