Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and

Originally the Alta Peruvian Lodge was one of the medical barracks buildings located in Brigham City,
and was known as the Becknell Medical Hospital. The building was purchased by Lauren W. Gibbs under the
company name Bundoc Corp. sometime before 1945. The building was sectioned into 4 pieces, and then moved
from Brigham City up to Alta through the Little Cottonwood Canyon.
According to the tax file at the Salt Lake Archives on some 40D-30 serial cards the building had 2 ½
stories in 1945 with 57 rooms, 6 medium dormers, and a  roof type. 1951-1957 they either added rooms to the
attic dormitory, 1st and 2nd floors or they remodeled them. They installed Fire & Sprinkler system to the 2 nd floor.
1958 they had 3 stories, and changed the roof type from  to flat, they added porches to the front and rear of the
building, a boiler room was added, and 1 deluxe swimming pool measuring 26x44. 1960-1965 they build a
detached garage with a flat roof. In 1986 the owner changed to John D. Cahill (attached is 6 yellow pages of notes
taken from the 40D-30 cards, and some miscellaneous copies from their file on the Peruvian Lodge at the Salt
Lake Archives visited on February 11, 2020)

Architecture: The style of the building illustrates architecture from World War II as a medical war barracks from
that time period.
Entertainment/Recreation: The Alta Peruvian Lodge is a hotel up Little Cottonwood Canyon where people stay and
spend time skiing. The lodge has hosted ski events, weddings, and parties over the years.
Military: The lodge was originally the Becknell Medical Hospital on a military base in Brigham City.
Social History: Connected to the ski culture of Utah, which was built on an old mining town called Alta. The
mining town is no longer there.
The Alta Peruvian Lodge’s building was purchased by Lauren W. Gibbs under his company Bundoc Corp.
and moved from Brigham city in 4 sections oversaw by his son Edwin Gibbs. On the Salt Lake Assessors website
under parcel #30-05-154-013-0000 its year built is 1945, but with remodels and additions its effective year built is
1991-1996.
During it’s initial construction after it was relocated up Little Cottonwood Canyon there was some health
concerns pertaining to the sewage and water runoff though this issue was resolved, and construction continued.
In 1958 the buildings roof was changed from steepled roof into a flat roof due to heavy snow (verify way
exactly – I know there was a few avalanches, need to do more research here). In 1960 a detached garage was
built, and then in 1965 it was expanded.
The Alta Peruvian Lodge was purchased in 1970 by John D. Cahill, and it was then that the lodge
underwent renovations, and additions. The motel had a sundeck, and sunroom built off the back along with outside
stairs on the east and west sides of the building, fire alarm & sprinkler system, service garage additions, and
employees housing. (notes from tax file on yellow pages included).
The Alta Peruvian Lodge is currently owned by FAPL Limited Company.

from his mission in New Zealand, he and his brothers wanted a way to

his 88th year.
Bill always put his family first, but was also ingenious in combining
family/church/work and play. He pioneered the Ward Lake Powell trip,
combining Church service with one of his favorite playgrounds. On one
trip, claiming to be able to navigate by the stars, he set out with a group
of scouts at midnight to find a campsite. After failing to locate the
campers, he headed back to the marina at Bullfrog at 30 mph with his son
