Research Log #2 - Solutionary Project 2020

Date: February 10, 2020
Name:  Mackenzie Masoe
Essential Question:
How does homelessness affect the confidence and wellbeing of people?
Three Points to Prove:
#1: Women have a harder time building confidence when being homeless.
#2: Elderly have a rough time getting back on their feet after homelessness.
#3: Children and Teens who are homeless experience less self-worth than those who are
not.
Point that this Source Proves:
#1: Women have a harder time building confidence when being homeless.

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

“‘Who are the women in the community who could use these skills the most?’ The answer was
domestic violence victims and women experiencing homelessness.”

“They have lost their confidence, and, in some cases, almost lost their lives. I found out 75% of
women in homeless shelters have a background of domestic violence.”

“Participants in both programs learn how to make eye contact, how to introduce themselves, and
how to develop a conversation with people they meet, among many other skills. The completion
rate for the Empowerment Program is 75% and the Leadership Program is 95%.”

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

This article goes into depth about the ways a California program is helping to build the
confidence of women who have gone through hard times and are willing to get the help they
need. They explain their reasoning and thought process throughout the building of this program.
The creators started in 2013 and now in 2020 they have produced many functioning and
confident women. The program is called “Leap to Success”. There are two different parts to the
program but both have come out rather successful.
The two different parts of the program are made for two different types of women. The
first part is the “Empowerment Program”. This program focusses on women who are in homeless
shelters and gives them purpose by training them by working on communication and public
speaking. This gets them ready for the work force and the job hunt. This is a six-week program.
The second part of the “Leadership Program”. This program focusses on women who are already
working, they help them by going deeper into the material already covered in the empowerment
program. This is a yearlong program which includes the first ten weeks of classroom learning,
then they are given a personal success coach and are scheduled to meet with them once a month
for nine months.
A huge common problem between homeless women is many of them have been abused,
in any type of way. But mostly physically, by someone close to them. This causes psychological
problems and making their confidence plummet to all-time lows. Abuse causes doubts in their
mind that they aren’t worth much and that its okay for others to treat them such a way. In reality,
this is not okay and never will be. By building their confidence this will encourage women to
leave abusive relationships and build trust in themselves that they will be okay without them.
