GENERAL
P16 HP is a manually operated hydraulic crimping machine for one-off production of hose assemblies e.g. in repair
shops. This hand-operated machine works even in places where electric current is not available. After removing the
battery of the crimping diameter dial, the machine is also suited for operation in conditions where electric appliances
cannot be used due to danger of explosion. Thanks to its lightness, the crimping machine suits especially well to
travelling mechanicians. P16 HP crimping machine comprises a base, a crimping head and a hand pump.
P16 AP is a crimping machine operated with compressed air for one-off production of hose assemblies. P16 AP crimping
machine comprises a base, a crimping head and a power unit.

Transport
The packed machine is transported on a pallet. Size of package
P16 HP: x = 51 cm, y = 41 cm, z = 31 cm,
P16 AP: x = 62 cm, y = 77 cm, z = 61 cm.

Storage
The manufacturer has protected the machine against corrosion
by using the Zerust method. The machine has been packed into
a bag made of Zerust film.
The protection is effective for months if the package is not
opened. After opening it, the protection of the wrapping film
ceases. If the machine is not yet brought into use, it must be
reprotected against corrosion. The machine is to be stored in
dry indoor conditions.

COMMISSIONING
Oil fill P16 HP
The crimper is delivered with the oil tank filled. It is recommendable to check the amount of oil anyway, because some oil
may have run out through the air breather during transportation. Fill the tank up to the line on the front end plate. Volume
of the tank is 0.8 liter.

WARNINGS
General
The machine is intended for professional use. It is to be operated only by a trained operator who has understood the
dangers involved in the operation.
Openings between the dies exceed 6 mm, thus being large enough to let fingers go between the dies and get crimped. It
is, therefore, ABSOLUTELY necessary to follow operating instructions and warnings indicated by the stickers on the
machine when changing dies and crimping fittings.

Danger zones P16 HP / P16 AP

OPERATION

Control identification P16 HP

1. Handle for carrying.

2. Shut-off valve must be closed during crimping. When the shut-off valve is opened, dies will be opening as
long as the valve stays open or until the dies have reached the maximum retraction.
3. Two-speed hand pump. Approaching takes place at higher speed and the crimping movement that needs
more pressure at lower speed.
4. Storage box for die sets.
5. Air breather/filling cap of the oil tank. During crimping the cap must be open to prevent excess pressure or
underpressure in tank, which would slow down the operation of the pump. When the machine is carried, the
cap must be closed to prevent oil from running out.
6. Indicator light goes on when the set crimping diameter has been reached or when the test button is
pressed.
7. Test button for checking the function of battery and indicator light.
8. Crimping diameter dial.
9. Die set.
10. Battery box.

Test run P16 HP

• Lay the machine on a horizontal surface and open the air breather.
• Close the shut-off valve on the right side of the pump by turning it clockwise.
• Set the crimping diameter dial at 0.0.
• Make sure that there are no foreign objects between the dies.
• Pump the handle of the pump until dies are completely closed and the indicator light goes on.
• Open the shut-off valve by turning it approx. one round turn counter-clockwise, and the dies will open.

5
Selecting the die set
Use only original Finn-Power die sets in Finn-Power crimping machines.
Refer to the fitting manufacturer's specifications for proper crimping diameter for the fitting.
Each die set has its own crimping range. Follow it to assure the roundest possible crimping result.
The minimum crimping diameter D is marked on each die set.
Example: with die set No 18212/10 the minimum crimping diameter is 10 mm.

D L Die set No Crimping range

10 55 18212/10 10...12 mm D-marking
12 55 18212/12 12...14 mm
14 55 18212/14 14...16 mm
16 55 18212/16 16...19 mm
19 55 18212/19 19...23 mm
23 55 18212/23 23...27 mm
27 65 18212/27 27...31 mm
31 65 18212/31 31...38 mm
Fittings with crimping diameter of 39...45 mm are
crimped using master dies without a die set.
18212ins.eps
In addition to the standard die sets, a wide range of special die sets is available on request.

Installing the die set

• Open the dies to maximum retraction.
• Prior to installing dies, clean the contact surfaces of
both the die set and master dies properly to avoid
damaging the surfaces.
• Put the die in by pushing the retaining pin into the
master die hole. Push it down to the bottom until
the string-supported ball locks the die in its proper
place.
• The number on each die must point to the same
direction.
• After installing all the dies, make sure they are
straight and properly seated in the master dies.
• To detach a die, turn the die round the retaining
pin, and the pin rises from the hole. It is possible to
use e.g. a screwdriver to detach a die.

