Math 206 Practice Problems

For each of these problems, think about if there is a theorem that applies and will make
the computation easier. If your integral is very messy, there is likely an easier way, or some
of the terms need to cancel out (be careful of negative signs!)

(1) Let S be the part of the cylinder x2 + y 2 = 4, where 0 ≤ z ≤ 3, oriented with outward
pointing normal vectors. First, parameterize S, then compute the following integrals.
ZZ
(a) Compute (x + z)dS.
S
ZZ
(b) Compute F · dS, where F(x, y, z) = hx + 1, y, eyz i
S
Now suppose S includes the caps of the cylinder, so it is a closed surface.
ZZ
(c) Compute F · dS, where F(x, y, z) = hy 2 z, ex , xy + 2xi
ZZS
(d) Compute F · dS, where F(x, y, z) = h−x + ey , xz 2 , 2z + sin(xy)i
S
I
(2) Let C be the unit circle, oriented counterclockwise. Compute F · dr for each of the
C
following vector fields.

(a) F(x, y) = h3ex + y, 2x − sin(y)i;

(b) F(x, y) = hex + y, x + sin(y)i;
(c) F(x, y) = hx2 − y, xy + yi.
Z
(3) For each of the following curves C and vector fields F, compute F · dr.
C

(a) C is the curve with parameterization r(t) = het , t − 1, 2i; 0 ≤ t ≤ 1;

F(x, y, z) = hyz, xz, xyi
(b) C is the curve with parameterization r(t) = hcos(t), 2, sin(t)i; 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π;
F(x, y, z) = hy, ey + x, −x + sin(z)i
(c) C is the curve with parameterization r(t) = ht2 , 2t, 1i; 0 ≤ t ≤ 1;
F(x, y, z) = hy, −2x + z, xyzi

Suppose S is the surface of the unit sphere, and F is any vector field. What is
(4) ZZ
curl(F) · dS? Explain in two ways, first using Stokes’ Theorem, and again using
S
the Divergence Theorem. To what other types of surfaces does this apply?
