Psychology is the
foundation of personal
development

flourishing of
Humanistic and
Positive Psychology
in the 1950’s

Centered
Theory

15
Humanistic Psychology
waned in the late 1970’s
but was revived by
Martin Seligman

16
MARTIN
SELIGMAN:
▹ President of the
POSITIVE
American
PSYCHOLOGY
Psychological
Association
▹ Noticed how
psychology was
focusing on a
disease model of
human nature

17
MARTIN SELIGMAN and
MIHALY CSIKSZENTMIHALYI
▹ Emphasized what is
good and positive
about human
persons
▹ Desire to achieve
full potentials
▹ “human nature is
basically good”

PERSONAL
DEVELOPMENT
IN
ADOLESCENCE

20
ADOLESCENCE ▹ Transition period between
childhood and early adulthood
▹ Authors Corpuz, Lucas, Borabo,
and Lucido (2010) defined three
stages of adolescence as:
Early adolescence- 10-13 yrs. old
Middle adolescence- 14-16 yrs. old
Late adolescence- 17- 20 yrs. old

21
What happens
in ▹ Puberty to ▹ Turning point ▹ Sense of time
Adolescence? Adulthood of heightened urgency
▹ Most crucial potential and ▹ Lack of
developmental increased concentration
stage vulnerability of required
▹ Must gain a ▹ Rejection of tasks
firm sense of standards of
identity elders

▹ Identity vs. ▹ Divided self-

Identity image
Confusion ▹ Inability to
establish
intimacy

22
BUT ALL OF THOSE
THAT ARE BOUND TO
HAPPEN IN THE
ADOLESCENCE
STAGE IS NORMAL
AND NECESSARY…

23
Personality
Is a pattern of relatively permanent
traits and unique characteristics
that give both consistency and
individuality to a person’s behavior

24
Lesson 1:
Knowing Oneself
How well
do you
know Perdev starts with knowing
yourself? yourself.
Perdev involves self-
awareness that includes
thoughts, feelings, and
behavior.

26
1
Dimensions of the
Self: Physical,
Psychological,
Spiritual

27
SELF
▹ What an individual sees,
perceives, and defines oneself
apart from others.
▹ Cognitive and affective
representation of one’s identity
▹ Three dimensions- physical,
psychological, and spiritual

28
Revolves around the physical body of a human
being (processes, functions, mechanisms, and
chemistry.
Responsible for giving us the ability to move our
muscles, to perceive our surroundings, and to
think of the ideas and opinions that bring
wonders to our lives and others.

PHYSICAL DIMENSION
29
Cognition, behavior, attitude, emotion and
ultimately, personality.
Refers to the individual as a set of
characteristics, behaviors, attitudes,
cognitions, and emotions.

PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSION
30
Viewing ourselves in a spiritual level-
as spiritual beings
Can subjectively be altered and
perceived by the person
Perceived existence of God, of a
greater good, or a Superior Being
related to the humble individual

SPIRITUAL DIMENSION
31
Self-Concept
and Self-Esteem

32
Self-
Concept ▹ Our cognition to ourselves,
what we think and know
about our identity,
personality and
individuality.
▹ “I think therefore I am”

33
The Self-
Concept ▹ Holds that and individual have a
Theory concept of self based on who they
think they are (Actual Self ) and a
concept of who they would be
(Ideal Self)
▹ Ideal Self- the self you aspire to be.
▹ Actual Self- the one that you
actually see.

34
Actual Self Ideal Self
 Built on self-  How we want to be
knowledge  Based on what we
 Derived from social have learned and
interactions experienced
 How we actually are  What our parents
 Self-image have taught us,
what we admire in
others, what our
society promotes,
our best interest

35
Example of Self-
Concept
▹ If you think you are
worthless and
talentless, you end
up identifying
yourselves to the
thought and behave
in such a way that
the thought holds
true (self-fulfilling
prophecy)

36
Self-
Esteem ▹ Our attitude towards
ourselves
▹ How we value
ourselves given the
negative or positive
feedback we
receive
▹ Self-concept is
mostly informational
while self-esteem is
emotionally inclined

37
Remember
that… ▹ Self-concept and ▹ Personality is too
self-esteem are complex to be give
learned variables a absolute solution
▹ Comparing people or formula
is not pleasantly fair
but for some it
actually works to
proper them and
sadly for others, it
bring them more
down.

38

“How much we know and understand ourselves is critically
important, but there is something that is even more essential to
living a Wholehearted Life:
