Sheet Five: Probability, Confidence Interval & Hypothesis Testing

1- A normal population has a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 12. You select a random sample
of 9. Compute the probability if the sample mean is:
a. Greater than 63
b. Less than 56.
c. Between 56 and 63.

2- Recent studies indicate that the typical 50-year-old woman spends $350 per year for personal-
care products. The distribution of the amounts spent follows a normal distribution with a
standard deviation of $45 per year. We select a random sample of 40 women. The mean amount
spent for those sampled is $335. What is the likelihood of finding a sample mean this large or larger
from the specified population?

3- A sample of 49 observations is taken from a normal population with a standard deviation of 10.
The sample mean is 55. Determine the 99 percent confidence interval for the population mean.

4- Locate the value of t under the following conditions.

a. The sample size is 15 and the level of confidence is 95 percent.
b. The sample size is 24 and the level of confidence is 98 percent.

5- The owner of Britten’s Egg Farm wants to estimate the mean number of eggs laid per chicken. A
sample of 20 chickens shows they laid an average of 20 eggs per month with a standard deviation
of 2 eggs per month.
a. Explain why we need to use the t distribution. What assumption do you need to make?
b. For a 95 percent confidence interval, what is the value of t?
c. Develop the 95 percent confidence interval for the population mean.
d. Would it be reasonable to conclude that the population mean is 21 eggs? What about 25 eggs?

6- The waiting time for customers at MacBurger Restaurants follows a normal distribution with a
mean of 3 minutes and a standard deviation of 1 minute. At the Warren Road MacBurger, the
quality assurance department sampled 50 customers and found that the mean waiting time was
2.75 minutes. At the .05 significance level, can we conclude that the mean waiting time is less than
3 minutes?

7- Given the following hypothesis:

A random sample of 12 observations is selected from a normal population. The sample mean was
407 and the sample standard deviation 6. Using the .01 significance level:
a. State the decision rule.
b. Compute the value of the test statistic.
c. What is your decision regarding the null hypothesis?

8- Given the following hypothesis:

A random sample of 10 observations is selected from a normal population. The sample mean was
12 and the sample standard deviation 3. Using the .05 significance level:
a. State the decision rule.
b. Compute the value of the test statistic.
c. What is your decision regarding the null hypothesis?
