Service Bulletin
1100 Series 15 Issue 1
How to fill the coolant system July 2004

This Service Bulletin applies to 1100 Series three and four cylinder engines only.
It is important to follow the recommendations shown below when the coolant system is to be filled:
Warning! Do not remove the filler cap while the engine is hot and the system is under pressure because
dangerous hot coolant can be discharged.
1 Remove the filler cap of the coolant system.

Cautions:
If the coolant is added faster than the recommended rate, air can be in the system and cause the engine
to overheat.
A change in coolant temperature may not show on the coolant temperature gauge if there is air in the
system.
2 Fill the engine coolant system with antifreeze mixture to the correct level, at a rate no faster than ten litres
a minute.

Notes:
In some applications it may not be possible to obtain ten litres a minute without air in the system, due to
the arrangement of the radiator, pipes and heaters.
The antifreeze mixture must contain an equal amount of antifreeze and water. A mixture of more than 50%
of antifreeze must not be used because these can affect the engine performance. For more information on
the coolant specification refer to relevant manuals.
3 Fit the filler cap of the cooling system.
4 Operate the engine at medium speed range for thirty seconds.
5 Stop the engine. When the engine has stopped any air in the coolant system will be eliminated automatically
through the thermostat jiggle pin.
6 Check the coolant level and, if necessary, fill again to the correct level.

Notes:
This procedure may have to be repeated more than once, to ensure all air is eliminated from the cooling
system.
Ensure the cooling system is free from air before the engine is operated at high load or speed.
