I. Objectives
At the end of a 60-minute lesson, the students are expected to:
• Use gerunds and gerund phrases accordingly;
• Construct sentences from a give slideshow;
• Identify worth doing recreational activities.

Teacher’s Activity
A. Routine Activities
Before you take your seats, kindly check if there are pieces of paper under your
chairs, pick it up and arrange your chairs properly.

Now, let us check the attendance. Do we have absentees today?

What are the things we did last meeting?
C. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
To start our lesson for today, I will pick some students to pick one number and each number
has corresponding words.
(The students will act the chosen word then the rest will guess the student’s action that ends in
–ing.)
Actions to be performed by the students:

4. Planting
5. Dancing

Exactly! When a verb ends in –ing, it may be a gerund or a present participle. It is important to
understand that they are not the same.
What is the difference between gerund and present participle?
(the students will raise their answers)
Now, lets see if you really understand the lesson, but before that I will discuss first what are
the different functions of gerunds.
(the teacher will discuss the different functions of the gerund, which is subject, direct object,
appositive, subjective complement and object of preposition)

2. Application
Very good! Let’s apply now what you’ve learned. I will group you into five and answer the
following questions. Use these worksheets for you to answer the activity.
“For your activity, you will locate the gerund (gerund phrase) in each sentence. Then identify
the gerund’s function in the sentence as subject, direct object, subjective complement, object
of preposition or appositive.
Note: If the gerund is part of a gerund phrase, include the whole phrase in your answer.
1.The maintenance workers continued cleaning up the debris from the storm.
2. A problem that continually plagues me is remembering people’s names.
3. Clarence has a real talent for putting people at ease.
4. Keeping the crowds orderly during the celebration will be a difficult task.
5. The woman insisted on paying for her own meal.
