Journ105 Movie Review Notes
A. Most film reviews followed the tips as published by the Duke University, but since they are
writing for publications and not for their own blogs, some of their personal views (i.e., what
emotions are evoked while watching the film) are not included in the film review. All articles did
however include an in-depth analysis on the movie, especially on the cinematic techniques used
in the films they are reviewing.
The first tip the New York kineber stated on their how-to article was to watch the movie a few
times before writing a review. That way, your article wont only cover the surface of the movie. it
is evident that these writers know have seen enough (or more than enough movies) to create a
decent article on the films stated. However, some writers did deviate from talking about the
actors or their performances, but they did dwell on the techniques used in the film:
cinematography, screenplay, dialogue, CGI, and the people behind the screen to credit the
people who are not usually praised for their hardships in the production.
B. A good film review writer knows the movie he’s reviewing at the back of his hand. He knows
more than the director’s name or the famous actors in the film, but rather knows enough about
the film to critique and analyze it. The writer should have a firm verdict on his evaluation of the
film—whether the movie is worth the reader’s money and time. Most importantly (but not
necessarily), a good film review can make its readers go to the cinema and watch the movie
themselves and makes them think while watching the film.
