Ruffled Roses Scarf

A bouquet of roses right under your chin every day - what could be more
romantic than that? The technique to create these ruffles is quite easy*, If you
haven’t tried lace yet, stretch yourself & amaze your friends!
Construction: The scarf is worked in 2 pieces from Fiber
the ends to the center, which is joined using a 3 Yarn A - ONLine, Linie 194 Solo
needle bindoff. The sample was worked by making (22 yds /20m 1.75 oz /50 gr) per skein
one half using colors A, B & C, the second half using Color: Dark & Light Red 04, 1 ball
colors A, B & D. Yarn B - Misti Baby Alpaca Worsted
(109 yds / 99m 1.75 oz/50 gr) per skein
Finished Meas: Approx 6.5” x 48” (If you want to Marigold Melange - 5573 - 1 ball
create the Ruffled Bunch of Rose at the base of the Yarn C - Misti Baby Alpaca Worsted
throat as pictured, scarf should wrap comfortably Chartreuse Melange - 7238, 1 ball
around the neck twice, plus about 5”.) Yarn D - Misti Baby Alpaca Worsted
Maize - 7300, 1 ball
Skill Level: K 2.5 Easy (with a little lace...)
Gauge: 4 sts = 1” in 2x2 rib on size: 7 US/4.5mm
Notions Darning needle
Stitches: YO, VDD, K2P2 Ribbing, 3-needle Bind Off

*To cast on simply insert the needle into the fabric at 1”

intervals along the edge. Make sts the same way.

Scarf Half
Cast on 24 sts by impaling the lighter edge of the
ribbon yarn at points 1” apart from each other.
Row 1: Insert your right needle into 2 of the cast on
sts, pull one new ribbon stitch (created in the same
manner, 1” from the last cast on stitch) through the 2
sts, working them together. Cast on 1 stitch by
impaling the edge of the ribbon yarn as in original cast
on section. You have just worked a (K2tog, M1) in
the ribbon yarn. Repeat this across all sts, ending with
24 sts - the same number you cast on.
Row 2 (WS): (P2tog in the same manner as you
K2tog, cast on 1 stitch) rep across all sts - 24 sts.
Rep last 2 rows twice more - 6 rows of ruffles total.
Cut A, leaving a 4” tail and tying a knot to prevent the
ribbon from unraveling.
Start Lace Section
Next row: Leaving a 10” tail, beg working with B, knit
into the front and back of each stitch - 48 sts.
Next row: Purl all sts.
Beg lace chart, work edge (grayed) sts at start and end
of row, rep sts 3-13 four times across center 44 sts,
placing a marker between each repeat.
Row 1: K2, place marker, (k1, YO, k3, VDD, k3, YO,
k1, place marker) 4 times, k2
Row 2 (and all WS rows): K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3: K2, (k2, YO, k2, VDD, k2, YO, k2) four
times, k2.
Row 5: K2, (k3, YO, k1, VDD, k1, YO, k3) four
times, k2
Row 7: K2, (k4, YO, VDD, YO, k4) 4 times, end k2
Row 9: Knit all sts.
Row 10: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Change to C and repeat last 10 rows 3 more times.
Start Ribbing Section
Next row (RS): K2, p1 (k2, p2)12 times, k2, p1, k2.

Next row (WS): K3 (p2, k2) rep to last 3 sts, k3.
Rep last 2 rows until work meas 24” from cast on
edge, or desired length. Do not bind off, slip sts to
holder.
For second scarf half, repeat above instructions,
substituting color D for color C and using the darker
edge of A when working the cast on and ruffle rows.
Finishing
Using a 3-needle bind off, join two halves of scarf at
center (you may also graft the halves together if you
wish.) Weave in ends, use the 10” end from the first
row of B to catch the loose end of A and secure it in
place. To wear the scarf, fold in half and bring both
the folded edge and the ruffled edge to the front of
your neck. Pull the ruffles through the loop created
at the mid point of the scarf and arrange artistically.
YO: Yarn over
Before inserting needle in next st, wrap yarn around
needle in same direction as last stitch worked.VDD -
Vertical Double Decrease:
Sl 2 sts as if to work k2 togR, k1, pass slipped sts
over knit st (decrease of 2 sts)
K2 togR (aka K2tog) - Knit 2 tog with a right slant.
Three Needle Bind Off (aka ‘binding off together’)
1. Place the two pieces on knitting needles so the
right sides of each piece are facing each other with the
needles parallel.
2. Insert a third needle one size larger through the
leading edge of the first stitch on each needle
(knitwise)
3. Knit these stitches together as one, leaving 1 stitch
on RH needle.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 and slip older stitch on LH
needle over newer stitch. Repeat until all sts are
bound off. Cut yarn, pull through last stitch.
