DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT - I
Course Code CE 8395 – STRENGTH OF MATERIALS FOR Academic year: Year/ Sem /Sec:
& Name MECHANICAL ENGINEERS 2019 - 2020 II / IV / A
Blooms
PART – A (5 × 2 = 10 Marks) Cos Mark
level
1 State Hooke’s law. Re CO1 2
Estimate the load carried by a bar if the axial stress is 10 N/mm2
2 Un CO1 2
and the diameter of bar is 10 mm.
3 What is thermal stress? Re CO1 2
4 Define principle stresses and principal plane. Re CO1 2
Draw the shear force diagram for a cantilever beam of span 4m
5 Ap CO2 2
and carrying a point load of 50 kN at midspan.
PART – B (5 × 6 = 30 Marks)
A steel rod of 50 mm diameter is subjected to a force as shown in
figure. Find the elongation of the rod. Take E=2*105 N/mm2 .

6. Re CO1 5

A reinforced concrete column 500 mm x 500 mm in section is

reinforced with 4 steel bars of 25 mm diameter; one in each
7. corner, the column is carrying a load of 1000 kN. Find the stresses Ev CO1 5
in the concrete and steel bars.
Take Esteel = 210x103N/mm2 and ECon = 14x103N/mm2.
A steel rod of 3 cm diameter and 5m long is connected to two
grips and the rod is maintained at a temperature of 95◦C.
8. Determine the stress and pull exerted when the temperature falls Ev CO1 5
to 30◦C, if (i) The ends do not yield, and (ii) The ends yield by
0.12 cm. Take E = 2 x 106 MN/m2 and α = 12 x 10-6 /◦C.
A bar 30 mm in diameter was subjected to a tensile load of 54 kN
and measured extension on 300 mm gauge length was 0.112 mm and
9. Ev CO1 5
change in diameter was 0.00366 mm. Calculate Poisson’s ratio and
the values of three elastic modulii.
A steel plate 300 mm long. 60 mm wide and 30 mm deep is acted
upon by the forces shown in figure. Determine the change in
volume. Take E = 200 kN/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.

10. Ev CO1 5
Reg No:

A beam is freely supported over a span of 6m. It carries a UDL of

3kN/m over 1.5m from the left hand support and also from the centre
upto the right hand support. It has, besides, two point loads of 2 and
5kN at 1.5 and 4.5m from left hand support. Construct the SF and BM
diagrams.
11. Ap CO2 5

PART – C (1 × 10 = 10 Marks)
A cantilever beam of length 3mm carries the point load as shown in
figure. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the
cantilever beam.

12. Ap CO2 10

Course Outcome(s)
Understand the concepts of stress and strain in simple and compound bars,
CO 1
the importance of principal stresses and principal planes.
Understand the load transferring mechanism in beams and stress
CO 2
