Exercise 3.1

Explain how mathematics is used in the following areas. Answer in not more than five (5) sentences.

1. Physics
Mathematics is useful in physics as numbers and symbols are used to represent different equations vital to physics. These symbols which would
normally take longer to write in words help physicists work quickly and efficiently. Physics also involves a lot of both pure and applied math to
solve for its problems and discover solutions.
2. Chemistry
Mathematics is used in chemistry to perform experiments, avoid hazardous reactions, anticipate results and avoid wasting valuable resources.
Through measuring and calculating chemicals, temperature, pressure and other factors, the safety of employees as well as the success of the
experiment is guaranteed.
3. Biology
Biologists use math to help them understand their fields better. This is done by plotting graphs and running statistical tests on their sample.
With that said, math is used in biology to construct mathematical models used to predict and describe natural phenomena in living things.
4. Engineering
Engineering is nothing without math. Engineering itself is applied mathematics. In order to build something of use, engineers have to learn
different aspects of math to help them estimate the efficacy as well as the limitations of their projects. Mathematics help engineers analyse
their projects, makes them see better perspectives and provide solutions even before problems become a disaster.
5. Linguistics
Mathematics is manifested in linguistics most especially upon recognizing the pattern of alphabets. This can be shown in the way we can
identify letters no matter the font as we have already memorized the pattern on how its written. It can also be on the pattern of sequencing
words and phrases so as to be grammatically correct. Numbers, in particular, are also used as adjectives in linguistics to determine degrees of
severity and amount of objects.
