ASSIGNMENT 2
ACIDS & BASES

Answer all questions.

1. Trimethylamine, (CH3)3N is an aliphatic amine. The pH of 500 ml of 0.01 M (CH3)3N

solution is 10.2. It reacts with hydrochloric acid, HCl to form trimethylammonium chloride,
(CH3)3NHCl.

a. Based on, both Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis theories, explain the role of (CH3)3N in
this acid-base reaction. Write the appropriate chemical equations.
(3 marks)

b. Calculate the degree of dissociation, α and base ionization constant, Kb for (CH3)3N.
