Program Description For the Elementary Gifted Classroom

Students in the Bessemer City Schools Gifted Education Program will participate in activities that are designed to develop higher order thinking,
leadership, and affective needs through a concept-based curriculum. For example: A unit on fairy tales using the conceptual lens of culture— the
concept or “big idea” would be culture.
Essential Understandings (for such a unit): Literature reveals the beliefs and values of a given culture or time period. Culture is a way of life of a
group of people who share similar beliefs and customs. The values of a culture influence their views of another culture.
Essential Questions (for such a unit); In what ways does literature reveal the beliefs and values of a given culture/ time period? In what other ways
does a culture communicate similar beliefs and customs (for example: visual and performing arts, government, religion)?
Scaffolded Questions, Thought-provoking Lessons and Activities, Career Connections and a Culminating Performance Task will also be a part of any
concept-based unit.

The higher-level thinking activities are group and individual tasks and projects that require the skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation; some of
these will be teacher-led and the student may choose others (Individual learning styles and interests are studied and considered as well.). Many of
these activities require the use of creative thinking skills including originality, flexibility, fluency, and elaboration. These activities will cover a wide
variety of subjects and build vocabulary.

Leadership activities include the study of leadership styles and skills, practice in effective oral and written communication, and tasks that require
planning, forecasting, and decision making. Students will participate in activities to build citizenship skills as well. Emphasis is placed on being able
to share ideas and opinions in a tactful manner, respecting each other, and on demonstrating teamwork and cooperation at all times.

Activities may include research, writing projects, debate, several art activities, science/technology/math projects, and the opportunity for students to
design and complete individual research projects that they have chosen based on their interests.