Setting the crimping diameter

From the crimping diameter chart on the machine
you can see the die set numbers and the
corresponding crimping ranges. The upper
section of the chart shows the corresponding dial
position for each crimping diameter in the
columns.
Crimping diameters in the grey zone of the chart
are not recommended.
The crimping diameter dial has been calibrated at
the factory so that when the dial is set at 0.0, the
resulting diameter will be the minimum diameter
of the die set installed, ie with die set No 16-16
the crimping diameter will be 16 mm, No 16-19
gives a diameter of 19 mm etc. Each full turn
clockwise of the adjusting knob of the dial will add
1 mm to the crimping diameter. Each division on 003333.eps
the measuring scale corresponds to 1/10 mm.

6
EXAMPLE: The crimping diameter of the fitting shall be 24.6 mm. Select die set No 16-23 (min crimping
diameter 23 mm) according to the die chart. Turn the dial to position 1.6 (upper scale 1, lower 6). This setting
will give the crimping diameter of 24.6 mm (23 + 1.6 mm).
The machine has been calibrated at the factory with 80 bar pressure. This means that when you are crimping
a fitting requiring 80 bar pressure, the measuring scale of the crimping diameter dial provides an accuracy of
+/- 0.1 mm (possible elastic recovery of the fitting not regarded). When fittings requiring higher pressure are
crimped, the crimping diameter may become larger than the value on the scale due to machine deflections.
Then the crimping diameter has to be corrected by changing the scale value.

Crimping
WHEN CRIMPING A FITTING, HOLD THE HOSE FAR ENOUGH TO AVOID CRIMPING YOUR HAND !
• After installing the proper die set and
adjusting the crimping diameter, insert the
hose and fitting between the dies.
• P16 HP: Pump the hand pump until the
indicator light goes on.
• P16 AP: Drive the pump until the indicator
light goes on.
• Open the shut-off valve till the fitting
loosens.
• Close the shut-off valve before the dies are
completely open. This speeds up the
following crimp as the free motion becomes
shorter.
• Check the result and measure the diameter.
If necessary, correct the set value and crimp
again.
To enable faster crimping and reliable results in
the future, make a chart of the diverse
hose/fitting combinations and the
corresponding die sets and dial adjustment values.

See the separate instructions for the power unit.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
Greasing
To avoid premature deterioration, keep the master
dies of the crimping machine clean and lubricate
them at 5 to 10 hours intervals, depending on the
crimping force. In case of fittings requiring much
force, lubricate the dies more often. Sufficient
lubrication is important as it diminishes friction,
thus increasing the crimping force.
Open the dies prior to lubrication. Apply grease to
the conical surface with e.g. a small brush (see
figure).
Lubricate rather often with a small amount of
grease than seldom with a great amount of grease.

7
Oil change
P16 HP:
• Change the oil once a year, in dirty conditions even more often.
• Dies must be open when you empty or fill the oil tank.
• Fill the tank up to the line on the front end plate. Volume of the tank is 0.8 liter.
• Recommended oil: Enerpac P22 or Shell Tellus T32

P16 AP: See the separate instructions for the power unit.

Battery change
• The indicator light of the crimping diameter dial
works by a 9V battery. Change the battery when
it becomes too faint or goes out completely.
• Any durable battery of type PP3, the voltage of
which is 9V, is suitable.

Calibration of crimping diameter dial

The crimping diameter dial has been calibrated at the factory during test run.
If calibration for some reason, e.g. after replacing the dial has to be done, it is performed as follows:
• Close the master dies lightly.
• Set the dial at position -0.2.
• Turn the filling cap to position CLOSE.
• Tilt the crimping machine on its left side.
• Remove the bottom plate.
• Loosen the locking nut (1).
• Turn the adjusting cam (2) to the left till it comes off the micro switch. After that, turn the cam towards the
micro switch until the light goes on.
• Tighten the locking nut but be careful not to turn the cam.
• The calibration has been performed now. Perform a crimping cycle with the dial in position 0.0 and
measure the crimping diameter.
• Correct by turning the adjusting cam when required. If the crimping result is smaller than the set diameter,
move the cam to the right towards the micro switch. If the result is bigger than the set diameter, move the
cam to the left away from the micro switch.
• After the right diameter has been found, tighten the locking nut and fasten the bottom plate.
