N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Kayla Sonderman Date of Activity: 4/13/2020 Faculty name: LaCroix

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):

I enrolled in the free course offered by Yale on happiness. I completed the content for Week 2:

Misconceptions About Happiness and Week 5: Stuff That Really Makes Us Happy. The purpose

is to give students a more realistic, evidence-based understanding of how to be happy by learning

what things actually make us happier and which do not. My role as a student was to go through

the content at my own pace and participate in questions/forums if desired.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

This course is entirely online. The two weeks of content that I completed took 2 ½ hours

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The value of this experience to me was that it really made me reevaluate my goals and why I was

trying to achieve them. It made me think about what I thought was going to make me happier

and if these goals really would bring me happiness based on research. I appreciated the time to

reflect on what I want out of life and what is and is not necessary to live my happiest life.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

I will continue to use this experience and the knowledge I gained to evaluate my motivations for

doing things throughout my career. Some examples are: if I want to go back to school is it

simply because I want a pay raise because a think a higher income will make me happier? Am I
working on my diet and exercise regimen for vanity or for health and wellbeing so that I can

perform better at work and at home? Am I looking to change to a position with more authority

because I think status will bring me happiness or because I think I will actually enjoy the work?

Taking a second to think about the motivation behind actions I believe will help me to make

decisions that increase my overall happiness long term.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future;

why or why not? (Describe)

I would recommend this experience. It is very well done and presented in a way that is

unpretentious and easily understood. The lessons are applicable to everyone, not just

nurses/nursing students

Brochure or proof of attendance obtained if applicable? Signature on

validation of clinical hours form obtained?

No certificate was provided (getting a certificate requires paying a $50 fee), but I do have an

email showing my registration for the course.
