UNDERSTAND
Inclement weather can cause transportation problems or locally hazardous conditions.
Regionally, conditions can vary widely, with some localities experiencing much more weather-
related disruption than others. Severe weather may result in some school closures even as the
UW remains open for regular business affecting a parent's ability to report to work.
Personal safety is an important consideration when evaluating the ability to commute to work
during severe weather.
If weather conditions prevent an employee from working as scheduled, leave taken due to
inclement weather is charged to vacation leave, personal holiday, accrued compensatory time, or
leave without pay according to the position's collective bargaining agreement or employment
program.
The following table summarizes leave use for classified and professional staff who miss work
because of inclement weather:
Vacation leave,
Accrued compensatory time
Supervisors can approve requests for employees to temporarily work from home, if doing so
allows completion of work assignments.

Employees and supervisors should review your unit’s plans for inclement weather and employee
leave use options.
See the UW Operational Status web page for information about how to check the UW's
operational status.
If you are unable to come to work, notify your supervisor according to your department’s
established procedures. When you return to work, complete your department’s leave request
form.
